As there are so many multiplayer games available on the PS5, it can be difficult to determine what kind of experience each one offers. Call of Duty or FIFA '21, for example, can be played both co-operatively and competitively, as well as online and offline, but some titles may only offer online multiplayer or local co-op.
While it may seem obvious what the differences between co-op and competitive play are, there may be a few things to clarify.
While playing an online shooter, for example, there may be co-operative elements as you're playing on the same team as your friends, but it would still be classified as a competitive game because you’re competing against other players or teams.
For the purposes of this guide, we’re treating co-op play as something two players do together in order to beat the game itself; this could be part of a story driven experience like A Way Out, or a mode like Call of Duty: Zombies where players team up to beat a challenge that the game has set.
We’re guessing that if you’re reading this article you have an internet connection, which means you have the capacity to play games online. As well as being really easy to set up, many online multiplayer games also team you up with players from all around the world, which can be an extremely enjoyable way to make friends.
Local multiplayer, or couch co-op as it’s sometimes known, is when two or more players are able to play the same game on the same console. If you’re old enough to remember the PS1 and PS2 era, playing Tekken or Gran Turismo while sitting next to friends or siblings, you’re already well aware of the joys of local multiplayer.
Local multiplayer is less common than online play nowadays, but many games still include the experience, including almost all of our recommendations.
It’s worth noting that some games require a PS Plus subscription in order to play online, so it's wise to check before you buy if you don't have one. That said, we think the service is well worth purchasing.
As well as the online functionality, each subscriber gets a number of PS4 and PS5 games added to their account each month which they can play anytime they want, provided they are still subscribed to the service.
Some genres of games naturally lend themselves to multiplayer gameplay better than others, which is why you tend to see a lot of sports titles, racing simulators and first-person shooters on lists like this and not many RPGs or visual novels.
While there are some of the usual suspects you would expect in our top 10, we’ve tried to include a slightly wider range of genres than you would usually find on a list like this. There are some very innovative multiplayer experiences to find on the PS5 that we think you will enjoy.
Something that may not be apparent is that 99% of PS4 games work on the PS5; this isn’t just regular backwards compatibility, though, as many games have specially-updated PS5 versions either out now or in the pipeline. These updates range from increased graphical fidelity to drastically reduced loading times and even extra PS5-exclusive content.
The old DualShock 4 controllers, which came with the PS4, work with these games so you’ll be able to enjoy some of the local co-op experiences you may have missed before if you’re worried about shelling out the additional cost for an extra DualSense controller.

You'd have to have been living under a rock for the last three years to not have heard of Fortnite and, like Minecraft, it has become something of a cultural phenomenon. There are Fortnite toys, clothes, and countless other merchandise available.
The game itself is still one of the best around, constantly evolving with each new season and battle pass; there's now an updated PS5 version available as well. While free to play, it's well worth picking up a bundle like this in order to gain exclusive skins and spend your V-Bucks on the latest battle pass for even more goodies!
It would be no surprise if you hadn't heard of the Guilty Gear games before as they were something of a cult classic; big in the fighting games community but without widespread coverage. Their makers, Arc System Works, gained a lot of popularity with the 2018 release of Dragon Ball FighterZ and now everyone is talking about Guilty Gear Strive.
Whether you're looking to climb the online leaderboards or have a few matches with some friends, Guilty Gear Strive is hands down the best fighting game experience on the PS5. Playing online suffers no delay or lag due to the game's implementation of rollback netcode which is a huge leap forward in online gaming.
You probably don't need us to explain what FIFA is; it's the best football game on the market and some of the best fun you can have on a sofa with some mates or seriously competing against others online in the popular Ultimate Team mode.
You can actually purchase the PS4 edition of FIFA 21 and upgrade it for free to the PS5 version and enjoy faster load times and better graphics. This is as simple as popping the PS4 disc into the PS5 and downloading an update.
Demon's Souls is not a traditional multiplayer game by any means, but it is one of the best games available on the PS5. The first in the so-called "souls-borne" genre, this is actually a complete remake of a PS3 game and is one of the most visually stunning and fully realised worlds in all of gaming.
The multiplayer aspect allows you to summon other players into your world to help you progress and also invade other people's worlds in order to hunt them down and defeat them in battle. There are also other multiplayer elements, but we wouldn't want to spoil anything...
After something of a rocky launch, No Man's Sky has gone above and beyond its initial promises, with update after update adding more and more things to do. With its most recent update, it has become one of the best online co-op experiences you can have on the PS5.
If you're a fan of anything sci-fi, you'd be doing yourself a disservice not checking out this title. It even has VR support, meaning you can't get any closer to the feeling of stepping foot on a new, alien planet with friends before jumping in your spaceship and flying off to the next.
With most co-op games you're working together with a group of friends in order to achieve a common goal; this is true with Sackboy: A Big Adventure, but a lot of the fun in this game is messing with your friends.
There is something extremely pleasurable in working towards beating a level and then knocking your companion into a pit or off the side of a cliff. Sackboy leans into this chaos, encouraging you to have fun without punishing mistakes while retaining a challenge. This is great for children, or if you want to feel like a child again.
Overcooked! All You Can Eat challenges players to work together in order to run a restaurant by cooking dishes, serving them, and washing plates; it is way more fun than it sounds. The levels are filled with wacky shenanigans, taking place in haunted houses, lava filled volcanos and outer space.
If you're familiar with the Worms series of games, you'll have some idea of the chaos that emerges from the gameplay, as one of you is running around trying to find a clean plate while your kitchen is on fire and the burger your team-mate has cooked is disappearing out of sight along a conveyor belt.
If you're looking for a great puzzle game you can play with friends either online of offline, Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 is the best experience you'll find on the PS5. We're going to assume you're familiar with Tetris, but Puyo Puyo gameplay revolves around matching the same colour blobs together to clear the screen.
The multiplayer in this game pits two players directly against one another in a heated head-to-head battle to prove who is best. If you have a competitive streak with a friend or partner, this is the game to prove who has the biggest brain once and for all!
Minecraft has been something of a cultural phenomenon in the last 10 years, allowing you to build whatever your imagination can come up with; it is often referred to as the video game equivalent of playing with a LEGO set. Whether you're exploring dungeons and caverns or building a town, Minecraft is some of the best multiplayer fun you can have on PS5.
The only reason that this sits at the number 10 spot on our list is because an updated PS5 version is still a little way out, but the PS4 version still works perfectly on the PS5 console. Perfect for encouraging creativity in either children or adults.
