If you’re looking for a cup for the long haul, go for durable glass, although be aware they are breakable if dropped. Make sure to choose a design with a heatproof sleeve, which will usually be made from silicone, to prevent burnt hands when transporting your precious brew. Glass cups can be recycled at their end of their lives too, making them an even better environmental choice.
They are a good budget option, and will usually be available in a selection of attractive colours and patterns, with lids and heatproof rings to match. If you like a specific type of coffee or want a selection of cups to suit your beverage mood, you will find that plastic cups are more likely to come in various volume sizes.
If you’re concerned about buying plastic, you could choose a cup that is either made from recycled materials, can be recycled when you no longer need it, or both!
Bamboo cups most similarly mimic coffee shop takeaway cups, so it is worth bearing in mind that alongside this they are not very long-lasting, and therefore would need to be replaced more often if you use your mug for a daily brew pilgrimage.
Environmentally minded companies are also creating cups made from other materials such as rice husks, which is another biodegradable and lightweight material. Some are even taking disposable paper cups and transforming them into reusable cups, which will further appeal to those looking to purchase sustainable products.
Next up and also less common are 6oz (177ml) cups, which are the best home for your long blacks, flat whites and macchiatos. And finally a slightly larger but more common 8oz (227ml) size will perfectly house both the 6oz coffees as well as standard medium coffee or latte.
These have slightly more room to suit changes in preference when on the morning coffee run, if you like a selection of medium sized drinks.
For those who like to sufficiently caffeinate, or perhaps those who like iced coffee or tea drinks, you could go for a larger size still, with volumes available around 450-500ml, or 14oz. Don’t forget to check in the description if the larger sized cup you choose lists itself as suitable for fitting into cup holders, if you travel by car and require your trusty coffee by your side to get you from A to B.
Typically this variety are heavier, and won’t be able to be brought into a coffee shop as they probably won’t fit under an espresso machine. But if you prefer tea or like to make your own hot drink for on the go, then these flask style travel cups will suit you wonderfully.
Unlike many standard reusable cups, vacuum or travel cups are often leakproof, so are ideal if you are taking your brew on an adventure with you, whether out in the countryside or on the commute. However they are neither biodegradable or typically able to be recycled.
Like most reusable containers, some cups can also be cleaned in the dishwasher, which will help to eliminate build-up of previous drinks and keep them tasting as delicious as possible. Again, the product will mention if this is possible and where in the dishwasher you should place the cup.
If you're looking for ways to avoid single-use plastics and find sustainable alternatives that won't contribute to the growing amount of waste being produced, then take a look at these articles for fantastic alternatives!
