If you’re lucky enough to have access to a wood-burning fireplace, then you can look forward to one of life’s most enjoyable pleasures: spending cosy nights around a glowing hearth. However, a decent fire will require a decent amount of wood and storage for that wood to live, making an indoor or outdoor log holder an essential.
A trusty firewood rack should be functional and, if living inside, aesthetically pleasing. There's a variety of options from round Nordic log baskets for kindling to black iron metal contemporary pieces, but while they all do a similar job, there are a few features that make some better suited to different situations. So, that’s what we’re going to explore with this guide and recommendations from Amazon and John Lewis.

If your logs live inside, you have a wide variety of styling options, from baskets to racks to some that look like modern art pieces. Although they tend to be smaller, some may have multiple shelves that allow you to stack more logs without taking up floor space. Plus, additional space is sometimes provided for kindling, which is handy.
If you’re looking for a rack to live outside, then the chances are you get through quite a lot of wood. For this reason, many of the outdoor holders come in a much larger size, albeit with similar construction. To keep your wood dry, look for products that already come with a cover, or you can opt to buy one separately should you wish.
Keep in mind that most indoor racks are capable of living outside, you’ll just need to find a cover or sheltered area to protect your wood. However, unless you have plenty of space indoors, most outdoor options won’t work the other way around.
Nothing beats an indoor log burner when creating a cosy space!
If you’ve ever seen a log holder before, chances are you know what we’re going to say here. When choosing a rack, the best materials are alloys like metal, steel and iron. They are solid and sturdy and can take plenty of weight.
However, you need to check whether the material has been weatherproofed if you’re planning on placing your holder outside. Otherwise, it could rust. However, it is easy to do this yourself with the use of a spray if the company hasn’t already done it.
There are other options, such as wood or plastic, but these are generally less sturdy and not capable of holding as much weight. While often cheaper to buy, this can be a bit of a problem if you like to load up a good deal of wood in one sitting instead of having to do it regularly.
We would always recommend a log holder with legs for both indoor and outdoor holders. The first reason is that this will increase the airflow around the wood, helping it dry and draw moisture out of the centre of the pile. This will then evaporate slowly.
Secondly, if you’ve placed the rack outside, having it raised will ensure that it avoids contact with the ground, meaning there’s less chance of rot. Finally, if the rack lives inside, having legs should enable you to hoover up around it that bit easier, so you won’t have to fuss over moving it every time you clean.
Fire pits are all the rage at the minute, and a great way to keep warm outside!

In the top position, we have this product from Art to Real. There are multiple things about the design that we like. Firstly, it's tall, which means you can pack plenty in without sacrificing too much floor space. Plus, it's separated into two shelves which makes things a little easier as you shouldn't have to worry too much about logs falling everywhere.
The frame is sturdy iron too, so it'll be solid and stay upright. Again, the body is powder-coated, so there's no chance of rust, and this means the holder can live either indoors or out, giving it some versatility. Finally, you get four handy tools thrown in, too, making maintaining the fire that little bit easier. A hot deal indeed!
Ivyline has been around since the mid-70s, all the time providing quality, creatively designed products for the home and garden. It could be this history that gives them the expertise in making such a well-thought-out piece of equipment, as they were far more common back then.
This circular design offers ample space to ensure you have plenty of wood at hand whenever you need it, and the kit also comes with a rather sweet smaller version for holding your kindling. To top it off, it has rubber feet to keep the goods off the floor while at the same time protecting the ground from becoming scratched.
Up next is an offering from Amagbeli, and it's the complete package! It's made with a strong steel frame, that comes with a lined, water- and UV-resistant Oxford cover to keep your stock dry.
The cover is a good 10 inches bigger than the rack itself, so you shouldn't have any problems when it comes to fitting it. Again, the frame has been powder-coated to ensure it doesn't rust. That said, it should only be the little legs that are exposed if you've managed to put the cover on correctly.
It has to be said that this is quite unlike any other log holder we've seen before. The design is more reminiscent of a small indoor vivarium, albeit without the glass around the outside. However, this uniqueness could be desirable if you're looking for your purchase to make a statement and provide you with wood storage.
In addition, there are two different sizes available, one smaller 32.5 x 16 x 29 cm and the one we have featured. Both designs are the same; it's more about how much wood you need or whether you'd prefer a separate one for kindling.
Raised a generous 17 cm or so off the floor, this outdoor rack has plenty of airflow to keep your stock well ventilated and dry for daily use. Not only that, but the thick tubular frame is ultra-strong and capable of stocking an abundant woodpile collection.
The frame is also powder-coated, ensuring that it won't rust if exposed to inclement weather. Which, let's be honest, is a possibility even during our summer. There is some assembly required, and no cover is provided, but if you're strictly looking for a holder and are willing to buy the other accessories, this is a solid option.
This stylish bit of kit from Volcann is made right here in the UK. The steel construction is hard-wearing with a tasteful smooth black finish, so it'll fit right into many homes thanks to the neutral colour. Moreover, although the design doesn't have legs, the inclusion of rubber feet should keep your flooring safe from scratches or scrapes.
The log holder comes fully assembled, so all you're left to do is add the wood. Plus, there's a small area below that's ideal for kindling. It's worth mentioning that although the design has handles, many find that it's a little too heavy to carry when full, so it may be worth leaving it by the fire and bringing the refill to it instead.
While this might not strictly be a log holder, it is an outdoor storage unit in which you can store logs. So, we're keeping it. With a 113 litre capacity, you'll probably have more than enough space to see you through a few winters, though don't quote us on that.
Due to the slits in the panels, your goods will remain well ventilated and dry too, and the plastic it's made from is weatherproof and fade-resistant. The downsides are that your logs won't be as easily accessible as with a metal rack, as well as the fact that it might not stay where you left it when supplies are running low!
Here we have a set of buckets that will keep the components of your fire-starting kit separate but all together at the same time. With a bucket each for kindling and logs, you won't have to spend your time digging around the bottom of the holder to find the smaller pieces of wood. Plus, there's a cute matchstick accompaniment too.
Each of the buckets is made from metal, ensuring durability and sturdiness. The aesthetics might be a bit like Marmite: some will love them, others not. Of course, this is a personal preference, but if you're trying to achieve a contemporary look in your living area, having furniture with its name on it might not be the best way to go.
Appropriately named a 'luxury' log holder, this offering from Ivyline combines both style and function. The design will keep you well-stocked, but it uses a unique leather strap design to do so. It has to be said, the contrast between the two materials adds some great character and charm to the piece.
The frame is made from iron, but although it has legs to keep the wood off the floor, the design means you will still have to move it to clean around it. If you're looking for something stylish, though, this might be worth it.
Finally, we have our largest recommendation, which comes in at a roomy 200 x 116 x 36 cm. So, there's plenty of space to store your logs as long as you can find somewhere to put it. Furthermore, six legs keep the wood protected from the ground, making it ideal for outdoor storage.
However, there are generally two problems that previous buyers point out. Firstly, the hardware provided by the company is less than exemplary, meaning you might need to change it up. Secondly, though weatherproof, the included tarpaulin is tight, so you'll want to make sure the wood isn't overhanging.
