The Nintendo Switch is the most versatile console on the market at the moment, being both a home entertainment system and a portable handheld. It is also currently the most popular, having sold over 90 million units worldwide. This massive popularity combined with the adaptability of the console has resulted in a plethora of various accessories, some of which are even tailor-made for specific games.
There’s no doubt that the Switch, the Switch Lite and the new OLED model are fantastic consoles in their own right, but picking up a few accessories can make playing favourites like Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros and Pokémon even more fun. From cases and covers to Joy-Cons holders and bundles, we're here to guide you through the best accessories and show you where to find them on Amazon, Argos and more.

The first thing to mention is that there are currently three versions of the Switch on the market, the base console, the handheld-only Switch Lite and the new, improved OLED. The Lite is slightly smaller than the original while the OLED has a larger screen but is actually the same size as it has a slimmer bezel.
However, with all games playable on every Switch and the OLED and original able to share Joy-Cons too, there are some accessories suitable for all three, such as chargers and screen protectors. Some cases fit all models, which could be useful if your household has multiple consoles, though specific designs may offer a more secure fit.
Naturally, newer OLED accessories have been released to match its slightly more grown-up black-and-white colour scheme, so keep an eye out for those if you want to maintain the monochrome aesthetic. Whichever console, or consoles, you have, make sure to double-check which each accessory is suitable for.
Whether you’re playing Mario Kart or Super Smash Bros, some of the best titles to play on the Switch at home have strong multiplayer gameplay, with many allowing up to four people to play simultaneously on the same console.
A pair of Joy-Cons are included as standard with the console, which is the minimum for two players, but these are far from ideal for a good multiplayer experience. An additional pair takes that number up to four players, but those serious about their gameplay will find that a more traditionally designed controller, or arcade stick, will provide a much better experience.

Using a single Joy-Con as a controller, rather than when paired together, isn’t the most comfortable due to its small size. If you occasionally play multiplayer games and aren’t looking to pick up an additional controller, a Joy-Con holder is perfect for adding some comfort and versatility to what you already have.
There are also a number of specialist holders for specific genres of games – some come bundled in with certain titles, and others are available separately. Whether you are a fan of racing, platformers, or party games, there are Joy-Con holders out there for you!
When docked, the Switch is only able to charge two Joy-Cons at a time. This presents a number of problems as you are unable to use those controllers while they are charging and cannot charge any additional Joy-Cons at the same time.
Investing in a dedicated charging solution ensures that you’re always able to play. A charging grip allows you to use the Joy-Cons together as a more traditionally-designed controller while simultaneously charging them. Another option is a standalone charging dock, which can keep multiple Joy-Cons, or wireless pro-controllers, juiced up for whenever you need them.
When taking your Switch out and about, you’ll need a carry case in order to keep it protected from the weather and any accidents while you’re on your travels. The best carry cases also provide pockets for extra game cartridges, and some even have ample space for a charger or battery pack if you spend a lot of time out of the house.
We’d recommend a hard-shelled case for extra security against any knocks or drops, but if you’re planning on transporting your Switch in a backpack, a soft-shelled case can still protect it from banging up against your other belongings.

There's nothing worse than getting scratches or chips on a touchscreen device. Having them distort the images is bad enough, but when you factor in the possibility of losing functionality things can get scary. That small crack could make some games completely unplayable if the screen can no longer register your touch.
A screen protector is an absolute must-buy for anyone owning a Switch. Even if you rarely take your console out of the home, it can prevent scratches when placing it in the dock, and outside of the home it is an absolute necessity.
As well as there being three versions of the Switch, there are also two different iterations of the base model which are only distinguishable by their serial numbers. The earlier released consoles, with a serial number that begins “XA”, have a battery life between 2.5 to 6.5 hours, whereas the newer models, with serial numbers beginning with “XK”, have between 4.5 to 9.5 hours. The Lite has between 3 and 7 hours.
Realistically, if you’re playing an intensive game on a long journey, you’ll be at the lower end of that range so will need some way of charging your Switch on the go. A portable USB battery pack is the most efficient way to give your console some extra juice, but it can be annoying having something attached while playing.
If this is the case, it may be worth considering a specific charging case that is designed to elegantly fit around your Switch, allowing you to play freely without having to find a place to balance any extra peripherals.
If you prefer digital games for portability, you might find a Switch SD card useful

There are many items that can help you get the most out of your Switch, but fully kitting out your console can be expensive and time-consuming. As well as a carry case and screen protector, which are necessities for playing portably, it also has a Joy-Con charger, wheel set and holders for playing at home alongside grips, styluses and more.
The sheer amount of items makes this bundle great value and a great present for a new Switch owner. Plus, it's available in either OLED or original model versions and in several colour choices, too.
This is the one accessory that is an absolute must-buy for anyone who owns a Nintendo Switch. These protectors have been designed especially for the console, fitting precisely without interfering with the touchscreen's sensitivity or occluding visibility. The tempered glass has been engineered to resist scratches and impact.
There are two protectors included, meaning that if one somehow becomes damaged, it is easy to replace with the spare. Also included is a wet-wipe, dust removal stickers, and a microfiber cloth to clean the screen before installation.
Usually when you opt for a budget option, you expect there to be a feature missing that you'd find in a premium option, or you're willing to sacrifice some quality in its manufacture. The Orzly Carry Case has all the features of a premium product at a budget price.
The elastic straps keep your Switch, or Switch Lite, securely in place with a shock-absorbent, waterproof, EVA shell, which is available in several different colours. Plus, there is plenty of space for extra Joy-Cons and wires, and it even has a little pocket for you to tuck in extra games.
If you're serious about playing games on your Switch at home, the wireless Pro Controller is the way to go. It features motion controls, a rumble, and a comfortable grip. While revolutionary, the Joy-Cons included with the Switch aren't ideal for many third party games.
The price may seem a little steep, but cheap controllers are very much a false economy. Investing in a Pro Controller will be cheaper than replacing multiple budget controllers in the long run.
Anyone who has used a single Joy-Con to play Super Smash Bros, Mario Kart or Rocket League against a sibling or friend will know how uncomfortable it becomes holding such a small controller for an extended period of time; these grips are a great budget solution.
For many, the occasional multiplayer session isn't worth investing £70 for an extra pair of Joy-Cons. While these holders don't solve the cramped button layout, they do take the strain off your hands and make the single Joy-Con far more comfortable to use. They even come in a wide range of colours!
The Joy-Con Charging Grip is a must have for those of you who prefer the feel of a traditional controller without wanting to invest in one. Much like with when using the Switch in its handheld mode, the two Joy-Cons slide into either side of the holder to create a familiar controller layout.
Unlike other holders, this version has a built-in battery pack with a USB-C port and cable meaning you can charge your Joy-Cons while using them when your Switch is docked. Even if the batteries are completely flat in the Joy-Cons and holder, you can play while the cable is attached and powering everything.
This ergonomically-designed case fits neatly around your Switch, providing some extra grip when playing in handheld mode, but the big draw of this accessory is the 10,000 mAh built-in battery which is enough to fully recharge your console twice over.
While this is a great option for those looking to play portably with its additional kickstand, it almost triples the weight of the console itself which can be an issue when holding it in its handheld mode. It may be worth considering purchasing a protective case and a portable battery separately.
This satchel has been designed solely with the Switch in mind, containing pockets for the docking station, chargers, extra controllers, and more. The Switch itself sits in a detachable pouch, with pockets for extra game cartridges, meaning you can take the whole bag or just a compact handheld case.
The detachable pouch is a nice addition, but it isn't really a substitute for a more protective case. If you're planning on regularly transporting your Switch to play at someone else's house, this is an excellent pick-up.
If you're a fan of Mario Kart and want to really feel like you're drifting through those laps and avoiding those green shells, you really can't go wrong by picking up a pair of these steering wheel accessories.
Surprisingly though, apart from Mario Kart and a small handful of other titles, there aren't many racing games on the Switch that make the most of the Joy-Con's motion controls. These are, however, perfect for those that do.
The last thing you want when you're on a long journey is to see your battery dying when you're midway through a difficult dungeon, as the story you've been invested in for twenty hours fades to black. Luckily, with a portable charger like this one, you won't have to worry about losing any game progress.
This power bank can hold up to 26,800 mAh – the base model Switch comes with a 4,310 mAh battery, so it holds enough to charge your Switch up to six times over! The reason this sits so low on our list is that it isn't specifically designed for the Switch, plus, it doesn't come with a USB-C wire so you'll have to use the one that came with your console.
