While little ice cubes are quicker to melt, you can usually make many more small ones in a single filling, so a tray with multiple smaller moulds tends to work best if you’re hosting bigger gatherings, or purposefully add ice to dilute white wine, for example.
Smaller ice cube trays – including novelty-shaped ones – tend to have fewer spaces, but a tray with just 4 large cubes can work fine if you live with a partner, housemates or your family and need ice for just one or two people. These types of trays also fit better into a packed freezer so are ideal if you need to be economic with space.
Price-wise these types of ice tray tend to fall into the more expensive bracket, but as they are so long-lasting it’s probably worth the investment. One considerable drawback of silicone trays is that some people feel they can impede the taste of the ice itself, though that really comes down to your personal research!
The main downside is the plastic has a tendency to crack when it reaches very cold temperatures in your freezer. This means it won’t last as long and while you’ll save money now, you’ll probably end up spending more on replacements in the long run.
The most expensive ice cube tray option is a metal tray, but the benefits may make this costly investment worth your while. If you’re worried about the industrial chemical BPA (bisphenol A) and other toxins contained in plastic, a tray made from stainless steel or other metals is a good bet as no such nasties are used in its production.
The second key benefit of a metal tray is that it won’t peel or crack in the freezer. A downside is that ice cubes won’t pop out of the ice tray quite as smoothly as from say, a silicone one.
Simply click the lid into place when your ice moulds are full, then leave to freeze and remove when you’re ready to pour the drinks. On average, ice cube trays with their own lid are a touch more pricey than ones without, but it’s a negligible amount, especially in terms of practicality value.
Speciality ice trays sometimes have fewer spaces than standard ones, which is the only real disadvantage if you’re hosting a big party.
