Finding the perfect video game to dedicate the next few weeks of your life to can be a tedious task with a surplus of games up for grabs and multiple factors creating roadblocks along the way. Join us now for our buying guide where we break down some of these obstacles to make sure you find the perfect pick!
You don’t have to be a veteran gamer to figure out which genres excite you and which you find too much of a challenge. You won’t struggle to find yourself a female protagonist leading the line in a vast array of games including aspects of puzzle-solving, intense battling and hair-raising horrors. Here's our breakdown of each.
If you’re a fan of slaughtering endless hordes of mindless enemies, action games will keep your adrenaline high as you work your way through mind-blowing action sequences and incredible battles to gain victory. Adventures games offer you the chance to follow the story by exploring large maps and using lateral thinking to solve challenging puzzles and riddles.
Many incorporate both action and adventure elements to create epics that are made for the masses. These grasp the finer details of the two genres to create some head-scratching, all-guns-blazing adventures for you and your leading woman.
For all the hardcore horror heads out there, you’re in luck, as there’s a list of female-led scary thrillers to keep you on the edge of your seat. Some of these games will have you sneaking around dank corridors, surviving hordes of zombies, fleeing from the grasps of monsters and demons and battling mental health and psychosis.
Horror games put your heart to the test through a narrative-based tale that includes aspects from other gaming genres. These game types are much more linear and follow the story closely, all while having a focal point on the visuals to scary you senseless and keep you on the edge.
What makes open-world games so attractive is the sense of freedom you receive when first entering your chosen realm. Although you are typically given the main quest to follow, you gain a freeing edge of exploration where you can spend time chatting to NPC’s, completing side quests, finding collectables, picking up resources and battling foes.
While drawing from other genres, open-world games do everything on a bigger scale; you feel like you are living and breathing the lands around you with detailed landmarks and locations. These are perfect choices for those who don’t want to be tied down to linear events.
It is safe to say that video games – whether with a female lead or not – are not always appropriate for all audiences with killing, terrifying scares and explicit language being just a few of the adult themes featured across releases. Fortunately, games are well regulated with a PEGI rating which refers to the age at which an individual can legally purchase or rent a game.
Many games fronted by women are action-adventure games featuring themes of violence and are recommended for 16 years plus. That isn’t to say there aren’t ample choices available for younger audiences, however, with indie games and big-budget hits on the market for all ages.
Finishing a game can be a euphoric feeling but it can also leave you at a loss due to relationships you have built with characters in the game. When you fall in love with a game, you are hungry for more content – and game developers are aware of this, working hard to create new levels to extend your journey and start new adventures in a familiar world.
Downloadable Content, or DLC, is exactly what it says on the tin – additional content for download. These usually come at a price, but games will often release a season pass which puts all current and future content in one nice bundle. Be aware that you will need an online connection to download this content, as they are typically sold through your console's online store.
Some games are short, some games are long and some games you never want to end. These are all important things to take into consideration when picking your next big female-fronted quest.
It’s not unusual to be put off games with over 30+ hours of playtime as this is a big responsibility to put on one's shoulders. If this doesn't appeal, there are great female-led games on the market under 15 hours which will have you hooked in the story, backing the character and utterly satisfied with your accomplishments.
Open-world games are typically longer experiences due to the freedom to explore and the associated quests. Other games may follow a linear path or have restricted maps that you unlock after completing the previous one, which may interest people who aren’t ready to delve into hours and hours of gameplay.

Horizon Zero Dawn sees you control one of the strongest women in video game history on her journey across a post-apocalyptic world corrupt with robot dinosaurs. You'll be equipped with your trusty spear, bow and arrow and various other primitive weapons to battle your way through Aloy's adventure.
Aloy is strong, tenacious and determined and the developers have managed to portray this wonderful through the game's immersive story. With a deep story, locals to help, trials to complete and tons of collectables up for grabs, you will find yourself hooked to this game from the first cut scene.
In this highly anticipated sequel to The Last Of Us, we join a familiar face in Ellie and a new female lead Abbie on their revenge-fuelled adventure traversing the post-apocalyptic state of Seattle. Sneak your way around large open areas and dark destroyed buildings to find a path around the infected who will attack on sight.
You'll need to use stealth to kill enemies both human and infected as you find resources to upgrade weapons and create ammunition to aid in your survival. Whilst some players found troubles with the events of the game, this is still a great tale following two strong-willed women.
In Hellblade, you'll put yourself in the shoes of Senua, a heroic young woman with enough strength and force to not only destroy the evil around her but also to deal with her own mental health issues. She is one of the most prominent female protagonists in modern gaming and you'll juggle both sympathy and respect throughout the tale.
This completely immersive game recommends headphones throughout due to its impressive audio with taunting voices inside Senua's head. Not only this, but you need the will to defeat the demons manifesting from your mind as well as using strength to overcome the shifting world around you.
Arising as a true tomb raider, you meet Lara again stronger and fiercer than ever. Equipped with her trusty bow and axe, you have to overcome the antagonistic agency Trinity to prevent them from unleashing supernatural forces through ancient relics.
Lara's familiar strong will is prominent throughout this open-world adventure as you take on one of the darkest tales in the most recent Tomb Raider trilogy. Roaming the complex puzzles and climbing your way across ancient architecture will have you feeling truly tiny as an adventurer.
Naughty Dog creates a refreshing new take on the Uncharted series where we follow the previously supporting character, Chloe, through an action-packed adventure with South African mercenary leader Nadine.
Engage in the duo's witty bantering and growing relationship as you find yourself stealthily working through difficult levels where taking out enemies is key. Throughout this story, you will find yourself collecting relics, scaling dangerous buildings and relying on your trusty partner to survive the tests ahead.
Giving you the option to choose a female protagonist at the beginning of the game, Assassins Creed: Odyssey's narrative pins you deep into the Peloponnesian war between Athens and Sparta. Kassandra is a brilliantly designed character who fiercely goes into battle during a turbulent time.
The open-world aspect of the game can be overwhelming at times due to the incredible size of the map that makes aspects of the gameplay feel repetitive. Despite this, there are various elements that make Kassandra's journey impressive – the fantastic in-game combat, the ship commanding and the ability for same-sex romance keep the game compelling.
Take control of Bayonetta, a witch with no fear of danger as you battle your way through hordes of angels and demons. The hack-and-slash nature of this game leads to engaging and exciting gameplay which will have you hooked from the start.
You'll dodge, kick, punch and evade your way through exciting combat whilst clocking in combos, using torture attacks and summoning demons to your aid. While it is is a lot of fun, the combat can prove challenging for casual gamers.
Become the determined Jill Valentine as you desperately attempt to escape Raccoon City whilst doing all you can to save a city from the clutches of the highly intelligent monster, Nemesis. It isn't long into the game that you root for Jill to survive the horrors ahead of her.
A title filled with great horror elements almost falls short due to the impressive firepower you are equipped with, making your biggest fear running out of ammo. However, you will easily take joy in following Jill's epic evading and battling the huge boss stalking you.
Enter a psychological disaster as you become the new director of a secretive agency that has been invaded by an out-of-this-world threat. Known as Jesse Farden, you're tasked with the difficult challenge to save the agency and, in turn, the world from this haunting.
Equipped with an arsenal of psychic abilities and a trusty handgun, you fight your way through hordes of enemies known as the Hiss. While Control is a breathtaking game, the gameplay sometimes can feel clumsy.
In the second Mirror's Edge game, you again take control of Faith, a runner of secretive and necessary items that are to be kept out of sight from the big-brother-style government agency controlling the world.
Traverse the city's roofs and sneak your way through various large buildings in an open world escapade that requires stealth, combat readiness and a good eye for safe passage. In a game with a handful of flaws, you will find yourself engaging in simplistic combat and challenging parkour running to get from A to B over various levels.
