Now that you know just how marvellous these little moulds of wax are, let's get into the nitty-gritty of how to choose the best ones. In this section, we'll go through the key things to consider when shopping, including the best type of wax to look out for, and a few fragrance tips!
When it comes to creating a romantic atmosphere, aromatherapy can go along way in adding to the sultry setting. Think something along the lines of heady, musky fragrances like frankincense, rose, geranium or myrrh. These are excellent mood setters, and some scents are even thought to have aphrodisiac effects!
Finally, wax melts with sleep-inducing aromas can provide a soothing and relaxing experience. There are loads to choose from, but it's best to go for fragrances such as lavender, chamomile or clary sage to help you unwind.
Just like candles, wax melts can be made from a variety of different wax types. Melts are usually made with either paraffin or soy wax, but you can also find beeswax versions. Here's what you need to know about each.
A few years ago, paraffin was the main wax used in both candles and melts, as it's by far the cheapest option to produce. However, that is where the benefits end.
Paraffin wax is made from non-renewable crude oil that releases soot into the air and contains many harmful chemicals and toxins. All in all, paraffin wax isn't good for either you or the Earth, so shouldn't be used for prolonged periods of time.
The better option for wax melts (and candles, for that matter) is soy wax. The oil used for soy wax comes from soybeans, so it doesn't contain any additives or toxins.
It's 100% vegan and is entirely biodegradable, but it may not always be the most natural choice. Many soy wax melts and candles are created in a chemical environment, so they aren't always as eco-friendly as you might initially think.
If you really want to go all-natural, choose beeswax. These are often a little harder to find, but they do exist, and you can find various fragranced beeswax melts, as well as non-fragranced options that produce the lovely honey smell the bees naturally produce.
Unfortunately, creating beeswax is a much longer process, so these melts generally have a higher price tag.
With candles, burn time relates to the number of hours the candle takes to burn the wax away. But as no flame comes in contact with wax melts, it never completely melts away when placed on a burner. In this case, the burn time refers to the number of hours the wax will hold its scent.
When it comes to an assessing value for money when purchasing wax melts, you want to check the burn time. Any company that is proud of its product, should indicate the number of hours their melts will burn for on the packaging, and the longer the burn time, the more use you'll get from your melts!
Checking the number of melts per pack is another way of making sure you get a good deal. Most packs contain between 4 - 8 melts. However, it's worth reading reviews to see how strong the fragrance is.
One heavily fragranced melt could be too overpowering, in which case, you'd be better off halving it - making your pack last much longer. On the other hand, for weaker scents, you may need to pop in two at a time for your desired results.

The first thing that we noticed about Henwick Hall's wax melts is their eye-catching packaging. The melts are wrapped in tissue paper, encased within a beautiful presentation box, making for a gorgeous gift.
The melts themselves are handmade using natural soy wax and fragrance oils, and even though neroli and ylang ylang can often be overpowering, Henwick Hall have managed to produce a lovely subtle scent that lingers. With over 100 hours burn time, these melts are perfect for creating a soft fragrance to refresh any bathroom, bedroom or living room!
Beeswax melts are notoriously hard to find, but we've done it! These are a top choice if you want an au-natural wax melt. Paraffin wax can often cause irritations to those with sensitivities, which is why these melts from the Beeswax Candle Company make for an excellent alternative.
These handmade, hand-poured and beautifully crafted wax melts have been further scented with natural fragrances. So you get a choice of lavender, sweet orange or warm vanilla, all with an undercurrent of the subtle scent natural beeswax provides.
These wax melts from Black Swan Candles are among one of the best options if you're after a strong scent. They come in a choice of five fragrances, but we especially the classic fragrance Black Opium as it smells just like a luxury perfume with undertones of vanilla, black coffee and white florals.
The wax melts are handmade and hand-poured using the best eco-friendly soy wax, and come beautifully packaged in an attractive black box with ribbon tie. It's no wonder they have such good reviews, with many customers returning for more before their box has even run out!
In terms of value for money, Scentorini is definitely up there. This incredible deal includes 8 packs containing eight melts each! The variety of fragrances is excellent, from cosy scents like apple & cinnamon, to refreshing fragrances like mint & white jasmine.
The melts are created using natural soy wax, which is one of the most eco-friendly options. To top it all off, the melts come beautifully packaged in a nice box to store your scented goods in. You can't ask for much more than that.
We love it when we can support small businesses, and Bare Boutique create wax melts that are up there with the best. Their handmade wax melts are not only adorably moulded into little heart shapes, but they smell absolutely divine!
With a choice of 8 fragrances you can take your pick, but we've opted for one of their best-loved scents - baby powder. The melts release a strong aroma that floats through the home for hours. But best of all, they are vegan, made from soy and come in plastic-free packaging.
These wax melts from Lily-Flame come packaged in a beautiful tin, making for an excellent gift. The ideal choice if you like subtle floral fragrances, we particularly recommend their blush, parma violet and bluebell scents to evoke dreamy thoughts of wandering through fields in the warm summer months.
These might initially seem more expensive than some of our other picks, but the burn time for each melt is significantly longer, which saves you money in the long run!
We couldn't make a list of wax melts without mentioning Yankee Candle. With a wide variety of fragrances available, as both single and blends, you should definitely be able to find one that piques your interest!
We've gone for one of their best sellers on Amazon, Cinnamon. Blended with undertones of cloves, this is the perfect melt to warm up your home on a cosy evening. The melts are very affordable, and they last for up to 8 hours. The only issue is, they're made using paraffin wax, so they aren't the healthiest choice for either you or the environment.
The wax melts from Fosse Living come in 12 different scents for you to choose from, but our favourite is the classic fresh linen. Don't let these little hearts fool you, they are bursting full of fragrance to fill your entire house with a fresh, calming aroma.
Your 16 individual melts will arrive wrapped in eco-friendly plastic-free packaging. Just be aware, like the description suggests, these melts are very highly scented! So don't be tempted to pop in two at once, as the smell could be a little overwhelming and cause a headache.
Here is another selection box, this time from La Bellefée. It includes a variety of fruity and floral vegan wax melts, created with rich fragrance oils and packaged in a neat little box.
This is, however, another one that has mixed reviews. Some adore these fragrances, while other's note that the scent is simply not strong enough. So you might need to use a couple of cubes each time, depending on your preference.
This is an excellent choice if you're after variety of scents. Derduft have a total of 11 different selection boxes to choose from, all containing a mixture of fragrances to try out. At just under ten quid for four-packs, you get great value for money.
The melts themselves are made from 100% soy wax, which is excellent for you and the environment. Plus, they come beautifully packaged in a nice big box. However, there have been a few complaints that the fragrances aren't quite strong enough. So if you're after a highly-scented melt, this probably isn't the one for you.
Wax melts are essentially mini candles without the wick. They are scented pieces of wax, usually moulded into a cute shape, which is then placed in a dish on top of a warmer.
If you're into candles, you've probably thrown away a good portion of leftover wax. Likewise, candlemakers wanted to find a way to use up surplus fragranced wax, and that's exactly how wax melts came to be!
As the warmer heats the wax, the fragrance is released. Wax melts can be places either in an electrical warmer that contains a small bulb to create the heat, or a candle burner that uses a tea light.
After a long day, there's nothing more welcoming than a gorgeously fragranced home. Whether you're setting the mood, using aromatherapy to relax, or just need something to cover unpleasant smells. From incense to room sprays, we've found some more of the best aromas for sweet-smelling homes!
