There's so much choice out there when it comes to planting flower seeds. The best thing to do first is to decide where you're going to plant them and see which types of plants work best in that environment.

Hardy annuals such as Nigellas are fast-growing flowers that love sunny spots in flowerbeds. Sow in early spring for the flowers to blossom in late spring and last in bloom for the summer. Unfortunately, they only last for one season but are perfect if you like to experiment with different colours, designs and styles each year.
If you've missed the spring sowing season, choose a biennial such as Sweet William to plant in a large container or flower bed. They are very similar to annuals in terms of sowing and maintenance, but they are planted in the summer, ready to flower the following spring. You will just need to be patient to see the fruits of your labour!
Growing perennials is ideal if you're looking for a long-term commitment, as you can sow them almost anytime. Perennials will survive outdoors year-round by dying back in the autumn with the roots re-sprouting in the spring and flowering again year after year. Choose a native British wildflower mix for shady areas to add unique colour to your garden that lasts through the winter months.
When shopping for flower seeds, you also want to think about the sowing methods, as many of them will be different. For example, annuals such as Aquilegia and Sweet Pea are sown directly into the ground by drilling holes at regular intervals and placing your seeds in. This makes them ideal for creating formality and structure in your garden.
By far the easiest to sow are wildflower mixes, as these can be sown by simply scattering them on well-raked, weed-free soil and adding water. Maintenance is just as easy, with regular watering until they are fully grown and then it's a matter of keeping them hydrated.
Other seeds require a bit more thought, time and commitment. Seeds such as Petunias need germinating indoors early in the year and nurtured until they are big and hardy enough to be planted outside. These are great for the green-fingered amongst us and those with a bit more space and time on their hands.
Keep your plants thriving and well-hydrated and with a new watering can, we have some great options.

This Bumper Flower Pack comes with 4 different collections. It's ideal for all gardeners, from novices to professionals, looking to add colour, shape and wildlife to their outdoor space. Beginners and children will enjoy the easy grow kit, whilst sweet pea enthusiasts will love the variety of sweet peas available.
With over 24 flower varieties neatly wrapped in individual packets, this is a great way to attract bees and start an eco-friendly garden. Your flower beds, window sills, and patios will be bursting with beautiful fragrances and colourful blooms all summer long!
Nigella's are beautiful quick-growing flowers that love the sun and look great as a border or in a large container. The semi-double flowers come in blue, pink and white pastel hues with unique dissected feather-like leaves that are perfect for creating an informal 'cottage garden' feel. Your flowers will be adorned with bumblebees in no time!
Also known as 'Love-in-the-Mist', Nigella seeds are sown in drills and grow to about 45 cm high. They are easy to maintain and are generally pest and disease-free. Either pick them to dry, put them in a vase or leave them to enjoy where they are.
With a bit of work at the beginning of the year, these seeds will bring you endless colourful flowers until late autumn - you just need to remember to remove the deadheads. Petunias love the sun but are very tolerant of all weather conditions, making them perfect for a British garden.
Brighten up your patio pots or window boxes with bold colours, unique shapes and wildlife with this excellent bag of mixed flower seeds. This balcony blend was designed for those with limited space and will provide you with vibrant, low-growing fragrant flowers all summer long.
Filled with wildflowers such as poppies, nectar-rich cosmos, and marigolds, your balcony will be abuzz with bees and butterflies in no time. They're easy to plant - all they need is water, plenty of sun, and regular deadheading to allow the later-blooming flowers space to grow.
Sweet peas are big in personality! Beautifully scented, these colourful blooms create a sense of playfulness as they climb and spread all over your walls and trellises. Sweet peas create an informal and lively atmosphere, whether they're in flowerbeds or patio pots, and are adored by bees. Sown in situ in springtime, these annuals love the sun and bloom until September.
Being a supplier of sweet peas to the royal household since the reign of Queen Victoria, Sutton's and these traditional English flower seeds have quite a reputation. Be sure to look after them well as they can be overpowered by bindweed and are susceptible to aphids, snails, slugs and viruses.
Growing to a height of 4 m, this 'Giant' sunflower will undoubtedly draw your eye skywards and is excellent for getting children interested in the garden. This beautiful yellow flower should be sown outdoors in April, in a sun-filled spot and moist soil in either a pot or at the back of a flowerbed.
Flowering from July onwards, this daisy-like flowerhead can be as wide as 40 cm. Try not to cut them as in the autumn, their heads provide seeds for wild birds. Just be aware that they are susceptible to mildew and are often attacked by slugs and snails.
The ever-popular Sweet William is ideal for adding to a cottage garden or if you have a partially shaded area that needs a pop of colour. The bush-like plant produces the most exquisite bi-coloured petals in shades of crimson, purple and pink with contrasting pale centres.
Being a biennial, you will need to be patient to see these adorable flowers, but they are great for bringing colour and scent to your borders and patio planters in early spring. Best of all, they are relatively low maintenance, are easy to sow and just need regular watering.
This colourful clump-forming perennial is ideal for filling in gaps in shady areas of your garden or left to run naturally in wooded/shrubby areas. The upward-facing flowers with their 10 cm longspurs are unusual in appearance but will certainly add colour and character to your space.
This variety will produce a large number of flowers from May to August - just be aware that Aquilegias readily re-seed, so they might start to overrun your flowerbeds! As a huge plus, with each seed packet purchased, Groseeds give 1 person in Africa life-saving water for 1 week.
This unique gift is a quick and easy way to create your wild garden flowers on a small area of lawn, patio or balcony whilst helping the bee population. Simply soak the vase-like packaging in water and drop/place it in the desired position.
These seed bombs include a mix of Corn Poppy, Cornflower, Forget-me-not, Corn Marigold, Oxeye Daisy and Red Campion seeds, perfect for attracting pollinators and adding a pop of colour to your garden. Unfortunately, they only last one summer season and are probably more suited to a container than the lawn.
