Lastly, artificial greenery is ideal if you just don’t have that knack for gardening. It takes a certain level of skill to make sure that different plants get the right amount of water and nutrition, and some plants are just incredibly hard to keep alive. Save yourself valuable time and money by investing in a long-lasting artificial alternative, which will be just as pleasing to the eye as the real thing.
Depending on the space you’d like to decorate, you may require a certain type of plant. Here, we will explain the best plants for both indoors and outdoors, and how to style them to make the most of your environment.
As houseplants such as aloe vera and succulents often look fake even when they are real, they are actually a good type of artificial plant to choose – no-one will be able to tell the difference! Succulents in particular come in a range of colours and shapes, so you’ll have no trouble finding one to suit your décor.
Real topiary plants can be difficult to maintain because they require frequent pruning and shaping, which can require a certain level of skill. One snip too many and you could end up ruining all your hard work! So if you want stylish garden sculptures without the stress of clipping away, artificial topiary plants are the best option.
Real flowers wilt very quickly and are seasonal, which means you can only find particular colours at certain times of year. Luckily, faux flowers last forever and are readily available, so you can have spring florals all year round!
However, not all plastic plants are made equal. Some can be too glossy or have fake rain droplets, which makes them look cheap and means they are instantly recognisable as artificial. They can also be quite rigid if made from a low quality plastic. You should therefore opt for a plant made from flexible plastic, as it will be softer and will look more authentic as a result.
In addition to being more expensive, fabrics are less durable than plastic. Silk is delicate, so it can be prone to fraying or may lose some of its colour if left in direct sunlight. This means it’s important to think about the placement of fabric plants and how you handle them, to avoid causing any damage.

Although artificial plants require hardly any maintenance in comparison to real plants, they may get a little dusty over time. In this case, you should occasionally clean them to ensure that they look their best. For plastic plants, a damp cloth followed by a piece of kitchen roll is the best way to remove dirt. For more delicate materials such as silk, use a paintbrush to gently clean the foliage.
