If you’re not sure where to begin when it comes to choosing a body spray for women, you're in luck, because we’ve pulled together a helpful buying guide to help you work out which would be the best one for you.
There are many different scents used in body sprays – far more than we can list here! However, these can be broken down into different “profiles” to give you a better idea of what the overall fragrance is like. These profiles can be mixed to create a scent or with more depth or used on their own.
Perfect for the spring and summer months, fruity scents are bright and bursting with juicy berries, mouthwatering stone fruits and soft orchard fruits. They are light and fun and can add a blast of sunshine to even the dreariest of days.
Expect scents reminiscent of strawberries, raspberries, cherries, apples, pears, peach, mango, and pineapple.
Body sprays with a deeper, muskier scent can give you a bit of an edge and can give the illusion of a much more expensive fragrance. They are richer and fuller, and can form a beautiful base note when mixed with other scents for a stunning result.
If this sounds like your type of fragrance, look for scents such as white musk, patchouli, sandalwood, ginger and cinnamon.
Fresh and clean fragrances are, well, a breath of fresh air! They smell light and breezy like a walk on the beach on a summer's day. They are amazingly versatile so can be used for pretty much any occasion, and are a great pick-me-up if you’re feeling low.
Typical fresh scents include pine, lemon, lime, grapefruit, herbs, cedar and bergamot.
Floral scents are what usually springs to mind when you think of perfumes and scent sprays, and this is owing to their popularity and how widely they are used. Aside from more traditional scents like your gran’s Yardley’s Lavender, they can also be fantastically modern and vibrant so there’s sure to be one to suit you.
Look for fragrances such as peony, rose, lavender, jasmine and lily of the valley.
Body sprays rely on some sort of propellant in order to spray the liquid from the container to your body. This can be done in one of two ways, and which one you choose is a matter of personal preference.
Aerosols compress the liquid and gas propellant into a metal canister, and as they are sprayed the gas evaporates giving an even and continuous spray of the liquid. While they give a truer mist, they are one of the biggest contributors to the hole in the ozone layer so can be seen as harmful to the environment.
Pump sprays use a spring-action pump to suck up the liquid and dispense it out of the nozzle in a mist. They are the more environmentally-friendly option as they do not rely on compressing the liquid into a gas for it to be propelled, however, they don’t offer as uniform a mist as an aerosol would.
Body sprays and antiperspirants work differently and give different effects. Body sprays are purely for scent, whereas deodorants contain ingredients such as aluminium-based complexes in order to help reduce sweating and therefore reduce the risk of any odour.
Body sprays can be used alongside your normal deodorant, but some also contain ingredients to act as a deodorant as well as a fragrance spray. If this appeals to you, then make sure you lookout for a body spray that is also a deodorant.

This hair and body spray from Rituals combines the gentle fragrances of rice milk and cherry blossom for a wonderfully sweet and creamy fragrance. The cherry blossom fragrance is wonderfully relaxing, and the rice milk nourishes your skin and gives it a healthy glow. The formula is alcohol-free, too.
This body mist is unbelievably fresh and lasts a long time, and is perfect for wearing through spring and summer. The fact that it nourishes your skin and can also be used on your hair is a bonus, and it comes in a beautiful box and glass bottle making it a lovely gift. Our favourite by far!
A refreshing, light floral spray from quintessentially British brand Yardley, this fragrance blends citrus and rose top notes with refreshing tea. It combines a complex floral heart of rosebud, magnolia and violet with cassis, which is then enhanced with patchouli and musks.
Fans of traditional rose scents will totally love this beautifully fragrant body spray, although it has been given an update for modern tastes. It's priced really reasonably too, and the fact that it's also a deodorant spray gives it added value.
As the name suggests, So...? Ibiza Dreams is designed to transport you to hot days and island sunsets. Its fruity composition features red apple, raspberry and pear, which are then combined with violet, peony and orchid to remind you of the heat of the sun, the feel of the sand and the smell of the ocean breeze.
Another affordable pick, the large size of the bottle means you can reapply as much as you need to without constantly needing to restock. This sweet and fruity body mist smells wonderful and offers great value for money!
Our second offering from premium British brand Ted Baker, and there's every reason for the popularity of these affordable scents. Floral Bliss Body Spray mixes juicy notes of green apple and the delicate floral tones of water lily with a touch of sandalwood for a fresh and crisp finish.
This is a really delicious fragrance and is ideal for everyday wear both day and night. Floral Bliss is available in other Ted Baker body products too, which would make a fantastic gift, or as a treat for yourself once you become a fan of the range!
So...? is sure to transport most of us back to our teenage years with its fun and affordable scents. But they're not to be sniffed at, as this elegant musky mist is sure to surprise with its notes of bergamot and sandalwood finishing in a powdery musk.
Some may struggle to get past the more budget brand image of So...?, but if you're up for trying it (and you should be!) then this offers fantastic value for money and is a surprisingly sophisticated scent. This would be a great spray to throw in your bag when you don't want to bring a pricier perfume out with you.
Transport yourself to long sunny days at the beach with this spray from Momento. Sensual mandarin and jasmine have been blended with woody, contrasting sandalwood and creamy vanilla for a fresh, summery scent that finds itself in the floriental fragrance family.
Lovers of complex scents may be disappointed with this, as while it is fresh, it is maybe more of a basic scent that's meant to be light and easy to wear. But if that's what you're looking for then this spray is hard to beat and is sure to leave you feeling refreshed and fantastic.
A great mix of fruity and floral, this body spray by Pure&Co mixes orange, plum and blousy peony with touches of cherry blossom. There is also sweet apricot at its heart, which then contrasts with the base notes of spicy cedarwood to create a balanced and not overly sugary fragrance.
That said, it does still have quite a sweet finish with the smell of the plum coming through quite strongly, so it may appeal more to someone younger. But if sweet scents do suit your taste, it does have some good counterbalance from the cedarwood, and again, the fact that it's natural-based, vegan and cruelty-free is a great selling point.
This Peony Spritz Body Spray from British brand Ted Baker offers a spicy take on a classic floral scent by blending bright peony with pink pepper and a splash of earthy cedarwood. This would make a great gift with its classy bottle.
Despite the maker saying that the scent is long-lasting, this does need to be reapplied to maintain the smell. But we totally love this fragrance which is a more modern take on the traditional peony, and it is a great size for popping in your bag to use on the go.
Are you looking for a fresh and cool scent? This mist from #Mood is simple with ingredients such as sweet melon and honeyed tuberose, married with calming vanilla and gentle sandalwood for a crisp, clean fragrance.
Again, this body spray isn't too overwhelming, so you may need to reapply it throughout the day to maintain it. Aside from this, this is a really unusual and refreshing scent, and we really love the addition of the sandalwood to give it depth as well as freshness.
Coming from the 'floriental' fragrance family, this spray is a wonderful blend of deeper earthy notes, bright and sunny bergamot and romantic vanilla and jasmine. It's a delicate and graceful fragrance that still retains a kick of freshness – perfect for summery afternoons.
This mist is great for a quick freshen up and we really like that it is vegan, cruelty-free and made with 99.5% natural ingredients. It does have quite a subtle scent, which will appeal to some, but perhaps not others on the hunt for an intense hit. Plus, jasmine does have a tendency to divide opinion!
When confronted with body sprays, mists and perfumes, it can seem overwhelming to work out which one would be best for you, but the difference is actually much simpler than you would expect!
Body sprays (or body mists) are made mainly of water or alcohol mixed with a small amount of fragrance to give a much lighter and more subtle scent than a perfume would. Perfume, on the other hand, is made up of a higher concentration of fragrance oils mixed with water or alcohol so it is more intense.
The scent of body sprays doesn’t last as long as perfumes owing to the lower concentration of fragrance. However, the upside is that they are very cost-effective, so they are a great buy whether you're watching the pennies or you simply don’t want anything too overpowering.
