How to Choose a Ring Light in the UK

Key Points to Consider
  1. Decide Whether Your Ring Light Is For Your Camera Or Smartphone
  2. Decide What Different Features Are Most Important To You
  3. Choose Between An Outdoor Or Indoor Ring Light
1

Decide Whether You’ll Be Using a Camera or a Smartphone With Your Ring Light

Decide Whether You’ll Be Using a Camera or a Smartphone With Your Ring Light

Establishing how you'll be using your ring light or 'selfie light' as it is sometimes referred to is the first key step to that perfect picture. Whichever method you use, ensuring that you find the ring light that meets all your needs will greatly reduce costs and safeguard against any potential accidents. We will go into more detail about each of these points in the following sections.

If your main goal is just to improve lighting during Zoom calls, you don't necessarily need a big ring light. Most smaller LED ring lights can produce more than enough light to make you look good during regular video calls, and they are also much easier to position to wherever you like. And if needed, you can use that same ring light with your smartphone too.

However, if you plan to do filming with a larger camera such as a DSLR, you should consider going with a ring light that is larger than the camera itself.

2

Consider Features Like Size, Bulb Type, Colour Control and an Adjustable Head

Consider Features Like Size, Bulb Type, Colour Control and an Adjustable Head

A Larger Ring Light Is Ideal for Video Production, Whereas a Smaller Light Is Great for Taking Headshots

There are a few size variations when it comes to ring lights ranging from 10 inches to upwards of 18 inches, as well as smaller, lightweight versions that will clip onto a smartphone which are usually around 6 inches. These measurements are referring to the outer diameter of the ring light.

Using the larger sized ring lights will produce a softer light distribution which is the best for video production, whereas a 12-inch ring light, for example, is great for taking headshots. The smaller ring lights made for smartphones will not have as much of a technical effect as the larger ring lights and are made more for portability over quality.

Although all sizes perform well in their own right, it will ultimately come down to your budget and personal preference of how much control you want over your lighting.

Jani Ahonen
Photographer and Filmmaker
Jani Ahonen

When choosing your first ring light, you do need to consider how you will be using it. If all you plan to do is use it with your iPhone with selfies, there is no need to go with a larger ring light. For anyone starting to experiment with ring lights, around 10 inches is a good size that isn't too big but isn't too small either.

Opt For LED Over Fluorescent Bulbs if You’re Working in a Small Space or Poorly Ventilated Area

Logistically, using LED is much more environmentally friendly but in the event that it breaks, the LED inside the ring light cannot be changed and must be completely replaced. Furthermore, Fluorescent lights have a tendency to be more fragile than LED, so if you're shooting outside you need to be careful not to knock the ring light as they will easily break and spill harmful chemicals.

Working in a small space or poorly ventilated areas means that rising temperatures can easily ruin a shoot. To circumvent this, LEDs are perfect for shooting in places that cannot be easily cooled. If your chosen location doesn't have these problems, opting for fluorescent will be perfectly fine.

In the case that colour rendering is something important to you, then opting for LED over fluorescent will definitely give you a higher quality colour rendering index (CRI) for vivid colours and natural skin tones. This is something we will go into more detail in the next section.

Anyone who isn't already a skilled photographer and understands the lighting principles should automatically go with a LED ring lights instead of fluorescent ring lights. These days, LED technology is already so advanced that a typical consumer cannot find anything to complain about them. Unless you are building a big photographic studio or film set, you will be better off with an LED ring light.

To Get the Best Lighting and Colour Control, Look For a CRI (Colour Rendering Index) Value of at Least 80 and Check if There’s a Dimming Function

As briefly mentioned in the previous section, knowing what you expect from the lighting quality of your ring light is crucial in choosing the right one for you. Looking for the colour rendering index or CRI value is a good indicator of how natural and accurate the output of light is. The CRI value works on a 0-100 scale, 0 being the lowest and 100 being the highest and most accurate replica of natural light.

Also, being able to adjust the lighting temperature of your ring light will give you great versatility over the subject you're working with. For example, if you're filming a make-up tutorial, using the white bulb will give you the next best lighting after natural daylight. While an orange filter will bring a healthier glow, much like the sun's golden hour.

Looking for a dimming function is handy to have because you can control the amount of light that you cast onto your subject without having to move the ring light closer or further away to adjust the brightness. It may also be good to consider whether you want to use a bluetooth or wireless remote with your ring light. These features will be useful if you're working in a relatively small area and don't have the space to move around.

Jani Ahonen
Photographer and Filmmaker
Jani Ahonen

When choosing your first ring light, ask yourself do you need to alter or adjust the light in any way while using it? Some ring lights might not have a dimming option or be limited to only a few brightness levels if any at all.

If you are thinking of potentially using gels or filters with your ring light, investigate whether that particular ring light has good support for them. Certain ring lights might have loads of easy to attach filters or colour gels, while some might have nothing.

Choose an Adjustable Head if You Want to Take Close-up Shots or Bounce Light off Surfaces

Excluding those that snap onto your smartphone, all ring lights offer some form of angle adjustability. Some will only move in a rigid up-down or left-right manner, while others will move on a ball joint for a complete 360° movement. As previously mentioned, that's why it is important to consider the purpose of your ring light to ensure that you purchase one that will allow you to light up the right areas.

Being able to adjust the head of your ring light gives you great versatility for when you don't necessarily want to shoot head-on. Having the ability to adjust the ring light also means you can have more control and experiment with different angles of light. For example, you can tilt the ring light downwards onto a surface to take close up shots of smaller items like jewellery, beauty products, or rotate it upwards to create extra lighting.

The easiest way to get the most out of your ring light is to purchase a light stand or tripod for it. These come as an extra expense but are easily worth the additional cost since they allow you to position the ring light any way you like

Remember to pay extra attention to the stand's dimensions since some of them can take up a lot of space, but as long as you have a good light stand, you don't need any adjustments options on the ring light itself.

A Mains-Powered Ring Light Is Perfect for Indoor Work, While One With a Power Adapter or Battery Can Be Used on the Go

A Mains-Powered Ring Light Is Perfect for Indoor Work, While One With a Power Adapter or Battery Can Be Used on the Go

Are you someone who will be using a camera or a smartphone as your source of shooting? You should establish if you'll be working in one place or moving between locations. Perhaps you want to use a ring light to enhance your selfie game, in which case you'll need something more handbag friendly which will easily clip onto your device.

One very important aspect to know when dealing with fluorescent bulbs is that they only work through the mains power supply, thus limiting the movement of the ring light. On the other hand, with LED ring lights you will have the choice of using a power adapter or battery, making them better and safer for outdoor use.

My recommendation to anyone is to avoid any lights that require to be attached to a power socket. Lights that need to be plugged into the wall consume more electricity and carry a risk of someone tripping over the power cable. Lights that have their own rechargeable batteries are really the ones I recommend going with.

Why Use a Ring Light and Who Needs the Extra Lighting?

Why Use a Ring Light and Who Needs the Extra Lighting?

A ring light is a circular source of light that fits around the lens of a camera or smartphone to produce an even distribution of light onto the subject of the shoot. By reducing shadows and the appearance of any skin imperfections like blemishes and wrinkles, image quality is immediately enhanced to give photos a professional look every time.

Ring lights are generally used to shoot a single subject, so as to have balanced lighting evenly distributed around the model or object of focus. This makes ring lights excellent for those who do macro or glamour photography. If you are someone looking to take portraits that look more enhanced and already 'photoshopped', then you should look into purchasing one.

In the same token, videographers, YouTubers, or anyone looking to step up their game and bring a more cinematic look to their work - for a fraction of the cost to hire out a studio session - should consider buying a ring light!

Ring lights create this soft and even lighting that adds a little bit of 'pop' to the image, and hence it's most commonly used by influencers who do beauty and make-up videos. But it is also a good investment for those who do video calls and need extra light to make you stand out.
