A standard size for many indoor Christmas trees is 4-6 feet, meaning you would need 10-15 metres of length. Of course, this doesn’t need to be made up of just one set of Christmas tree lights, so if there is a set you like that falls short, consider doubling up or combining different designs for contrast and depth.
In our product reviews below, the length we refer to is the lit length – that is, the length of the Christmas tree lights that have lights on them. Many lights are advertised as being of a certain length but include the power cable in the calculation, so keep an eye out for this when shopping for Christmas tree lights.
A higher concentration of lights makes for a more brilliant display, but if subtlety is what you’re after, you might want to think about a lower bulb count for a more diffused, gentler radiance. The brilliance of your Christmas tree lights is also closely connected with the next thing we’re going to look at – colour!
The glow given off by coloured lights is warming and unmistakably Christmassy, and if combined with a range of effects, can mean that you can spend your yuletide enjoying ever-changing hues and tones.
Ice white light bulbs give off a crisper, blue-tinged white, perfect for creating a wintery feel. However, pure white and warm white are much more popular choices for Christmas tree lights due to their cosy golden glow, and the fact that they go well with both traditional and contemporary design schemes.
Christmas tree lights with a green wire will blend in seamlessly with a real tree or a natural-coloured artificial tree. There are also Christmas tree lights with a white or translucent wire to add to that wintry look, as well as those with a shimmery metallic wire to bring that extra dimension of sparkle.
The Christmas tree lights in our list include several with a standard range of effects selected from a button in the power cable, as well as ones controlled by a dedicated remote control, and even from your phone via a custom app. If you’re considering using more than one set of lights, why not think about getting one static set and one with a variety of effects for the best of both worlds?

Coming in at 44 metres in length, you won't be short of lights to cover your Christmas tree this year. Enough to cover a 6ft tree or even use as lighting across your walls for that extra festive feel. These lights use a finer cable so it won't look too unsightly if it trails on the floor.
They can be used indoors and outdoors so if you have fir trees in your garden, you can bathe those in a warm golden glow as well. They require mains power, so be prepared with an extension lead.
If chosen well, your Christmas tree lights should last for many years to come. All you need to do is remember where you put them and to set aside enough time to get them untangled!
