Candles can bring light and life into a room but there are so many different types that it might be confusing if you don’t know what to look for. Do you want a paraffin, soy, or rapeseed product? Which kind of wick is best? Read on to learn the answers to these questions!
Scents can really help to set the mood in your home and you'll want to choose a candle with an inviting fragrance. Of course, everyone has their own favourite type of scent - you might like lighter autumnal scents with fruity notes like orange or apple, or you may prefer something deeper and spicier like cinnamon or clove, which will help get you excited for winter.
You should also think about which room your candle will be placed in. An overpowering scent in the dining room may interfere with your dinner, or having a sweet, food-related scent in your bedroom could make you too hungry to sleep!
Regardless of whether you want something uplifting or cosy, it's important to consider the "scent throw" of the candle, which means how the scent fills a room. Essentially, this boils down to the size of the candle compared to the size of your room, so check the dimensions to make sure you buy one that's a suitable size.
No matter how strong the scent of your candle is, if it’s too small compared to the size of your room then you won't be able to fully appreciate the lovely fragrance!
Of course, size is an important factor when shopping for a candle - but just because a candle is bigger, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’ll last longer. You'll need to check the burn time too.
Like the scent, the burn time is affected by a variety of factors including the type of wax used, the wick material, and the quality of any additional ingredients. In the specification table below each product, we'll list the predicted burn time, so you have a rough idea of what to expect from your new candle.
Did you know that the burn time can also be affected by how you care for your candle? We've included a section at the end of this article which explains all about how to look after it, so be sure to read that later!
As we briefly mentioned before, the type of wax greatly affects your candle experience. There are pros and cons to each kind that we'll cover in this section. If you're not sure which one you prefer, many candles are made from a blend of ingredients which will give you the best of both worlds!
Paraffin wax is the most common and affordable type of wax on the market. It’s very easy to dye and it has a higher fragrance load, which means the scent is usually stronger than candles made from other kinds of wax. The scent will also be released a lot faster, due to how easily paraffin wax burns in comparison to soy or rapeseed.
The downside to paraffin is that it may not burn as evenly as some other waxes, which means it tends to produce more soot. As long as you’re in a well-ventilated room, though, this shouldn’t be too much of an issue!
Soy candles are increasing in popularity, thanks to the material being natural and renewable - this makes it much more sustainable than paraffin. As soy burns at a lower temperature, candles made from this material tend to last a lot longer, as well as providing a cleaner burn with less soot.
However, due to the density of the wax, many people consider soy candles to provide a weaker fragrance than other types. While it can take longer for soy candles to release their fragrance, if you have a smaller room then a soy candle should be totally fine!
Another superb sustainable choice is rapeseed, also known as canola wax. Just like soy, it's a natural and renewable source. Plus, as it can be locally sourced in the UK, it creates a much lower carbon footprint than paraffin! Best of all, rapeseed throws fragrance well and burns slowly, so you can enjoy your candle for longer.
Pure rapeseed wax candles aren’t as common as the other types of wax though, so they tend to cost more and aren't as widely available. However, rapeseed is often used in candles that are made from a wax blend, providing you all of the benefits without making you pay an extortionate price.
Wooden wicks make a delightful crackling sound that's just like firewood, providing you with a multi-sensory experience. They also burn hotter for longer, with a better melt pool, meaning they'll provide you with a consistently strong fragrance. If you’re looking for something more impressive than a regular candle, definitely consider a product with a wooden wick.
It should be noted, though, that there's bit of a learning curve with wooden wicks - they take more effort to light than cotton wicks as you need to tilt them at a certain angle. If you just want something that's easy to use, this type of wick may not be for you!
The final thing for you to consider is the type of container that your candle comes in. Scented ones are usually available in a glass jar or metal tin - but which material should you go for?
Glass jars are the more aesthetically pleasing option and can come in a variety of shapes and sizes, which means you can match them to your home interior. Plus, the main benefit of glass is that you can actually see your beautiful candle through the jar. After all, what’s the point of lighting a candle and not being able to enjoy watching the flickering flame?
You do have to be careful with this type of container though, as glass can be a bit of a safety hazard. If you let the candle burn to the end, it will cause the glass to overheat and then crack, leaving you with a dangerous mess to clean up.
Metal tins, on the other hand, are a lot sturdier and less likely to break. Metal is also a better heat conductor than glass, which means the candle will create a stronger scent throw as it burns. Plus, this type of container is generally cheaper than glass!
Metal does sadly have some drawbacks though. As it’s such a great material for conducting heat, the candle itself and the metal tin can easily become too hot to touch. Be careful when trying to move the lit candle, in case you burn yourself!

The Feu de Bois fragrance is a sophisticated blend of smoky firewood and warm Lapsang tea. The transparent glass jar is gorgeous too, as it allows you to watch the flame gently flickering - it's the ideal choice for a romantic evening in!
This candle has been carefully handmade by a small family business in London, using all-natural, vegan-friendly, and cruelty-free ingredients. Plus, each candle has a paper core cotton wick which provides a superior burn with a greater flame.
Octo candles are all hand-poured in small batches in London, using completely sustainable and renewable soy wax. They also contain no colourants or dyes, for a longer-lasting, cleaner burn.
The 100% pure essential oils in this Hygge candle will fill your room with the wonderfully warming scents of orange, ginger, and various spices. Not only does the packaging look super chic, but the fragrance is designed to evoke the cosy Hygge feeling that we all crave on a chilly autumn evening.
Here's another delightfully sweet scent that will brighten up your living room. This vegan-friendly, 100% soy wax candle has top notes of creamy vanilla bean and a base note of delicious sea salted caramel - yum!
Further selling points of this product are the unique gemstone on the top and the long-lasting wooden wick that crackles as it burns. We can't think of a better way to relax than lighting this candle and letting the quartz cleanse your space!
The stylish hourglass-shaped container has a wide mouth that will prevent the wax from tunnelling and fizzling out. Best of all, the patented wooden wick crackles just like firewood, making you feel like you're camping out on a cool autumn night.

This candle is 100% hand-poured, plus it uses locally sourced natural ingredients - this makes it great for both your home and the environment. Once you're finished with it, the glass container is also 100% recyclable!
Lily Flame is a brand that's known for its fun scents and colourful packaging, and this Halloween-themed product certainly meets that criteria! Celebrate the best day in autumn by lighting this cute candle, which features a sweet and spicy scent with a dollop of custard on top.
This candle is also the cheapest option on our list, which is always a bonus! However, as it's in a metal tin, you'll need to be careful when touching it. Still, it's the perfect pick to warm you up on a spooky October night.
Yankee Candle is one of the most popular candle companies around, thanks to its wide range of unique scents. With a base of apple cider topped with spices and brown sugar, this is a deliciously fragrant choice that's a step up from the usual pumpkin spice scent.
Unfortunately, Yankee Candle is known for using synthetic fragrances in its products, which can cause the brand's candles to smell a bit too sickly sweet - so this is something to be aware of before purchasing.
Another important aspect of candle care is preserving the wick. Once you've blown out your candle and have let it cool down, trim the wick to around 3mm high. Not only does this prevent any unsightly burnt bits from falling into the wax, but it ensures a cleaner and longer burn the next time you use your candle.
Finally, it's essential to know when to stop burning your candle. Once you can see that your candle is getting towards the end of its life, make sure you blow out the flame when there’s still around 10mm of wax left. Any less than this and you'll risk burning the bottom of the container and potentially causing some serious damage to the surface below!
Once autumn comes around, we all want to stay as warm and snuggly as possible. After lighting a lovely scented candle in your living room, why not settle down on the sofa with one of these comfy recommendations?
Whether you've opted for a rich, smoky fragrance that reminds you of bonfires or a sweet, dessert-inspired scent, we hope our article has helped make your candle-buying decision easier. Plus, with our handy care guide, you can easily get the most out of your new purchase! All that’s left to do now is to snuggle up and enjoy the autumn air.
