Contact lenses make life so much easier – but you need to care for them properly, with a well-chosen contact lens solution, to ensure that they stay clean and comfortable and that your eyes remain healthy. Nowadays, many all-in-one formulations moisturise, disinfect and store your lenses as well as remove protein build-up. These convenient products are usually suitable for hard, rigid gas permeable or soft lenses such as silicone hydrogels, although some can be used on any type.
We have compiled a helpful buying guide and ranked the ten best contact lens solutions available in the UK, ranging from big brands such as Bausch and Lomb and Opti-Free to own brands from trusted supermarkets and stores. All the contact lens solutions featured are available to order online from Amazon, Boots, Tesco and ASDA.
A recommendation service that carefully researches each product and consults with experts across many disciplines. We are constantly creating new content to provide the best shopping experience from choosing ‘cosmetics’ to ‘food and drink’, ‘home appliances’ to ‘kids and baby’ products, reaching users all across the United Kingdom.

For most people, the best contact lens solution will be a multipurpose 'all-in-one' type. You won't need separate solutions for rinsing, deep cleaning, sterilising, moisturising and storing, minimising hassle and bathroom clutter. Plus, grabbing the wrong bottle and ending up with cleaning solution all over a just-inserted contact lens is highly unpleasant and can be avoided entirely by using an all-in-one product.
However, if you have allergies and sensitivities, it may be worth trying a selection of individual-action lens products to see which cause you the least discomfort. Individual-action products will have fewer active ingredients, making it easier to work out which to avoid.
Give your eyes a break from contacts with these recommended reading glasses.
Eye infections can be long-lasting and devastating, which is why contact lenses require excellent care to ensure they are scrupulously clean and fit for purpose. Most need cleaning as soon as they are removed – a huge hassle if you just want to fall into bed. Instead, choose 'no evening rub needed' solutions. These can be placed straight into the storage pot to soak and only need a brief rub the next day before putting them in.
Ensure you follow the manufacturer's instructions for cleaning exactly to the letter, as each brand's contact lens solution works slightly differently. Some require 20 seconds of rubbing to clean the lenses before soaking, others ask for that plus copious rinsing, and as above, some don't need any manual cleaning at all before soaking.
To ensure good-quality rest, consider picking up an eye mask for sleeping.
Contact lenses need soaking for an extended period of time, at least once every 24 hours, to fully disinfect and clean them. If you only plan to remove your lenses overnight, then you'll easily achieve the 4 to 6-hour soaking requirement of most contact lens solutions. This time frame is needed not only to fight germs but also to dissolve protein build-up.
On the other hand, if you'd occasionally like to refresh your lenses after work but before a night out, then opt for those solutions promising a 4-hour turnaround to make this possible. Your eyes will certainly thank you for putting in a recently cleaned pair of contacts before a big night out!
Grab some eye drops for contact lenses to keep your eyes feeling fresher for longer.
This product from Bausch and Lomb uses a lubricant naturally found in your eyes, plus it is pH-balanced to match healthy tears. These measures can provide comfort and wearability, even for those with tired and strained eyes, for up to 20 hours.
If left to soak for at least 4 hours, then 99.9 % of germs are removed. A quick clean takes just 20 seconds of rubbing. Then, rinse for 5 seconds with more of the fluid before replacing. This solution is suitable for soft contact lenses, including silicone hydrogels.
Bausch and Lomb are well known for making a variety of contact lens solutions to clean and disinfect or re-wet or condition. However, this single bottle does it all and avoids confusion arising from having multiple bottles of slightly different products.
With a built-in protein remover and a 'no rub' cleaning system, this is a truly simple contact lens care option for those with rigid or hard lenses. The bottle is only 120 ml in size, so you will be re-buying often. For those after high convenience, however, it will be well worth it.
With dual disinfectants, Polyquad® and Aldox®, this solution gives extra peace of mind when deep cleaning your soft lenses each night. When used daily, no separate enzyme remover is needed. This versatile product not only disinfects and cleans but also reconditions, rinses and stores.
The cleaning instructions are comprehensive: with clean hands, thoroughly wet each lens with solution and rub for 20 seconds, then rinse each side of each lens for ten seconds under a steady stream of solution. Disinfect overnight or for at least 6 hours. So, while this solution is not as fast-acting as others, it is extremely effective.
ASDA's own-brand multipurpose contact lens solution is suitable for use with all types of contact lenses. The product disinfects, stores, cleanses, lubricates, rinses, moisturises and removes protein deposits from lenses.
This option is also very easy to use. Simply add lenses to the fresh solution in the case and leave for at least 4 hours. A larger (and even better value) bottle is available from ASDA if you find you are using this up within the use-by once opened date.
Another affordable own-brand option, Tesco's offering has a thinner consistency than some other contact lens solutions. The silky-smooth, easy-flowing liquid doesn't over-coat the lenses and doesn't leave them thick, slippery and hard to handle.
The all-in-one formula cleans the lenses (with 20 seconds of gentle rubbing) and disinfects (when soaked for at least 4 hours) in the pot, which is included. This product can be used on all types of lenses, making it a cost-effective and versatile choice.
This Vizulize product is another one that is suitable for use on all types of contacts – hard, soft and silicone hydrogel lenses. It is a multi-purpose solution, so it can be used to clean, rinse, disinfect, lubricate and store lenses.
The dual-action moisturiser within this contact lens solution is pH matched to natural tear fluid, which means the formula is gentle on the eyes and allows extended periods of comfortable contact lens wearing. If you're looking to stock up for less, this large bottle will last you two months.
This 'Total Solution' is a multi-purpose product designed to clean, disinfect, rinse and store rigid gas permeable and hard lenses. It is an own-brand offering from Boots that is less viscous than some big-brand bottles – reviewers appreciate the lack of gumminess when inserting lenses after using it.
This quantity is sold as one month's worth of solution, but it can be kept and used for up to 90 days after opening if you are a less frequent lens wearer. This product can be hard to get hold of in Boots' brick-and-mortar shops, so online ordering is your best bet.
You can use this all-in-one contact lens solution from Boots to clean, rinse, disinfect, lubricate and store your lenses, so no separate saline solution is needed. A larger bottle of this type is available, but make sure you'll use the entire bottle up before the 90 days-after-opening deadline passes.
It can be used to rub your lenses clean (this will take 20 seconds) and is suitable for all soft varieties. The product will also disinfect, simply requiring clean lenses to be soaked in fresh solution for four hours or more in the provided two-compartment case.
This mini version of Boots' all-in-one solution for soft and silicone hydrogel lenses is perfect for taking away in your hand luggage when flying or when packing space is generally limited. However, it is best kept for these occasions, as a much larger bottle is available for considerably better value.
Nonetheless, the 60 ml volume will easily last up to 10 days of use with soft lenses. Being a multi-purpose product, it lubricates, cleans and disinfects your lenses, taking 20 seconds to clean them and 4 hours plus to disinfect.
Specially formulated for rigid lenses, these two travel-sized bottles (with a volume of only 60 ml each) of multipurpose solution can do it all. The formula will clean, disinfect, condition, cushion, rinse, moisten and remove protein.
The 120 ml of product in the pack will be enough for a 2 to 4-week holiday, but as it is split into two separate bottles, the duo is carry-on approved. This is a niche product for those wishing to travel with their lenses, so the small-yet-pricey pack won't suit all.
Always wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water (and be sure to rinse the soap properly off your hands) before touching your lenses or your eyes. Then, follow the manufacturer’s instructions very carefully – cleaning and soaking or soaking then cleaning will be required. Make sure you check the timings on the packaging.
Treat your lenses carefully and use the contact lens solution as per the instructions to minimise infection risk. Once opened, use the formula up in the time stated (usually 3 months) and change to a new contact lens pot when you start a new bottle of solution. Don't accidentally contaminate the bottle spout.
