How to Choose a Candle Making Kit in the UK – Buying Guide

Seeing as it's not only a fun craft but one with beautiful results that last, it's easy to see why so many people would like to try making candles at home! In this buying guide, we'll show you how to choose the best wax according to your preference and other considerations so you get to make your dream candle.

1

Choose What Kind of Wax You'd Like to Make Your Candle From

If you have a special preference for the type of wax you're going to work with, you can simply choose a candle making kit that uses only that variety. In this section, we're going to introduce you to three different types of wax and see which one you might like.

Soy Wax Is 100% Biodegradable and Renewable

Soy Wax Is 100% Biodegradable and Renewable

Looking for an environmentally-friendly wax to make your candles? Then you'll be delighted to hear about soy wax! Made from soybeans, it is 100% biodegradable and renewable, making it more desirable than traditional paraffin wax which is derived from petroleum. Soy also burns longer and slower than paraffin, saving you money!

Unlike paraffin, soy wax doesn't contain any carcinogens or produce any toxins while burning, and since it produces little to no soot, the air in your home will generally be cleaner. It also has a lower melting point, which means it will be easier to work with when shaping your candle.

Not only is soy wax vegan-friendly and generally a better option for your family, but it is also one of the most common waxes used in candle making kits. So, if you're fond of this type of wax, you'll be able to find a suitable kit easily.

Sweet-Smelling Beeswax Is Good for Those With Asthma and Allergies

Sweet-Smelling Beeswax Is Good for Those With Asthma and Allergies

Just like soy, beeswax is less toxic than paraffin and even produce harmless negatives ions whilst it burns which neutralise the pollutants in the air. That's why people suffering from asthma and allergies will be able to enjoy burning candles if beeswax is used instead. It can even help to neutralise kitchen odours!

Beeswax also produces a bright white light that is very similar to natural sunlight, which helps to minimise eye strain and reduce headaches if candles are the main source of light in a rather dim room.

Naturally dripless, you won't have to worry about beeswax causing injuries from liquified hot wax, however, we'd still like to remind you to keep your candle away from children. Lastly, beeswax releases a subtle, sweet and relaxing honey scent when being burnt, and who doesn't like the smell of honey?

Coconut Wax Burns the Longest and Holds Up the Most Scents

Coconut Wax Burns the Longest and Holds Up the Most Scents

It's not the easiest to find coconut wax in a candle making kit, but we think you should give this other eco-friendly and sustainable wax a go as it has a few unique properties. And of course, it's vegan too!

Firstly, coconut wax is soot-free and it has the longest burning time of all the available waxes. And although it is derived from coconut, the wax itself is odourless, which will be great news for some. It can, however, hold a lot of scent within its wax (up to 12%), so if you do prefer a strong perfume, go ahead and add a good dose of high-quality essential oil to your coconut candles.

There's one thing to be aware of though – since coconut wax has a low burning point, it turns back to a liquid state at quite a low temperature. This means that while it's easy to work with while crafting the candles, they could turn to liquid on a hot summer's day!

Some Kits Come With Fragrance Oil for Scented Candles; If Not, You Can Always Add Your Own

Some Kits Come With Fragrance Oil for Scented Candles; If Not, You Can Always Add Your Own

Paraffin and soy have a fragrance load of 6-8%, meaning that for every 100 ml of wax, you can add a maximum of 6-8 ml of essential oil or fragrance oil. And don't forget that coconut wax has a fragrance load of 12%!

Beeswax doesn't hold fragrance too well compared to other waxes, but if you would like to try and experiment, you can always add some coconut oil to your beeswax mixture with your choice of fragrance oil to help it along.

3

Check Which Other Candle Making Ingredients Are Included

Check Which Other Candle Making Ingredients Are Included

While wax will definitely be included in your kit, it might be best to know what other ingredients it contains so you have a better idea of how many candles you can make. We've tried to include the weight of the wax whenever possible, so you'll know if you'll have extra wax left over for your next project.

Other than wax, the most crucial component is the wick, as you'll need it to burn your candle. Depending on the kit you go for, you'll find that some only come with a few wicks while others come with as many as 50!

Look for ingredients such as fragrance oil or coloured dye flakes in the kit if you would like to make aromatic scented candles, or if you fancy adding some colour to your designs.

4

Be Sure to Check if Candle Containers Are Included if You Want Them

Be Sure to Check if Candle Containers Are Included if You Want Them

Unless you're making candles out of a beeswax sheet, you'll need a container to allow your wax to set and burn in. Some kits come with several tins where you can yield quite a lot of candles in one go, but be aware that not all do.

That's why you might want to check how many containers are included in the kit, and whether you'll need to go out and buy your own. However, if you're regularly making candles, you might have a lot of candle holders or containers lying around the house which you can always reuse. This is better for the environment too!

5

Look for Extra Tools That Will Help Your Candle-Making Process

Look for Extra Tools That Will Help Your Candle-Making Process

Other than ingredients, check what tools are included in the kit to help your candle-making process as easy and hassle-free as possible. Tools such as a wick holder, a wick sticker or a wick centring tool help to position the wick while waiting for the wax to harden.

If it's going to be your first time making candles, you might want to consider kits containing a wax-melting pot, string spoon and even a thermometer, as this saves you time trying to find the bits you need for your craft separately.

Sometimes, kits even provide you with a mould to shape your candles and a safety sticker which allows you can warn your lucky recipients to handle their present with extra caution.

A Perfect Teenager's First Candle-Making Set

Is your teen looking for new craft projects to do at home? This kit could be the next one! They can achieve a sense of accomplishment by individually crafting the candles, whilst being safely challenged by using kitchenware to carefully melt the wax. The plastic mould comes in two different designs, a star and a cone, which make relatively big candles.

However, the kit only comes with two dye colours which might not bring as much excitement as a teen would like, and they would probably need to mix both to achieve a new colour. But if they decide this shall be their new hobby, this reusable mould set will be their new best mate!

Safe and non-toxic, this kit contains five coloured waxes and seven adorable moulds shaped like leaves, butterflies and more. It comes with a colourful guidebook including interesting science facts that perhaps will unlock your child's curiosity towards the subject.

Adults too could enjoy this kit, as long as you don't mind that it is primarily aimed at kids and probably less challenging than similar products. But whether you're an adult or a child, you'll both enjoy seeing the fun and colourful final products

A Professional Kit for More Advanced Candle Crafters

We know there are some advanced candle-makers out there and this kit is especially for them. The kit contains all the necessary ingredients of wax, candle wicks and a wick centring tool. And with more than 2 kilos of soy wax, you'll be able to make quite a few candles before you need to re-stock your wax!

Since this product only contains the minimum materials, you'll only be able to create your signature candle if you have the supplies at home such as colour dye, fragrance oil, and most importantly, candle pots or tins.

Easy-to-Follow Instructions for First Timers

Not sure how and where to start with candle-making? This kit has you covered. Besides a melting pot and stirring spoon, you'll even get a thermometer so you know when exactly to add the fragrance oil and pour the wax into the tins. Many customers have reported that the instructions are very easy to follow too.

Sadly, some customers also say that the wick is a bit thin which makes the flames burn weakly. This causes a problem where only the centre of the wax is melted and the wick gradually soaks up the wax, resulting in it failing to light.

Summary

Candle making is an activity where you can enjoy the process of crafting and slowly appreciate your final product while it burns. As long as you follow the instructions and safety measures, you should be crafting a candle that you'll feel proud of!
