How to Choose Lemon Curd in the UK – Buying Guide

Finding a lemon curd with the perfect balance of sweetness and tang is top of everyone's list, but buying a jar of this delicious spread means considering more than just its taste. This buying guide will show you that information such as the lemon content, the calories and the sugar content are equally as important.

1

Check the Volume, Especially If It's for a Recipe

Check the Volume, Especially If It's for a Recipe

There are few things more annoying or disappointing than realising you haven't got enough of an ingredient for a recipe, especially if you're making, say, a big batch of lemon meringue pies for a party! To avoid this, we recommend double-checking the amount used in the recipe so you know exactly how many jars to buy

For example, while most recipes use one jar of lemon curd (approximately 300 grams) for one lemon meringue pie, some jars come in smaller volumes – in that case, you'll need to buy more to have the right amount of filling.

It's better to have some left over (which you can store in the fridge for later) than to regret not buying enough in the first place. Besides, no one will ever complain of having too much lemon filling in their dessert!

Lemon curds can be pretty versatile in what they are used in, such as lemon meringue pies, lemon curd tarts, and many variations of lemon curd cake! The baking possibilities are extensive, and so it’s always essential to make sure you have enough of the lemon curds on hand.

Make sure that the recipe you have in mind clearly indicates how much is needed, and then ensure the jar you have stocked has enough.

2

The Best Lemon Curds Contain Higher Quantities of Real Lemon

The Best Lemon Curds Contain Higher Quantities of Real Lemon

To give the curd its signature tangy flavour, it's essential to use at least some 'real' lemons in its production. But what is the true percentage of lemons used in this delicious treat?

Lemon juice and lemon oil are used by most manufactures to obtain a lemony flavour, but lemon zest or lemon pulp will give the curd an extra punch. Depending on the recipe, lemon juice or concentrated lemon juice may also be added.

When scanning the label, you'll be able to spot the quantity used as it will be listed as the percentage of lemon. These numbers can vary from 3% of lemon juice to over 20% of lemon juice and pulp, so it's worth checking!

All lemon curds are not created equal when it comes to their natural lemon count in the product. I would recommend reading the nutritional label of the lemon curds and selecting a product that has natural ingredients and a high percentage of real lemons (10% and higher).

3

Lemon Curds Are Typically High in Either Calories or Sugar, So Purchase According to Diet

Due to the ingredients used to make lemon curd, this delicacy is unavoidably high in calories and sugars. We found that even if a product is low in calories, it is high in sugar instead, and vice versa. So, if you have special dietary requirements, it's always best to purchase according to your needs and consume in moderation.

Butter Contributes to the Creamy and Rich Texture, and the Calories Too

Butter Contributes to the Creamy and Rich Texture, and the Calories Too

If you've ever wondered why lemon curd is so incredibly rich, creamy and hard to resist, you can look to two of its main ingredients: butter and whole eggs. These are used to give lemon curd its unique taste and texture, and they also explain why it's so high in calories.

Generally speaking, a lemon curd contains roughly 350 calories for every 100 grams or 55 calories per serving (15 grams).

While it's completely fine to enjoy a serving of this treat, if you're making a dessert that uses a large amount of lemon curd you may want to consider a lower-calorie alternative, especially if you or your guests are health-conscious. Everything in moderation!

Lemon curds are rich for a reason - they contain a large quantity of butter. The butter certainly adds a delicious thick creaminess and makes the curd smooth. Unfortunately, it also massively adds to the calories of lemon curd.

Butter is up to 80% fat, and at nine calories per gram of fat, this quickly adds up to a surplus of calories. You can certainly eat lemon curds in moderation, but I would not recommend eating it for anyone on a calorie-controlled diet and seeking to lose weight.

The 'Sweetness' Doesn't Reflect the Sugar Used in the Curd

The 'Sweetness' Doesn't Reflect the Sugar Used in the Curd

You may be surprised to learn that while lemon curd doesn't have an overly sweet taste in relation to its distinctive tang, it is high in sugar. This is because a large amount of the sweet stuff is needed to balance the citrus flavour.

What's more interesting is that the sweetness doesn't necessarily reflect the sugar content of each curd. For example, you could be consuming over 70 g of sugar per 100 g (over 10 g per serving) and still think it has the perfect sweetness, while another brand with fewer calories and less sugar could taste extremely syrupy to you.

That's why we recommend checking the sugar content, especially if you have a diet or lifestyle which restricts your sugar consumption. For reference, the NHS recommends adults do not exceed 30 grams of sugar per day.

Lemon curds have high sugar content, contributing to the relatively high in calories. Eating a diet high in sugar is detrimental to your health, and I certainly recommend everyone monitor their daily sugar intake to keep it around 30g and below as the NHS suggests.

Consuming too much sugar has a negative impact on your gut health, skin, hormonal balances, and even your waistline. It also greatly reduces energy levels, promotes chronic fatigue, and causes inflammation (linked to certain cancers).

A Traditional Delight With a Gorgeous Fluffy Texture

Made by one of the most well-known preserve and condiment manufacturers in the UK, you probably already know this lemon curd will taste equally as divine as their other products. Once you've opened the jar, it will be gone in no time!

While it already tastes phenomenal, unlike other traditional lemon curds that have a distinctively thick texture, Wilkin & Son's version has an interesting twist – instead of being heavy, it's beautifully fluffy. We think this will go perfectly with freshly baked plain scones.

We have to admit that this came really close to being our second favourite lemon curd. Hailing from Waitrose's 'No.1' range, only the finest quality ingredients are used to make this delicacy and, as a pleasant surprise, it comes at a very reasonable price despite this.

Many shoppers report that this lemon curd tastes even better than the majority of offerings from other famous brands, too. It just proves that top quality doesn't always have to come with a top price. Give it a try, and you'll soon understand why we rate this product so highly.

You'd never know this lemon curd was a supermarket own-brand if you were taking part in a blindfolded tasting session, as the sweetness, tanginess and texture are really on-point. Not to mention the very economical price, which means you can make plenty of desserts without breaking the bank.

This product also tastes as wonderful and delicious as a homemade batch, so much so that anyone would think you've made your lemon meringue pie completely from scratch! This is a great time-saving option for baking that will satisfy everyone's sweet tooth.

Contains 16% Lemon Juice (And That's a Lot!)

Looking for as much of a real lemony kick as possible? This recipe uses as much as 16% lemon juice! You'll also be glad to know that it doesn't contain as much sugar as other products do to balance out the sourness, so you're getting the best of both worlds.

This lemon curd, however, is one of the very few products that uses margarine, which also includes palm oil, instead of pure butter. While this doesn't hugely affect the taste and texture, you might want to be aware of this before purchasing.

You've probably noticed the sophisticated jar of this product before we even have to mention it. That's why we think this could be a perfect gift for any occasion: lovely lemon curd to taste and a stylish, reusable container to keep forever!

One thing we do need to mention, though, is that while this lemon curd has the least lemon content, it also has the highest calories and sugar content per serving. Nevertheless, as a special treat for yourself or a loved one, this is a quality choice.

You'll know who Mrs Bridges was if you grew up watching the '70s TV series Upstairs Downstairs. This lemon curd is made with the same enthusiasm and traditional method that Mrs Bridges used as a cook for an aristocratic Edwardian family; slow boiled and in copper-bottomed open pans.

While this lemon curd has a moderate amount of calories, the sugar content per serving is up to 10 grams. That's why we think this product is for those who don't mind a higher dose of sugar in the name of authenticity
