Le Labo was founded in 2006 in Nolita, New York City, and is a relative newcomer to the fragrance industry. Their perfumes are 100% vegan, cruelty-free and hand crafted using an expert blend of ingredients and essential oils sourced from all over the globe.
However, while they are newcomers, their rise in popularity is no surprise, as their options for personalisation and refills make Le Labo clearly stand out against their competitors. Perhaps best of all, each of their unisex fragrances is oil-based, meaning that one spritz has the potential to last all day.
Unlike other brands, Le Labo's fragrances are only available as either an Eau de Toilette or a perfume oil. Both have their benefits depending on how you prefer to wear your scent, but for those unsure where to start, here's what you need to know!
Diptique are another luxury brand that offers exquisite unisex perfumes!

Have you heard of a liquid balm? Le Labo also offers each signature fragrance in a 9 ml glass vial with a rollerball applicator. A great choice for travel, it'll easily clear airport security, and it's the perfect size to fit practically any pocket or bag.
As with perfume oil, the safflower-based scents can be applied directly to the skin. We think they're the ideal choice for topping up during the day or for those who like to match their scent to the occasion.
Solid perfumes are another excellent travel-safe option.

Santal 33 is one of, if not the most popular Le Labo fragrance. Designed to evoke the romance of the old west, the scent profile is woody and musky with notes of leather and spice.
It's a surprisingly complex perfume, which may be why it's so well-loved. Beneath the top notes of cedar and sandalwood are violet, iris, and a hint of cardamon. This prevents the overall impact from being too overpowering, with a subtle grassiness and lingering sensuality.
Patchouli oil is derived from a medicinal herb that’s part of the same family as mint. Thought to be a natural insect repellant, it has a distinct earthy and grounding aroma that was particularly favoured by backpackers on the 'Hippie Trail' during the 1960s and 70s.
If you're after a heady and sensual fragrance suitable for day or night wear, Patchouli 24 is sure to become your go-to scent. Dab a couple of drops of the perfume oil directly onto your skin to radiate an aura of free love wherever you go.
If your main concern is finding a perfume that lasts, we recommend Thé Noir 29. The woody fragrance has an above-average longevity, with the perfume oil boasting an alleged sillage of up to 14 hours.
Standout notes of this particular blend include cedarwood, bergamot and vetiver. Far from your typical masculine scent, however, the addition of fig and a lingering undercurrent of bay leaf results in a rich and aromatic perfume that's undoubtedly unique.
Lys 41 is an elegant white floral perfume with a degree of complexity that feels refreshingly mature compared to the more girlish scents that typically share a similar scent profile. Jasmine, lily and tuberose, with Madagascan vanilla and a light musk, result in a feminine fragrance akin to a light summer's breeze.
The longevity isn't as impressive as Le Labo's woodier or herbal perfumes. However, this isn't necessarily a downside. Lys 41 dries up nicely, making it suitable for layering or those who dislike overpowering scents.
Woody, spicy and lightly balsamic, Oud 27 is a warm and inviting fragrance. It smells particularly luxurious due to the addition of agarwood - one of the most valuable perfume ingredients revered by many cultures throughout history that dates back to 1,400 BCE.
Oud 27 is a great option if you're looking for a subtle perfume oil. Like Patchouli 24, this scent will linger on your skin like the smell of incense that hangs in a room long after it has burned out.
Baie is one of Le Labo's more conceptual perfumes that, to quote the brand, "smells like nothing". It could best be described as having a wet aroma, closer to fresh rainfall, rather than the popular marine scents of the 1980s, such as Davidoff's Cool Water.
The hard-to-define nature of this perfume is reflected in its idiosyncratic list of ingredients. Earthy patchouli is blended with aromatic juniper berries and ozonic notes to create an atmospheric fragrance that some have likened to mint.
Another 13 is an exclusive Le Labo perfume commissioned by AnOther Magazine. Described as a 'hypnotizing scent,' it blends 12 ingredients, including jasmine, moss, and mid notes of ambrox - a synthetic musk.
Some may crave the animalistic appeal of musk-based perfumes, but for others, it can be downright beastly! Whilst the primary benefit of ambroxan is that no animals are harmed in its production, some find it has a chemical smell that can be a bit overpowering.
Neroli 36 is a floral fragrance bolstered by notes of musk and citrus. Best applied to sun-kissed skin, the mandarin orange provides a slight zing without taking away from the overall sweetness of this summertime scent.
The base of rose and jasmine results in a light and effervescent perfume that's unlikely to offend. However, the lack of impact is to its detriment, perhaps playing it a bit too safe compared to the more experimental fragrances Le Labo has become known for.
Labdanum is a sticky, brown resin collected from the Cistus ladanifer, a flowering plant otherwise known as Rockrose. It's used to replicate ambergris and provides a leathery, tobacco-like scent with a hint of sweetness.
Le Labo's perfume by the same name offers a light musk that's heavy on the amber and softened by notes of vanilla. Although it should be noted that despite claims this fragrance doesn't "conform to any of the laws of perfumery", it has a noticeably similar scent profile to Guerlain's Shalimar once dried down.
Thé Matcha 26 is perhaps one of Le Labo's most experimental fragrances. It's surprisingly subtle, with no individual note standing out. Instead, it's blended to evoke the feeling of stillness, with an intimate scent only perceptible to those within close proximity to the wearer.
As a conceptual fragrance, it succeeds at replicating the essence of drinking traditionally prepared matcha. You'll notice a creaminess from the addition of fig, with the sharp aftertaste of bitter orange. That said, it may be too bland for some, lacking the pizazz of some of the other perfumes on this list.
