10 Best Nintendo Switch Games for Adults UK | Bethesda Capcom and More

Did you know the average age of a gamer is 34? Nintendo surely did when they were making the Switch, their now infamous hybrid console. So, alongside the usual cute kid's characters that make up a Nintendo roster, they, and other developers, have gladly made space for some less-than-savoury characters and quests to entertain mature audiences, too.

However, picking the right game is tough. How are you supposed to know what you like? As new video games are released annually, it can be hard to see what's on offer! Luckily, our nifty guide will take you through step by step discussing things like genre types and gameplay functions then honing in on our chosen top 10 easily available from retailers such as Amazon, Argos and eBay.

How to Choose a Nintendo Switch Game for Adults in the UK – Buying Guide

The fact of the matter is, different games appeal to different people. Some of us just want to relax and unwind during our gaming experience, while others want to be dropped into an intense shootout with terrifying zombies. Here, we’ll help you identify exactly which game to add to your basket.

1

Consider the Genre of Gameplay

No-one wants to be left feeling more stressed out than when they picked the game up, so choosing the right style of game is crucial. Let’s break down the different genres and categories, and the sort of skills you’ll be using in them.

Adventure Games Let You Explore From Wherever You Are

If you’re looking for some escapism through exploration, then adventure style games are great. They often incorporate several other elements too, such as problem-solving and fighting against enemies.

Within these games, players tend to find a use for their creativity, logical thinking and strategy skills. There are literally thousands of worlds out there from realism to horror, so there’s certainly a setting for everyone.

Competitive Games Are Great for Getting Family and Friends Involved

We think there’s nothing wrong with a bit of healthy competition. Whether that’s zooming past friends in a racing game or giving them the old one-two in a beat ‘em up. These titles can be a great way to get one’s frustration out and are generally best for those who want a multiplayer game.

If you have fast reasoning, a good dose of self-confidence, quick decision making and good hand-eye coordination, then you’ll likely excel here – and it’s always nice to have something to hold over others in the house. You could even gamble over who does the washing up, just remember to be responsible!

Action Games Get You Pumped and Energised

Action games come in many forms, whether it be brawling, shooting or something in-between. They are the gateway to pumping yourself up trying to out best an opponent... or 50. While it is harder to narrow down what type of action game you may like, this genre is so broad there is no way that you won't find something!

Whether you want to blast people into oblivion or learn tons of tricks and special moves to stay ahead of those trying to get you, action games are the perfect companion to any gamer. More often than not, action games are highly inclusive and let you pick from a wide range of sub-genres, from cyberpunk to fantasy.

Collecting Games Have a Longer Lifespan

A title that has some kind of collecting feature will perfectly suit those after a relaxing game with a longer playing time. These games require users to explore and find hidden objects or animals (sometimes even pocket monsters) that they can then use in other parts of the game.

Another factor of these games is that you can often link up with other users to trade or help each other out, all the while filling in the blanks of the game as you proceed.

Building Games Allow You to Be the Master of Your Own Universe

Building Games Allow You to Be the Master of Your Own Universe

Ever wanted to be the master of the universe? Well, with games where building is incorporated, you can, and on a much larger scale than you could ever imagine. Whether you want to build your own dream house or build a strategic empire, the options are endless.

These games will spark your imagination and creativity and offer almost limitless potential. Some even allow for others to come and see your creations, and vice versa! If you like games that have less emphasis on questing or goals, this is one of the best genres for you.

Strategy Games Are Ideal for Thinkers That Like to Take Things Slow

Strategy games are for those that like to take things slowly but still want a relatively high intensity. Think of them as the poker of video games, where each move and decision you make needs to be carefully thought out to achieve victory.

Usually tackling opponents and planning battles, they require players to be organised, good at recognising problems, and able to think logically. Sometimes challenging yourself and others in these ways can prove just as relaxing as other non-tactical games.

Catch up With Old Pals by Picking a Recognisable Franchise

Source:amazon.co.uk

A sure-fire way to really get into a game is to pick a franchise that you’ve either already played, or at least already heard about and find appealing. Making sure that you buy from a popular franchise ensures some form of assurance that the game is easy enough to get into.

Going about it this way ensures that you’ll have a good idea of what the tone of the game will be like. Plus, you’ll get the chance to walk a mile in the shoes of some of your favourite characters, whether they're from the latest franchises or some familiar faces from the retro games of your youth.

3

Don't Beat Yourself Up - Find the Right Difficulty Level

Don't Beat Yourself Up - Find the Right Difficulty Level

When finding a game, you’ve also got to consider the difficulty. If a title is too easy, it’s not going to keep your attention. Contrastingly, if the game is too difficult, you could become frustrated and end up feeling inadequate, which completely ruins the whole ‘fun’ aspect of gaming.

As everyone has different skillsets it can be hard to analyse what is right for you, but it’s always smart to read the reviews for an indication, too. Or, you could try watching a walkthrough on YouTube or Twitch before making your purchase.

Another idea is to pick a game where the difficulty can be decided by the player, as that way it can be personalised and adapted. Some games come with accessibility support for people who need controls that can be adapted to their physical body's needs.

4

Share the Fun With Games That Have Multiplayer Options

Share the Fun With Games That Have Multiplayer Options

One of the best parts of gaming is sharing it with others. Games with multiplayer options are the best way to do that, and can bring families and friends together. The Nintendo Switch has two different multiplayer options: you can play ‘locally’, which involves 2 players using one system, or by hooking multiple machines up together.

Some titles also allow you to play online with other users of the same game. These are particularly entertaining when playing competitive games, as the added element of ‘winning’ or ‘losing’ adds to the experience. Just check the game box to find out!

Horror Has A Home: Remothered

Remothered, the critically acclaimed game which originally released in 2018, has made its way to the Switch. Compared to other Switch titles this game is made for adults who love and appreciate horror

Playing as Rosemary Reed, you find yourself navigating a terrifying mansion with people trying to find you and kill you. Being able to manage your own fear, while dealing with Rosemary's provides a new level of immersion, fun and almost always ends in a few screams. A notable and worthy runner up.

The Elder Scrolls' Timeless Classic

Skyrim is the type of open-world fantasy that makes you realise why video games exist. With superb voice acting, smooth gameplay - no matter how you play - this game has something in it for everyone.

The best part about role-playing games are that they let you play how you want to. Do you want to destroy that villager? Do it. Bake a cake? Do it. Immersion and escapism become one in Skyrim and you'll find yourself falling in love with the landscape quicker than pressing play.

If You're Looking for a Good Ole Beat 'Em Up, Get Over Here!

An expertly gorgeous and gory fighting game, the latest instalment of Mortal Kombat has transferred on to a handheld console seamlessly and the fighting mechanics work superbly. If you're looking to deliver skull-crushing blows and destructive fatalities, there's no other place for you to be.

There are new features too, such as character customisation, which gives you unprecedented control over both the returning classic characters and the new ones. Play versus matches online, solo or spend some time in Story Mode. This game is full to the brim with content.

Quite Possibly the Best Handheld FPS Game Ever Created

Looking to mindlessly destroy and blow up demons in an ultra-violent setting? You're in luck, if so. Doom really needs no introduction – the action-centric FPS game focuses on keeping players gripped with a fast-paced gaming experience more so than a story-driven narrative.

The action is intense and you'll find yourself hitting a rhythmic flow reminiscent of older arcade games when playing this, though granted it looks much sleeker. We think it's fair to say that this is the greatest, most advanced and most addictive FPS game ever created on a handheld console.

A Healthy Dose of Slow-Paced Wholesomeness

Embrace your inner creativity and build a perfect home on a perfect island that perfectly portrays your self-expression. Animal Crossing is a truly wholesome game – there's no real objective other than just enjoying yourself and going with the flow.

This game is filled with many endearing moments thanks to a host of cute anthropomorphic characters. However, the cherry on top of all of this overloaded cuteness is the fact that you can share it all with family and friends, visiting each other's islands and sending each other gifts.

A True Return to Form for a Classic Gaming Franchise

While the Ocarina of Time is often quoted as being the best video game ever, that unfortunately places a heavy burden on the game's successors – one which has led to the producers often sticking to a rigid formula of nostalgia and familiarity. What a lovely surprise, then, Breath of the Wild is.

The open-world game is vast and positively stunning, but most of all, innovative. While you can get better and stronger gear throughout the game, Link (the main character) does not get stronger, that's on you, so you'll need to get smart. A true return to form from a classic gaming franchise.

An AA RPG Ready to Rock

From some of the creators of Fallout comes a new IP ready to take on the masses. The Outer Worlds is a story driven, first person open world RPG that is sure to leave your breath... taken.

With engaging characters to help and a looming quest to solve, time is of the essence. Make sure you pack heavy because the Outer Worlds packs a punch when push comes to shove. Highly recommended for those who love RPGs and want to try something newer in formula.

Two Truly Terrifying Survival Adventures

Incorporating elements of adventure, survival, puzzle-solving, action and horror, the Resident Evil franchise has spawned action films, animated films, comic books, novels, audio dramas, and more. This Switch title, however, is a fusion of two previously released games.

Both games have rich, self-aware, and terrifying plot structures that will have you chomping at the bit to get back on the bus and play again. The gameplay, when compared to other Resident Evil games, feels much lighter and more cartoonish, so bear that in mind if you want super realistic horror experience.

Conquer the World One Turn at a Time

The Civilisation franchise first popped up in the early 90s, and has since gained a large cult-like following. A turn-based strategy game, the premise is to build your civilisation and take on other notable world leaders by exploring, expanding, and exploiting, eventually taking control of the whole world.

Usually played on PC, in recent years it was adapted for tablets and phones, then eventually the Nintendo Switch too, where it smartly utilises the system's functions. Our big disappointment was that this title doesn't feature any online multiplayer action, as this seems what it is ultimately destined for.

5 Hidden Tricks Your Nintendo Switch Can Do

5 Hidden Tricks Your Nintendo Switch Can Do
Source:argos.co.uk

The Switch really is the perfect console in so many ways, but we're about to make it even better. Here are some secret tricks and hidden functions that only a few users end up discovering:

  1. You can actually unlock your Switch by pressing any button 3 times, and each one plays a different sound when you do so – think frog croaks, honking horns, and silly squeaks.
  2. Eyesight not the best? Fed up of typing messages on tiny keyboards? You can plug a USB keyboard into your Switch, though it doesn't work when docked or for actual gameplay.
  3. Talking of which, the Switch is also compatible with controllers other than Joy-Cons, so you can hook up your GameCube pads or PS4 DualShock 4's if you like.
  4. Lost a Joy-Con somewhere in the sofa? On the 'Controllers' section of your home screen, select the one you've misplaced. Hold the shoulder button on the other Joy-Con, and the lost one will vibrate loudly to help you hunt it down.
  5.  For a little relief during those all-night sessions, you can change your screen to dark mode by going to 'Settings', then 'Themes', then selecting 'Basic Black'.
