Many people love them for their ability to be easily cut with a pair of scissors, so you can trim them to snugly fit your reusable cup or favourite tumbler. You’ll find them available in a variety of bright colours, great for parties or those who want a fun statement straw.
Glass also won’t erode like some materials from acidic drinks, and the mouthfeel is just like sipping from a cup. Plus, if you’re concerned about hygiene, you’ll appreciate that glass straws are completely transparent so you can assure yourself everything has been washed away.
Don’t forget that steel conducts heat, so they won’t be as suitable for hot drink lovers, and they can also become very cold when placed in iced drinks. As with glass straws, you could opt for a product with a silicone end to prevent lips feeling uncomfortable and tasting metallic.
Bamboo does need to be cleaned and dried immediately after use, otherwise it will absorb moisture that can lead to mould or bacteria. Some also find the taste a little woody. We’d recommend these for someone who uses straws infrequently, or mostly at home with the possibility of cleaning soon after drinking.
It’s worth being aware of the fact that the bend in curved straws makes them more prone to collecting debris from thick or milky drinks- so if you don’t want to go for a straight straw, make sure you clean them thoroughly.
In order to make sure you replace any plastic straws when out and about, you’ll probably want to keep your reusable straw to hand. Choosing straws with a carrying pouch or case included will mean you can keep it close by, as well as keeping it clean in your bag. When you’re finished using it, the case will also stop any remaining liquid leaking all over your things.
Some straws (usually steel or silicone) are designed to collapse into themselves or are housed inside a small keyring when not in use, so are even easier to transport and to remember to keep with you for any spontaneous cafe visits.
Firstly, check if your straws are dishwasher safe, and if so, you’ll probably need to place them in the cutlery compartment or top shelf. If they aren’t suitable, or if you don’t want to wait to use them again, you can simply clean them with the brush provided and some hot soapy water.
Wet your cleaning brush and add some washing up liquid, then pass it through the straw a few times until you’re satisfied any debris has been washed away. Then simply wash the outside, rinse off and dry as needed.
No one expects you to become some kind of eco-warrior overnight. But by making smalls changes in your daily habits, your contribution can become part of something much bigger! Take a look at some of the other sustainable products you could consider.
