There are three main types of fragrance - Cologne, Eau de Toilette and Eau de Parfum - with each name referring to the percentage of essential oils present within the bottle. More essential oil means a higher strength scent, and a longer lasting fragrance.
- Eau de Parfum - EDP has the highest percentage of essential oils, making up to 20% of the overall fragrance. This results in an intense fragrance that should last for most of the day. Eau de Parfum typically lasts up to 8 hours or more, which is perfect for those living a busy lifestyle who don't want to worry about topping up. That said, Eau de Parfum will generally be more expensive.
- Eau de Toilette - This is made up of no more than 10 % essential oils, which means that these fragrances won't smell quite as intense or last as long. However, you can still expect a fairly decent longevity, between 4 and 6 hours. Eau de Toilette works well for those who enjoy using a lighter fragrance that can be refreshed throughout the day.
