Most cakes are bought to have either after dinner or for an event such as a birthday party, celebration or congratulations, and are for everyone attending to share. Whether as the main cake or vegan option, you'll want to make sure that there's enough to go around!
Nearly all cakes sold in the UK have the number of servings listed on the packaging which gives you a good idea of how many people will be able to get a slice. Sometimes it may seem like a stretch for a smaller cake to claim to serve 12, but more often than not these numbers are accurate when considering portion size and calorie content.
It can be tempting to think that vegan-friendly foods are both healthy and delicious, but vegan cakes have roughly the same calorie content as their non-vegan alternatives as well as a similar fat and sugar content. While there's no shame in enjoying a delicious chocolate cake in moderation, it's still worth being mindful of how much sugar, fat and overall calories you're consuming.
The recommended daily intake for adults is 2000 calories a day for women and 2500 for men. In terms of sugar consumption, staying under 30 g of sugar a day is a good idea and fats should be kept under 70 g. Having a slice of cake every now and then is totally fine, but you should probably avoid polishing off an entire box of cupcakes in one sitting no matter how enticing it may be!
Lastly, you'll want to make sure that your cake is stored correctly once opened in order to avoid the disappointment of going for a slice and finding it's past its best. While each cake will have its own storage instructions printed on the box, they tend to be shelf-stable rather than chilled. Look for products that are suitable for freezing if you want something longer-lasting or you like to plan ahead.
In terms of an expiration date, vegan chocolate cakes are safe to eat noticeably longer than non-vegan options, thanks to the lack of egg or dairy. Many cakes will happily last well over a week provided they are stored correctly – in an airtight container, usually – but they are much tastier when consumed within a couple of days of being opened.

It may be something of a stereotype, but some vegan cakes can be a little dry when compared to traditional recipes. That is far from the case with the aquafaba-based cakes from OGGS which are incredibly moist and filled with a delicious chocolate fudge frosting.
We're trying to avoid hyperbole, but it's worth saying again that these cakes are incredible and are a must-try for just a few pounds. They're also relatively low in sugar when compared with other vegan chocolate cakes!
Sometimes you can't go wrong with a simple, great-tasting chocolate cake and that's exactly what Just Love has delivered here. It's not only vegan but made with no hydrogenated fat, artificial colours or flavours.
Filled with chocolate frosting and topped with edible gold-dusted chocolate drops, this is one of those cakes where you may find yourself questioning whether it is in fact vegan and non-vegans may not notice the difference at all! As an added bonus, it's also made in a peanut and nut-free factory.
This adorable avocado cake is perfect for both children and fun-loving adults as you'll be hard-pressed to find a vegan who doesn't love an avocado! It's worth noting that there isn't actually avocado present in the recipe, though.
It's also the only choice on our list that's covered in icing which is hard to find when looking for cakes suitable for vegans. While it may not be to everyone's taste, it certainly wins a lot of points for originality.
You may have noticed that, generally, vegan alternatives to non-vegan foods tend to come at a premium, but that's not the case with these affordable little cupcakes from ASDA. Great for parties, they're made with strawberry jam and topped with a vegan marshmallow.
The tops are absolutely covered in chocolate icing too, which makes up about a third of the cake itself, so these are incredibly chocolatey! They may be a little smaller than your usual cupcake, but you won't be disappointed with the taste.
When it comes to simplicity, you may want to opt for some vegan cupcakes. They're easy to pick up and eat on the go without having to worry about cutting slices or having them go stale. Whether as a lunchbox snack or arranged on a plate, these caramel-frosted cupcakes always look great.
If you can stop yourself from finishing them off in one sitting, these cupcakes are also suitable for home freezing, making them a great choice to have handy for future dinner parties or events.
While panettone may not be as popular as Christmas cake or pudding when the festive season rolls around, this traditional Italian cake is perfect with a hot chocolate during the winter months. It's also made by hand from sustainably sourced plant-based ingredients.
This chocolate-studded Veganettone makes a perfect gift as part of a Christmas hamper or as a nice treat for yourself. Not only is it egg-free, but it also contains no palm oil, GMO or trans-fats and is totally organic.
Unfortunately, Terry's Chocolate Oranges aren't vegan which is incredibly disappointing for those who've recently swapped to a vegan diet. Luckily, this Chocolate & Orange Cake from Just Love does a great job of recreating that flavour.
Like some other non-traditional variations, chocolate orange can be something of an acquired taste so may not make the best choice for a group. If you know everyone's a fan of the flavour though, you won't be disappointed.
This raspberry and chocolate cake from Wicked Kitchen is a deliciously rich treat that's not too dissimilar from a Black Forest gateau; think dark chocolate flavours with a sharp berry edge. The cake itself is made from beetroot but you'd never be able to tell from the taste!
As it's more of an adult cake in terms of flavour, this may not be one to choose for a child's birthday bash. If you're looking for a more sophisticated option for a dinner party, however, this cake makes a great choice.
If you're looking for something cheap and cheerful to scratch that chocolate itch, then this offering from BOSH! is a great choice if you're watching the wallet as well as the waistband. It would also be a good option if you have a few vegan guests to cater for at a non-vegan event.
While it claims to serve 8, we think that may be a bit of an overestimation as the cake itself isn't the biggest – meaning that each of the 8 servings will be quite small. At this price point, however, it's hard to complain!
Whether you're looking for something suitable for a child, a co-worker or a family member, this option from Just Love makes a great vegan treat at any birthday party. It takes the number 10 spot as it's only really suitable for birthdays!
Serving 12 people, there won't be any disappointments and, like other Just Love products, it's not just egg and dairy-free but peanut and nut-free as well making it a great choice for those with allergies.
