First and foremost you should consider which sport the game is based on. You might want to stick to what you know, such as football and racing, or you might prefer to try your hand at a new emerging sport, like UFC.
If you're interested in a specific sport, look to established franchise games for a more authentic experience. For example, FIFA games are the perfect choice for football fans, while NBA lets you play as your favourite stars on the basketball court,
Be aware that some games don't include career or management modes, which are a big part of sports games for a lot of us. Remember, this is supposed to be fun, so forcing yourself to play games that don’t entertain or engage you, perhaps because other people are, is a waste of your time and energy.
Fans of racing and motorsports will be spoilt for choice with this selection of the 10 best on Playstation!
Arguably one of the most essential parts of a sports game is the ability to play it with others. You have two options when it comes to competing: either playing locally with your friends or testing yourself online against strangers. Fortunately, most sports games give you the option of both.
It has to be said, though, that games with local, split-screen multiplayer modes are dying out nowadays, with more people choosing to play online. But several titles still do include the option, including many in our ranking, if this is something you are set on.
Another less popular multiplayer game style is to play co-operatively with your friends. However, this can only work when playing team sports, as you can't both control one single motocross racer, can you?
Feeling competitive? Here are the 10 best multiplayer games for the PS5!
If you plan on buying the game to play online, then you are likely going to need to purchase a PlayStation Plus subscription.
This subscription is required for practically all online multiplayer modes, so it's worth a check. The cost varies depending on how you choose to pay it, with monthly, quarterly or annual payment options. Of course, the more you pay upfront, the cheaper it will work out in the long run.
Once you have the console, there is a 14-day free trial period, so if you’re unsure of why you would want to play online, you can try before you buy. Also, although you have to pay, you can cancel this subscription at any time, and as long as it is 24 hours before your renewal day, you won’t be charged. Something to think about!
Although the PS5 is a new console, did you know that it is backwards compatible? Therefore, if you’ve been unable to find a certain type of sports title that you like on the PS5, but you know that it’s available on the PS4, you’ll still be able to play it.
Most of the PS4 versions of games have been given updates to run on the PS5 or will be given updates in the coming months. These updates increase how glorious the graphics are and reduce waiting times, two things we all want in a game, so don't forget to check the update status if you do go for a PS4 title.
Additionally, you can still use old controllers when playing these games, meaning that you don’t have to fork out for the expensive new controllers if you want to play local multiplayer with a friend.
Enhance your gaming experience with the best accessories for the PS5!

When it comes to the nation's no.1 sports game, there was only ever going to be one winner: FIFA. It's a game that takes the UK's most popular sport, and our most famous stars, putting them in our hands - and we're grateful for it!
FIFA 22 puts the new gen gameplay engines to work, with true ball physics and hypermotion gameplay technology. One of the biggest improvements is the speed of play, which seems to have hit a sweet spot between being realistic whilst maintaining its entertainment value. Put simply, chances are that if you like football, you'll love FIFA.
The initial Tony Hawk games are iconic, with Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 sitting pretty in the top 3 sports games ever made on Metacritic. Luckily, the folks at Vicarious Visions have nailed the recreation of this action sports classic, rebuilt in stunning HD.
The games perfectly grind the balance between classic and contemporary. They're faithful to the old moves, maps and era-defining songs but manage to create and tell the story through a modern lens. If you know the old games back to front, you'll be happy to know that there are plenty of new challenges and characters too.
With improved shooting and dribbling mechanisms, this year's NBA 2K22 resets the learning curve for many experienced players, which in turn ensures a more engaging and challenging experience. In previous iterations, players were only required to time the shot correctly. With shot-stick, a mechanic introduced in NBA 2K21, you now have to aim precisely too.
When you're in full swing, it has some of the best sports gameplay ever. Plus, the player builder has added depth. So should you opt for career mode instead of playing with established teams, you'll be able to customise your player more than ever before.
The UFC has been steadily growing in popularity over the last decade or so, and has since created a gaming franchise. The latest game keeps many of the improvements of UFC 3, focusing on minor adjustments instead of any overhauls.
The biggest tweak is the fight mechanics, especially when it comes to the clinch, which is much easier to break from and feels like a natural extension of the combat. The other change is with submissions, which splits them into a minigame and sees you race to fill up the submit or escape meter first. It's a clever follow up that takes nothing away and adds a few necessary tweaks.
Dirt 5 speeds into first place when it comes to racing games on the PS5. The developers ditched the realistic stimulator style of its predecessor and instead opted for a fast, frantic and fun arcade take on the racing game. You can see the influence of retro racers with subtle hints to SEGA Rally Revo, RalliSport Challenge and many more.
The modern console has been embraced too, taking advantage of the haptic feedback, the insanely realistic graphics and an optional 120 fps rate. It might not have the depth of some other racing games, but that doesn't make it any less entertaining. Plus, it has a fun story-driven career mode.
Sometimes with sports games, it can feel like you're playing last year's version, but in the case of PES, you are. Hey, at least they're honest about it. There are some upgrades, such as the team kits, new Legend managers in the master league, new background shots in the menus and whatever hairstyle Neymar has chosen this week, but other than that, it's largely the same.
The reason for this is simply that development was stalled due to the pandemic – so while it might not be a new game, at least that's reflected in its wallet-friendly price. Keep your eyes peeled for future online updates and a new release next year, though.
MXGP 2021 offers Motocross fans the most realistic gameplay yet! This is largely down to the new PS5's dual sense controls, as the haptic feedback gives you the ability to feel the track underneath your fingertips.
In-game, you'll get access to more than 40 riders, including the official MXGP and MX2 2021 season bikes, teams, sponsors and championship tracks. Just be aware that MXGP 2021 is only available for digital download on Playstation.com.
Although not one of the more conventional sports on our island, NFL has been growing in popularity over the past few years. The Madden gaming franchise shares many similar traits with the FIFA games, partly because it's by the same developers. So expect online modes such as Ultimate Team and story-based game modes too.
NFL 22 gives you the option to win the Super Bowl as a player, coach or owner with the most extensive character builder to date. There's also plenty of fast-paced online and multiplayer modes that really take social gameplay to the next level!
There are many player modes available for those that are dying to make it to the court. Firstly, you have the classic exhibition match for a quick-fix, which you can also play locally with up to three players for singles and doubles. There's also an online mode featuring player-hosted tournaments.
However, the big feature here is the career mode, which sees you take a custom player on the journey to win a grand slam. The playing mechanisms are surprisingly challenging, so taking time to practice is vital but rewarding. The only let down is that the roster of professional players is missing some key figures, such as the Williams sisters and Novak Djokovic.
F1 is often fronted by its superstars, like Hamilton and Schumacher, but it is, in fact, a team sport. In the latest incarnation of the game franchise, the developers have added two-player career mode that let's you share the experience cooperatively, or competitively!
This blows the previous career modes out of the water, offering a wider range of outcomes, making repeat gameplay highly addictive. F1 2021 also sees the welcome return of 'My Team' Mode, allowing you to compete as the 11th team on the grid.
