How to Choose a PS5 RPG in the UK ― Buying Guide

In this guide, not only will we go over the different styles of RPG games available, but other practical considerations, such as game time, additional content and the age rating. That way, whether you're buying your first RPG or are a veteran gamer, you'll be able to find the perfect title for you!

1

Choose a Fictional Setting or Style

The first thing you need to consider is where you want your adventure to take place. Although the possibilities are practically endless, especially as more games are released onto the platform, here we'll discuss the most popular RPG settings.

Fantasy Titles Create Engaging Worlds

Fantasy Titles Create Engaging Worlds

Fantasy RPG's are by far the most traditional and widely available. These games are set within fantasy realms containing mythical creatures and supernatural powers

One of the most impressive aspects of a fantasy RPG is the in-game world-building, with vast areas that are often open for your character to explore. Not only do they look visually striking, but the lore, complex histories, family trees and even new languages create a complex culture that will make you feel that you're part of the world itself.

Sci-Fi Will Let You Travel to the Future

Sci-Fi Will Let You Travel to the Future

Sci-Fi is a broad genre, with many sub-genres within it. However, there are some frequent themes found across science fiction titles. For example, science and technology are the foundations of many Sci-Fi RPGs, whether the game takes place in a pre-industrialised steampunk setting, or and advanced alien spacecraft.

Often, you find that Sci-Fi storylines are set against the backdrop of a dystopian future. With these games, you can expect a brawling Blade Runner-esque metropolis, or gritty neo-noir taking place on another planet. At the end of the day, if you fascinated with what the future could look like, then this will be right up your street!

Realism Can Take You Through the Ages

Realism Can Take You Through the Ages

While many of us lead ordinary lives, that isn't to say that we're not attracted to, or mesmerised by the world around us. Many RPGs use the world we already know as the setting, and instead thrust the player into a life they would never usually experience, a good example of this being the popular Grand Theft Auto series.

RPGs set in a real-life setting don't just take place in the modern world we know today, players can also go back in time to experience the past. Whether it's America's wild west, or the middle-east during the first Crusades, the options are endless, and while the plots themselves might be fictional, the settings often have a decent level of historical accuracy.

2

Is More Always Better? Find a Suitable Game Length

Is More Always Better? Find a Suitable Game Length

One thing worth considering is how long the game is. This will vary depending on how willing you are to complete all the side quests, but when it comes to measuring the total game time, most people estimate this based on how long it should take to finish the main storyline.

Games can vary wildly in length from under 10, to 50 hours or more, and while more is generally considered better, that might not be the case if you do not have the time to dedicate.

If you only play casually, then a game with a shorter playtime may be beneficial, as you’ll make solid progress through the story without becoming overwhelmed. If you're willing to commit more time, then a story with more hours will see you get the most for your money.

3

Take Control of Your Favourite Characters by Choosing a Beloved Franchise

Take Control of Your Favourite Characters by Choosing a Beloved Franchise
Source:amazon.co.uk

One of the best parts of an RPG is that we get to become characters that we would never be able to otherwise. By choosing a game tied into a popular franchise, you can take on the mantle of some of your favourite fictional characters.

Whether you’ve always wondered how you’d get on as Spider-Man, or fancied yourself as a Jedi, finding titles that are related to our favourite franchises allows us to be the heroes we always wanted to. It's also a good indicator of whether you're going to enjoy the themes of a game. After all, if you already like a particular world or story, then chances are you will enjoy an RPG connected to it.

That said, if you’re not familiar with any particular franchise, this shouldn’t put you off. Some of the best games ever created were not affiliated to franchises initially, but have spawned their own after the release. For example, Halo and the record-breaking The Last of Us

4

Look for Additional Online Content To Get More From Your Game

Look for Additional Online Content To Get More From Your Game

Another way of getting more from your game is by checking whether they offer any additional online content. This can come in many forms, for instance, some games offer online modes that see you either team up or fight against other players.

Additionally, you have games that offer further DLC (downloadable content). This can be in the form of new missions or quests, or new gadgets and gizmos for your character. Either way, both of these continue to breathe life into a game, even after you’ve already completed it.

5

Look for the PEGI Rating To See if It's Age Appropriate

Look for the PEGI Rating To See if It's Age Appropriate

This might sound obvious, but you should check the age rating to make sure it is appropriate, especially when buying for kids and young teens. In the UK, games are categorised by Pan European Game Information, or PEGI for short.

PEGI classifications are assigned by age, and you’ll be able to find games suitable from 7+ to 18+.  This rating can be found on the bottom left-hand corner of the front of the case and will be either green, orange or red.

The PEGI rating will also provide information on sensitive themes, such as violence, offensive language, or depictions of nudity and sexual references. However, this will likely be found on the back of the case and not near the number rating.

A Return To Form for a Classic Franchise

Taking our number 1 spot is the latest instalment for the ever-growing Assassin's Creed franchise. This time it's set in the Dark Ages, and you will play as a Viking raider leading their fellow Vikings against an unwitting Anglo-Saxon kingdom - England!

While the series has had it's ups and downs, this game is a return to form. It's big, bold and incredibly beautiful, perfectly utilising the PS5's enhanced graphics. Not only that, but it reinstates some of the original features that made the series such a hit, alongside fresh new systems. All resulting in a game that feels fluid, focussed and nuanced.

A Brilliant Way To Break in Your New Console

Who hasn't wanted to be the web-slinger at some point in their lives? This offering is the second of the latest Spider-Man games from the Marvel franchise, taking up the mantle from the hugely successful Spider-Man PS4 game in 2018.

This time, you play as Miles Morales, not Peter Parker. While the character might be new, the same old web-slinging and swinging mechanics, storytelling, and animation have all returned. Add to that the new PS5 dual sense controller and the stunning graphics, and there is no better way to break in your new console!

A Cult Classic Brought Back From the Dark Ages

Originally released in 2009 for the PS3, Demon's Souls has a strong cult following, so creating a remake had the potential for causing a lot of upset. Thankfully, the team tasked with the job - Bluepoint, who also remastered Shadow of Colossus in 2018, have done a sterling job at bringing this series back to the forefront of gaming!

With deep character development, difficult decisions to be made and methodical combat, the game isn't for those who want an easy ride. That said, when you do get it right, it's incredibly rewarding, in a way that not many other games can match.

Two Exciting RPGs for the Price of One

What's better than getting one new game? Getting two new games, of course! We may have made a conservative estimate of 150 hours of game time, but if you're the sort of person who likes to tick everything off the list, you could easily add another 50 - 70 hours on top.

The series is a dark fantasy that utilises real-life locations and follows specific timelines throughout Japanese history, which give these games a unique flavour. You'll play as protagonist William Adams, an Irishman in pursuit of an enemy, but don't be surprised if you get tangled up fighting the demons infesting Japan too!

New Playable Characters in a New Adventure

Ratchet and Clank have been around the block, first appearing way back on the PS2 in 2002! The pair work like a buddy cop duo, as they traverse across multiple planets in many different realities collecting gadgets and guns and taking down bad guys.

In this latest offering, they'll be up to more of their old shenanigans, but this time with the inclusion of a new female playable character. Together, they'll be teaming up to stop a villainous emperor from exploiting the dimensional collapse of the universe.

Get Your Great Greek Weapons at the Ready

Steeped in Greek mythology, this is an RPG that follows Fenyx, a mortal who has been granted the wings of Daidalos, the sword of Achilles and the bow of Odysseus. He, or she, depending on who you choose, is then summoned by Zeus and Prometheus to take down the evil Typhon!

The combat and story-telling are a joy throughout, with just a touch of Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. That said, some of the puzzles have a bit too much of a workman-like approach, which can drain the momentum out of the adventuring at times.

New Elements That Soul-Like Lovers Will Relish

Mortal Shell is more than a little influenced by earlier games like Dark Souls and Bloodthorn. That said, it still manages to introduce enough new elements for players to enjoy. Of course, the stand out feature is the body-swapping dynamic that sees your character jump between different shells, helping to diversify the playstyle throughout the game.

Moreover, it uses a clever identification system. In this game, you can't learn about new items until you use them, further encouraging exploration. It might be a bit short in terms of game time, but if you're a fan of the Soul-like games, it'll be worth your time.

A Brave New Step for a Well-Loved Series

This title is number eight in the Yakuza series, and on our list! Brave steps have been taken to advance this series from it's classic beat 'em up roots, with the developers choosing to opt for a more structured turn-based fighting mechanic in this this instalment.

This new battle system might seem off-putting for some, but it does bring a more tactical side to the gameplay, without sacrificing the original style. There are also new characters and a new setting of Yokohama. There are some issues, such as the seemingly huge difficulty spike in the later chapters, but nothing a bit of patience can't solve!

A Contemporary Take on One of the All Time Classics

Final Fantasy VII was originally released in 1997 and is arguably one of the greatest games ever made. With heavy themes of steampunk, sci-fi and fantasy, you'll follow a band of heroes as they try to save The Planet, as it's life-force is being drained away by an electric power company.

It does deviate from the original in some aspects. For example, the battle systems have been modernised, and the stories for some of the side characters are a bit more fleshed out. That said, many may not want to replay, and re-pay, for a game that they've already completed, which is understandable.

A Beautiful Open World for You to to Explore

In The Pathless, the gameplay is simple. There are no fancy features like fast travel, instead, you have one weapon and one ally, your eagle companion. This, coupled with the seamless movement mechanics, makes exploration of the open world a treat - you'll soon understand how they settled upon the name.

The lush open world and the mythical music score are works of art within themselves, and while the freedom to explore is fun, there is an intriguing central plot featuring some typical fantasy elements. However, if we had to be critical, the 8-hour storyline is a little thin.

What Is an RPG?

What Is an RPG?

Before we get stuck into the article, it's important to outline what an RPG is. The term 'RPG' stands for 'Role Playing Game', this is a game in which you control a character (or characters) as they undertake a fictional quest or adventure.

Generally speaking, traditional RPG’s share many of the same elements. For instance, your character will most likely belong to a 'class' with defined attributes (think wizard, thief, soldier). Although, you’ll be able to upgrade your character as you progress through the game.

Whether it's open world or not, there will be a central storyline that runs throughout the game, and usually side quests to complete too. However, depending on the game you choose, the combat system and the ability to interact with the environment will vary. Of course, not all RPG’s will contain all of these elements, but they’ll typically feature at least one or two of them.

Summary

We hope that after reading this article on the best RPGs for PS5, you've found something that tickles your fancy. From classic franchises to brand new stories, all the games in our ranking are engaging and immersive, so we've no doubt that you'll happily while away plenty of hours playing!
