Mini zen gardens come in a variety of shapes and sizes. While most are rectangular, circular ones are also available, and the right choice is a matter of preference. A rectangular garden might better fit the surfaces in your home, but the smooth, rounded shape of a circular garden can be pleasing to the eye.
When it comes to size, the correct decision depends on where and how you plan to use your garden. The benefit of small mini zen gardens is how compact they are. They're perfect for small apartments or homes with limited space. They can even be perched on your desktop, helping you remain peaceful throughout the working day.
The benefit of a larger garden is that it provides plenty of space. That means lots of room for pretty ornaments, so you can create a garden that remains tranquil while bursting with life—just like an authentic Japanese garden. There's also more gravel. One of the best things about a mini zen garden is the meditative act of raking, and with additional space, you're bound to find the action more peaceful.
Choosing your favourite decorations and features is the most exciting part of purchasing a mini zen garden kit. Its decorations that transform a box of gravel into a garden, and its decorations that differentiate one kit from another. Zen garden decorations are virtually unlimited in their variety, but most fall under one of a few themes.
As you'd expect, nature is a common theme among zen garden decorations. Think pebbles, miniature bridges, and moss balls. Then there are those more explicitly tied to Japanese culture, such as tiny cherry blossom trees, Shinto gates and pagodas. If you want your garden to acknowledge its Japanese origins, these are the decorations to go for.
Spirituality is inherent in all zen gardens, but some lean more obviously to these roots. If you're hoping your zen garden will help nurture your spiritual side, look out for statues of the Buddha, zen symbols, and crystals. Some gardens even include miniature gongs and incense holders, making them fantastic meditation aids.

Miniature zen gardens don't need as much maintenance as full-sized Japanese gardens do, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't tend to them from time to time. Hōkime is the act of raking the gravel or sand in a Japanese Zen garden. It improves the aesthetic appearance of your garden, and it's also an act of meditation that Zen priests use to improve their concentration.
The ability to practice hōkime is one of the best things about having a mini zen garden, and that's why most kits come with a small wooden rake. If hōkime is your reason for buying a mini zen garden, you should seek out one that includes several rakes in different styles. The varied selection will keep things interesting and allow you to create truly beautiful patterns in your garden.

Sometimes it's not about unique features or furnishings but about finding a solidly built kit that contains everything, and this kit from family-run business Island Falls Home is precisely that. It contains moss, tiny cherry blossoms, a miniature pagoda and Shinto gate, and every tool you could need.
The tray is nice and deep to avoid spillages, and it also comes in a beautiful box complete with a full-colour guide that explains the significance of each object. There are cheaper kits available, but none of them contains as many decorations or is as lovingly made as this one.
Mini zen gardens offer miniature versions of traditional Japanese gardens, but that doesn't mean they always have to be small. Compact gardens are great for desks, but sometimes you want a large one that you can lose yourself in. This kit more than delivers on that front.
At 34 cm wide, it's pretty jumbo-sized as far as mini gardens go. That means tons of space for meditative raking and plenty of room for unique decorations - including a pagoda, moss, Shinto gate, and even a cute turtle! It's definitely not a desktop garden, but it'd make a fantastic addition to your home if you've got the space.
The shape of this zen garden immediately stands out. With most zen gardens being square, it's rather novel to come across a circular one, not to mention a circular one made from wood.
Its wooden construction gives this a zen garden a traditional feel, especially when combined with the antique style of the included statues. It doesn't have many decorations, but it comes at an impressively low price, which means plenty of spare change to spend customising it!
Some zen gardens differ in their construction; others set themselves apart with decorations and furnishings. This kit includes two moss balls, a miniature cherry blossom tree, and - most notably - an eclectic assortment of stones and crystals.
This includes a path made out of crushed crystal stones, two raw crystal stones and an amethyst cluster, whose purported healing properties include enhancing the immune system. We're also fans of the cute little fence, and even the box is pretty!
This garden contains a bunch of decorations, including some rather novel ones, such as two koi carp and a ceramic crame bird. However, the most unique has to be the bonsai tree. It's a considerable size and adds an authentic feel to this miniature zen garden.
The bonsai tree is artificial, though, which won't appeal to everyone. If you're after a truly natural feel, we recommend a kit that includes moss, otherwise, this is an attractive, nicely-sized garden that stands out from the crowd.
The zen garden has strong links with zen meditation, which Chinese Practitioners introduced to Japan in the 13th century. This miniature zen garden is especially appropriate as it features an incense holder, making it the perfect meditation aid.
It comes with a cute little hammer and bell - perfect for tolling at the beginning of your meditation practice - and of course, a statue of the Buddha himself. It's a pretty small miniature zen garden, but it's perfect for creating a relaxing space in your home.
It's not often that you find a zen garden with a unified colour scheme, but the creators of this one seem to have opted for yellow as the theme. It features two adorable little yellow trees and a series of pretty yellow stones.
It's a little bit tiny and relatively sparse in terms of its features, but that's not necessarily bad. In fact, we think its compact size and lack of clutter make it the ideal companion for creating a relaxing desktop space.
This zen garden is unique, not in its features but in its construction. Not only is it available in grey as well as black, but it also features an additional structure that resembles a Japanese torii gate, which further adds to the spiritual feel of this garden.
In addition to a torii gate, it also has a small working gong - it's essentially a miniature Japanese temple! It's also a decent size at just under 30 cm wide. The big drawback is that colours are randomly assigned - you won't know until it arrives whether your base is grey or black!
Sadly, unlike full-size Japanese gardens, zen gardens don't contain water features, but this bright blue gravel might be the next best thing. It provides fantastic contrast against the green moss, and the kit also includes an exciting array of decorations, including two blossom trees.
Zen gardens are primarily designed for relaxation, and though many will find this garden's bold blue less calming than traditional white gravel, we think it's a great choice if you want something a little different.
Perhaps you're not looking for a zen garden but rather something that embodies aspects of one. This candle holder is like a zen garden in miniature form, including statues, gravel, pebbles and, of course, a glass tealight holder.
It's small in size, meaning it's ideal if you have limited space. It's unlikely to suffice for someone looking for a decorative zen garden, but as far as candle holders go, it's elaborate and peaceful, and we love it!
