More and more people are becoming vegan for a variety of ethical and personal reasons. Of course, you don't have to be a vegan to enjoy tasty vegan snacks — many of us like a little break from animal-based products sometimes. Whatever your dietary preferences, here are our top tips on selecting the best vegan snacks online!
The kind of snack you fancy will depend on your mood at the time. Maybe you are looking to stock up on sweet vegan treats, or perhaps plant-based savoury snacks if you prefer something salty.
If you have a bit of a sweet tooth, these days there are plenty of vegan treats to choose from to satisfy your cravings. As well as chocolates and biscuits, you can now find gelatine-free gummies and crunchy treats such as caramel rice cakes.
If you want a healthier sweet vegan snack, you might want to look for options that opt for naturally occurring sugars instead of the refined stuff. Vegan snacks of course won't be sweetened with honey, so dried fruit and fruit juices have become popular alternatives. Snack bars made with oats and nuts also provide a good source of protein.
A mistake I see many make is to assume that a snack is healthy if it is labelled ‘vegan’- this is certainly not the case!
If a snack is labelled as vegan, it simply means that it was made without any animal products; but it can still contain lots of refined sugars, unhealthy fats, salt, and preservatives. It’s best to look for options made with natural ingredients and the least amount of processing possible.
Whether you want a savoury snack to share with friends or something salty to nibble on the bus home, there's a vegan snack to suit everyone. While many varieties of crisps and crackers are already vegan, some flavourings contain whey and milk powder, so it's important to check the ingredients carefully before buying.
If you're a fan of crisps and corn snacks, you might be interested to try some of the more unusual variations. More than just potatoes, there are vegan crisps made from chickpeas, dried seaweed and root vegetables, each with their own unique texture and taste. Why not pair with houmous next time you're looking for something savoury?
I am a big fan of vegan crisps made from natural ingredients (like hummus and root vegetable) for a reason; they are healthier versions of the classic potato crisp, and they are usually gluten-free.
If you have other dietary requirements aside from the snack being vegan — you'll need to make sure that the snack you choose is suitable. Luckily, many vegan options are also gluten-free, so coeliacs and anyone else avoiding gluten in their diet should be well catered for.
That said, a lot of vegan snacks do contain common allergens such as nuts and soya. This isn't always obvious as some snacks contain soy-derived ingredients or are fried in peanut oil. So, if you or the person you are buying for has food allergies or intolerances, always ensure you check the nutritional information in advance.
If you have any allergies or eat a restricted diet, it’s always best to read the label to ensure your snacks are safe. Luckily, many vegan snacks are made allergen-friendly, including gluten-free, which is very helpful when selecting the best option.
Because snacks, in general, are more processed than other foods, be mindful that many products may have been cross-contaminated during production or have trace amounts of allergens.
Just because a snack is vegan, doesn't necessarily mean it's healthy! While there's nothing wrong with an indulgent treat now and then, it's never a bad idea to check the nutritional information to make sure you don't overdo it on the sugar and salt.
According to NHS guidelines, adults should aim to consume no more than 30g of sugar per day or 19-24g for children, depending on their age. As for salt, the recommended daily allowance is even lower with an upper limit of 6g for adults per day and 2-5g for kids.
Knowing what is in the food you eat is always important, which rings especially true for vegan snacks. When looking at the nutritional label, ensure that the snack you have selected is not over 10g of sugar per serving or 2g of salt.
These markers would indicate that the snack is highly processed and would do more harm than good! Of course, if you stay within your daily limits of 30g of sugar and 5g of salt, then you would be able to have the tasty snack every so often.
If you're looking for something to take with you on the go, it will be more convenient to choose snacks that come in single-serving packs. These can be easily taken with you in your bag or put inside your packed lunch, ready for when you're feeling a bit peckish!
Of course, snacks in single-use wrappers aren't always the most environmentally friendly or economical choice. Share bags aren't just for snacking at home or with others, alternatively you could always decant them into reusable containers to take with you on days out.
Snacks that are packaged to be consumed on the go can be the easier option. It is also helpful to select single-serving snacks to avoid overconsumption of calories, which can be even more helpful if you are on a calorie-controlled diet and seeking to lose weight.
Of course, this is not the most environmentally friendly option, so using reusable plastic containers can be a great alternative.

In at number one, we have an offering from award-winning company Emily, who have been praised for their sustainable ethics and mouthwateringly good vegan snacks. These sea salt sweet potato sticks are made with real veg and all-natural flavours, for a packet filled with small bites of crunchy goodness!
Not only are they planet friendly, but also healthier for your tum than some other savoury snacks. Made from 68% sweet potato, sunflower oil and salt — these snacks have a high fibre content, are gluten, nut and soy-free, and don't contain any palm oil.
If you're on the look out for delicious organic snacks, we recommend Hippeas. Light and fluffy, these puffed chickpea snacks simply melt in the mouth. Not quite sure whether you're in the mood for sweet or savoury? Pick up the Sweet & Smokin flavour for a bit of both.
High in fibre with 14 g of protein per 100g, they're nowhere near as naughty as you'd think. They're also pretty good value for money, especially the share bag. Although, whether or not you actually decide to share them is totally up to you!
Founded by Made in Chelsea's Jamie Laing, Candy Kittens make mouthwateringly good gourmet candy treats that are all 100% vegan! With no palm oil or gelatine, these sweets are made from only the finest ingredients and natural flavours and just feel that bit classier than the usual sweets.
The sour watermelon treats are the ideal size to carry in your bag to work, to a friends house for a movie night or to nibble at home on the sofa. They are also relatively low in calories, so you can go ahead and have one more!
In the mood for chips and dips? These chickpea-based crisps are quite literally made to be eaten with houmous! The tomato and basil flavour provides a real treat for the taste buds, and these crisps feel like a cut above other options out there.
They are a yummy option to accompany a sandwich, or as an afternoon snack. They're also available in other unique and delicious flavours if you prefer to mix it up and try more than one taste. Why not give the sour cream & chive, or chilli & lemon a go?
With a generous slab of dark chocolate on top of a base of oaty goodness, each flapjack not only provides 9 g of protein but is jam-packed with taste, too. With its powerful offering of protein, you might want to take one along in your gym bag for a post-workout snack.
What's more, oats contain a type of water-soluble fibre called beta-glucan that can keep you feeling fuller for longer. Which will really hit the spot between meals, especially if there's still a bit of a wait until dinner!
These strawberry yo-yos provide one of your 5 a day, with no added nasties whatsoever! Gluten and nut-free, they're made entirely from real fruit and veg for a healthier vegan snack.
Kids will love taking these to school in their lunchbox, or as a break time snack. Although, we're sure plenty of grown-ups will enjoy them too. Not a fan of strawberry? They come in a range of different flavours, including sour mango, blackcurrant and apple. Your 5 a day just got a bit more exciting!
Each Jaffa Cake bar contains less than 70 calories, so you can indulge totally guilt-free! This also makes them handy to have on hand if you're looking for an indulgent-tasting sweet snack that can easily fit into a calorie-controlled diet plan.
Popular brand Nakd produce some must-try good-for-you munchies with multiple rave reviews. Nakd only use natural ingredients in their products, with many of their snack bars counting towards your 5-a-day!
Dates, raisins, cashews and peanuts, with a pinch of Cornish salt, are what give this snack its irresistible caramel flavour. However, if you are looking for a low-sugar vegan snack, this might not be the one for you. One bar has 17.7g of sugar which is rather high, but it is all naturally occurring sugar from dried fruit.
These crispy seaweed thins are a perfect choice if you're looking to boost your intake of vitamins and minerals. An ideal healthy snack, they contain beneficial nutrients, such as zinc, iron, B vitamins and iodine which are essential to repair cells and support a healthy metabolism.
Another benefit of these salty and crispy treats is they're incredibly lightweight and come pre-portioned, so you can take them with you on the move. Some might find them to be an acquired taste, but we think they are ridiculously delicious and moreish and definitely worth snacking on!
Well-known by many vegans, Snack a Jacks have been a popular go-to for years! They're cheap, low-calorie and easy to munch on the go, making them a great option to pack for work, school or university.
The sweet caramel flavour means you can enjoy this snack as is, unless you fancy to topping it with some sliced banana. Just be aware that these rice and corn treats may be low in calories but they are pretty high in sugar. This will certainly satisfy your sweet tooth, but you may want to limit how many you eat in one sitting.
