Colognes may be cheaper in general, but they do not last as long as other perfumes; think of them as the head-turning guest at the party who turns up, takes a twirl on the dancefloor, makes everyone laugh and leaves in a cloud of delicious perfume. A short, strong flash of fragrance rather than a long-lasting scent. You may also hear it referred to as an eau de cologne.
A cologne is suitable for daily use and for those who want to quickly 'freshen' up after the gym or in occasions that you are in a rush. Although colognes are stereotypically marketed as 'men's perfumes', there are a great choice of women's colognes as well.
Eau de toilettes contain closer to 10 % essential oils, so can last more like 4 hours on your person. It is a more concentrated than a cologne but slightly less than a perfume. This is a great choice for those days in the office, parties or other events where you just want to add a slight but lasting scent. You can keep the bottle in your bag and top up throughout the day.
If you are wanting to retain for an even longer period of time, then an Eau de Parfum is what you need. With around a 15 or 20% essential oil content, they'll smell rich for as long as 5 or 6 hours. These will be the most expensive of the three, but many see them as a more economical buy over time, plus you won't use as much for each application.
Notes fall into three different categories; top notes, heart notes and base notes. Top notes are the first scent you will notice from the fragrance as they are most commonly made from citrus, fruits and herbs. Heart notes, the core of the fragrance, are normally floral scents, and base notes, which remain on the skin for the longest, are ¥ made up of zesty and woody scents.
Do you want a deep, musky fragrance that is bold and striking or a fresh, fruity scent with lighter notes? It really depends on a few key details, alongside your personal preferences. On the whole, evening wear, especially during winter, suits a deeper musk for a more glamorous, festive scent; perhaps something like coffee, patchouli or amber.
Citrus notes are often associated with and are usually better suited to, the spring and summer months, or on holidays – for example, perfumes containing grapefruit or orange. Rose, peach, fruit blossoms and vanilla boost the mood and are also suited to the warmer months, and are popular everyday scents for many.
While the type of fragrance will give you a good idea of the scent's longevity, it can also be worthwhile to double-check the intensity of the perfume according to the website you're shopping on. Perfumes with an intensity described as 'strong' will contain higher percentages of essential oils, and usually involve richer fragrance notes that can be more noticeable like bark, chocolate and coffee.
If it is listed as 'moderate', it may have lower levels of essential oils and the central fragrance notes may be gentler scents like blossoms, flowers and spices. It will not knock the socks off passers-by but should still give you a noticeable aura of fragrance.
'Light' or 'soft' intensity perfumes tend to contain citrus and fruits and will be extra subtle. These are great if you don't necessarily want your scent to be overly noticeable but instead want to add a nice touch.

Our favourite perfume by far, this is a real cult classic that's worth every penny. Its heady and spicy scent hints at childhood memories of tuberoses, a flower that is known as a rich, sultry and seductive fragrance.
A great choice for anyone who thinks they're not a big perfume fan, this chic product is a head-turning fragrance you won't forget. The lighter notes keep things fresh, so although this eau de toilette is rich in aromas, it is light enough that you can easily wear it every day.
This glorious musky scent is a mesmerising bouquet of jasmine, orange blossom, amber and patchouli for a darkness beneath the fruity overtones. A stylish bottle and a sexy scent, it's ideal for a Valentine's (or any) gift, we think.
Think fresh, clean sheets, wide-open windows and an elegant jasmine-blossom breeze dancing in on the chilly air. With floral and woody notes, this is a moderate eau de parfum that's built to linger.
This irresistibly seductive scent is sweet, bold, warm and feminine. There are distinct notes of cocoa and vanilla at its base, which are then brightened with fruity peach blossom deliciousness on top.
This eau de parfum is a truly full-bodied fragrance, and just a couple of sprays will create a gorgeous garland of flowers and spices around you that'll last a whole night of dancefloor delights.
This fragrance didn't win its icon status without excellent credentials. It's pungent and it's punchy, but it's not headache-inducing at all, with a soft mellowness to the scent making it both classic and sexy.
Like a glamorous high-heeled high kick, this perfume evokes all the Christmassy feels. Perfect for a winter night at the theatre, seduce strangers as you pass with musky ylang ylang and bergamot.
This gorgeous scent is the ultimate light, mood-boosting spritz which will give you an elegant aura, reminding you of summer days, underpinned with a bitterness that stops it from being too basic.
This eau de parfum contains a decent percentage of essential oils, but as it's a light intensity perfume, be sure to keep it in your bag for a refreshing burst of summery loveliness as your day goes on. It's also excellent value for money.
The combination of rich, powerful coffee for a heart-thumping punch of flavour, mixed with sweet vanilla which brings sugary fresh notes of fun. This hugely popular perfume is indulgent and glamorous and lasts for hours.
For a big night out, direct a couple of sprays behind your ears so it will warm your mood and senses gently but powerfully. This addictive scent is sharp and lively with a complex, dramatic vibe, and it's available in larger volumes should you fall for it!
This delightful fragrance is light, mellow and delicious. The idea for this perfume came from the ancient Hanging Gardens, and the evocation of the image of ripe figs hanging down over lotus flower-filled ponds generates a strong, intoxicating reaction, a reaction that this cologne captures in a bottle.
Fruity fig notes and floral touches are given a citrus kick with neroli. The delicate balancing of scents that Jo Malone are known for is something you have to pay for, as shown by this cologne's higher price-point.
Another fruit-fuelled fragrance for our countdown, this eau de parfum is free from the sticky, juicy quality of cheaper perfumes. Instead, its citrusy notes are blended with those of crushed mint and spring blossoms to create a fresh, aquatic scent.
This subtle, ocean-like fragrance is clean and sophisticated, taking you right to a Mediterranean beach. Being so fresh, though, and only moderate in strength, it might require multiple reapplications throughout the day.
For an unassuming, low-key and delicate scent, try Vera Wang's pleasant and gentle eau de toilette. It is subtle enough not to overpower your friends and loved ones (or offend your sensitive nose), but it still lasts fairly well.
The scent of rose buds is light and pleasant, and evokes breezy days with clear skies and sunshine – perfect for daytime wear. One thing to note is that the combination of this with the vanilla might be a little too sweet-smelling for some.
This deliciously fruity cologne has a sweet and citrussy tang, with notes of grapefruit and bergamot. It's fresh and bright enough to awaken your senses and get you in the spirit of spring.
Being a softer scent means that it's recommended that you combine it with another scent in the Kayali range, but this will add substantially to the cost. To make sure the subtle fragrance remains throughout the day, you should keep it in your bag for top-ups!
Always spray your perfume from a distance of around 30 cm, as this helps you avoid dryness which could be caused by the alcohol content in many perfumes. The neck and collarbone are the classic spots to spray perfume, as this is a central focal point which will allow your scent to drift out to others as you move.
Scent is believed to last longer when sprayed behind the ears as your blood is warmer in these parts of the body, preserving the fragrance. You can also apply perfume to your hair (though again, be aware of the drying quality of its alcohol content) as well as the wrists, back of the neck, ankles and feet to give a more rounded boost of scent.
And on a final note, rubbing the wrists together after applying, which many of us believe we should do, can actually disrupt the scent's chemistry, so just spray and enjoy!
