As carbon is highly porous when activated, it has an increased number of binding sites, allowing it to absorb any harmful elements like bacteria that may be lurking in tap water. Some bottle's filters are even powerful enough to remove bacteria from normally undrinkable water sources such as streams, or in countries where the tap water isn't as safe to drink.
Chemical concentrations such as chlorine can also be removed or reduced, resulting in a purer, less chemical-like taste – great if you live in a hard water area.
Now that you know the basics of water filtration, let’s look at some of the main factors that you should consider when choosing a bottle to buy. Think about where and when you'll use your new bottle most to help you decide.
Perhaps the most important factor when it comes to choosing your new bottle is the size and how much water it can hold. If you’re going to be travelling around, you’ll want something portable that holds enough water to quench your thirst but won’t weigh you down in the process. Smaller bottles of around 500-650 ml are light enough to use as a travel bottle.
However, if you’re looking for something to keep at your desk then the capacity can be as large as you like! Some of the options on our list of recommendations include bottles with a capacity of 800 ml or even 1000 ml, so you'll only have to refill them a couple of times during the day.
If portability is high on your list of priorities, keep an eye out for collapsible plastic bottles which you can easily fit into your bag or pocket when you’ve finished drinking.
Although plastic is convenient, the general advice is to stick to BPA-free plastic so you are not exposed to the potentially harmful chemical Bisphenol-A. All of our recommendations are BPA-free, so there's no chance of anything nasty seeping into your water! If you’re looking to reduce your plastic use, though, you may want to opt for a different material.
On the downside, metal bottles tend to be more expensive than plastic ones. They’re also much heavier, so may weigh you down during physical activities like sports or hiking.
All of our recommendations provide a minimum of 50 litres’ worth of filtered water, which equates to roughly 250 cups. Many of our picks will last much longer – those with a usage limit of 150 litres will provide approximately 630 cups and those with a usage limit of 1000 litres will yield over 4000 cups!
So, whilst filter bottles with a higher usage limit may seem expensive at first, it’s worth bearing in mind that they’ll be very cost-effective over time.
Bottles with straws or fold-down sports-style caps are also perfect for little ones who only need to take small sips throughout the day.
The internal filter is the only thing that lets this bottle down – it is recommended that you replace each one after only 150 litres, which isn't too bad, but the filters themselves are difficult to get hold of and will have to be ordered online for a fair cost.
A water bottle with a filter is a purchase you (and your taste buds) won't regret, but just in case you want to cover all your bases, we've found three more water bottle articles that may come in handy. From bottles for the kids or running to eco-friendly steel, we won't blame you if you want to stock up on more than one!
