Natural lashes are perfect for beginners and those that want extra thickness and length than just mascara. If you have sparse lashes, a natural lash will blend in without looking too out of place. This option will also be less overwhelming if it’s your first time applying and wearing them.
Ideal for daily wear, natural lashes will emphasise your eyes without looking too dramatic. When deciding on a lash, place it on your eye without glueing to get a feel for the look. Remember you can trim and customise the length and size to suit your needs, as every eye shape and preference is different.
If you plan to wear false lashes daily, these are likely the best option for you as they provide a more dramatic look than mascara, but aren't too bold for the office. Since they are so lightweight, you'll hardly notice that you're wearing them! This is particularly beneficial as some false lashes can feel a bit overwhelming for newbies, or heavy when worn for longer periods of time.
Full volume lashes are thicker and heavier than natural lashes for a more 'glam' look. They're great for evening drinks, clubbing, or even throughout the day if you're looking for lashes that stand out from the crowd.
Full volume lashes are layered with hairs of different thicknesses and lengths, to give you more intense volume. The greater number of individual strands also makes them more durable, so they are likely to last for up to 2-3 wears. If you have a holiday booked, we'd recommend opting for a full lash, for sure!
Extreme lashes are best for fancy dress parties, birthdays, Halloween, and believe it or not, wedding days. To get that beautifully bold bridal look, many makeup artists opt for an extreme lash to make sure that the bride is centre of attention. These theatrical lashes also show up better in photos and on camera, which is why they are so desirable among influencers and makeup fanatics.
These lashes are known as 3D lashes, different layers and lengths provide a full effect that still looks real. Some will layer on the outer edges to provide a winged eye look, whereas others will be fuller in the centre for a wide-eye effect. Think about your natural shape and how you want your eyes to look when deciding which shape to go for.

False lash strips are the easiest, fastest way to apply your eyelashes whether you're a beginner or pro. These lashes come woven onto a band, so all you need to do is apply glue along the edge and press straight onto the eyelid above your natural lash line.
However, you will need to make sure the length of the band aligns with your lash line. If the band is too long, or if there hasn't been enough glue applied, the lash can detach from the corners of your eye. To prevent drooping lashes, you should cut the band to the right size and ensure you apply plenty of adhesive before wearing.
If you have watery eyes you may find the band lifts up in the inner or outer corners of your eye. To avoid any make-up mishaps throughout wear time, try cutting the false lash in half and apply each end separately rather than one long strip. This means removing the bend in the lash making it more secure to your lash line and less likely to pop up. You can get waterproof lash glues which also may help for longer wear.
Accents are a great option for people who have naturally thick lashes but want to add a bit of flutter to the wing of the eye. They are around 1/2 - 3/4 of the length of a strip so you can place them on the outer tips of the eyelid.
Accents can be used for both natural and full volume looks, and are preferable to strips when applying to hooded eyes and they are also perfect for beginners as they're really easy to apply, giving a flattering look to all eye shapes.
They can really boost that cat-eye look, elongating the appearance of your eyes and drawing attention to the outer corner of your lash. They're easy to apply and you can even use them up to 3 times, providing you clean and store them properly.
Clusters of lashes offer more precision application. They consist of small clusters of around 3-10 lashes to help enhance the appearance of your lash, without having to apply an entire strip. This also provides more freedom as you can decide whether you want to use them to cover the entire lash line, or just as accents.
Just remember that cluster lashes aren't as durable as strips or accents, they are much more delicate and can fall off easily. To make sure that they're fixed into place throughout the whole day, be generous with the amount of adhesive that you apply.
Clusters or individual lashes are popular with brides - this is because if a few fall off throughout a long day from natural wear or watery eyes, it won't ruin the rest of the look. Clusters can be placed along the entire lash line to create a full lash, or just in certain areas where you want to fill in sparse gaps.
To seamless blend your falsies, make sure to give your natural lashes a curl too! Browse our favourite eyelash curlers here.
Glue is the most common method of sticking on your false lashes. The sticky adhesive is applied directly to the band and after waiting a few seconds for the glue to become tacky, you can place the eyelashes with ease. Providing you apply enough high-quality glue, your lashes can stay on all day and night.
Eyelash glue is often made from latex so if you have an allergy lookout for specific 'latex free' lash glue. It's always important to do a patch test 24 hrs before applying a new glue onto the delicate eye, follow the instructions included for full information. Lash glue is available in a variety of shades and applicators, if you're using a dramatic lash, a black lash glue will blend in best with the band, eyeliner or smokey make-up look.
Just be careful if you're in warm weather or on the dance floor as the glue can lose it's strength when exposed to sweat and humidity. If you're worried about your lashes falling off, take a spare tube with you just in case. Often glue will come included with your false lashes, but not always, so make sure to check.
Magnetic lashes are becoming increasingly popular online, with this new approach to eyelash application being tested and approved by makeup influencers across social media platforms and YouTube.
To apply, you simply paint a line of magnetic liquid across your lash line and wait for it to dry before placing your magnetic lashes. The magnets in the lashes are attracted to the liquid, positioning them right where they need to be.
Although this creates less mess than glue, the non-sticky base means they can be pulled off easily. Further, the magnetic liquid appears quite dark on the eyelid, which is fine if you're wearing a dramatic or smokey eye look but may stand out too much against more natural makeup.
For this article, we have chosen to focus on synthetic lashes that are free from any animal or human hair. That said, synthetic lashes can be made from a wide variety of materials, which can look and feel quite different from one another.
As the name suggests, faux mink lashes are designed to mimic mink hair. These lashes have a unique tapered end that creates a soft, feathered look and are generally more flexible and luxurious feeling than other synthetic lashes.
Standard synthetic lashes are more rigid and they don't have as much flexibility, meaning that they can often feel quite noticeable when worn for the first time. However, they are the most affordable option. So, if you're a beginner looking to try out false lashes for the first time, or are only looking to wear them once, you may want to opt for a cheaper pair before splashing cash on expensive ones.

These are by far the most natural-looking lashes on our list and ideal for almost any makeup look. The faux mink lashes layer the fine hairs densely at the centre and more sparsely at the ends to create a fan effect.
It takes just five minutes to apply these strips and as the lashes are so delicate, the magnetic liner is capable of maintaining an unflinchingly strong hold. According to Eyelure, you can get up to 15 uses out of them. Although if you clean and store them carefully, they'll last for far longer.
Inspired by makeup influencer Bryony Blake, these lashes come in small clusters of several strands. With the perfect combination of precision and easy application, you can place the lash clusters wherever you choose without the intricacy of placing each individual lash one by one.
The lashes included come in three different lengths; short, medium and long. This gives you complete freedom, whether you prefer a graduated flare, natural boost or full volume. The choice is yours!
These 3/4 length lashes provide the perfect accent to winged eyeliner, cat-eye looks or even to enhance more natural 'bare-faced' makeup styles. The graduated lashes have a short inner corner that will blend seamlessly with your natural lash.
Also, the long, fluffy outer lashes will elongate and add volume. Eyelure is a popular brand favoured by many makeup lovers across the UK and at such an affordable price, you won't want to miss out on a bargain like this!
Pluck these lashes off the strip one by one and place them on the lash line in the areas that need them the most. Not only do you get to choose exactly where you put them, but the lashes can also withstand heat up to 90 ℃ making them suitable for use with heated curlers.
For the most precise application of all, these are the lashes that you need. These lashes are a good option for anyone who has sparse sections along their lash line that they would like to fill in without using heavy, full volume strips.
Using magnetic technology, these accents are designed to fit comfortably on the outer corner of your lash line. Unsure where to start with magnetic eyelash application? The box is packed full of useful information on how to correctly fit the lashes and secure them on well enough to last the whole day.
Ardell is a popular go-to for false lashes, with a history of excellent customer reviews. Not to mention, the magnetic liner comes in a pot with a small angled brush to ensure a precise application every time.
If you've never heard of Huda Beauty, prepare to be amazed! They are one of the world's fastest-growing beauty brands with their false lashes being some of their most popular sellers online. These lightweight faux mink lashes are styled with splayed hairs in a beautiful arched shape.
Once applied, they look so natural, no one would be able to guess you are wearing false lashes. Best of all, they can be stored in the box between uses, so providing you care for them properly, you can use them as many times as you like!
This multipack set of fake natural-looking lashes is essential for those striving for a discrete look in minutes. They have curved, splayed out hairs to help them blend with your own lashes and give each strip a more natural look.
They're invisible and subtle, so perfect for everyday use. Our only concern is that these lashes are a tad lengthy, so there's a chance that if not trimmed they could irritate the skin. Also, the lashes are not as full as some people might prefer.
These extreme lashes are great for really making your eyeliner pop, whatever the occasion. The Hoodie lash features long, fine lash clusters woven in a unique crisscross pattern and fixed together on one strip for easy application.
With a slight, yet defined curvature they are perfect for adding the finishing touches to a sleek smokey eye look. Unfortunately, there isn't any glue included inside the box, so you'll have to buy your own. That said, at less than £20 for these reusable lashes from a trusted brand, they are worth it!
These handmade lashes are beautifully thick and full. Coming in a pack of four, these false lashes have a deep curve that will tower high above your lash line for a truly dramatic effect.
Best of all, the ends are tapered and spread out to make them appear as natural as possible, despite their obvious lash-enhancing prowess. Just be careful if you're a lash newbie, as these will feel a bit heavy on your lash line. So you might find them a bit uncomfortable in the beginning!
These falsies from Benefit are a great introduction to the world of luscious lashes. With a speedy 2 minute application time, they are easy to use and will last the whole day. They even come in a moulded plastic case, so you can store them safely between wears to keep your lashes protected.
While they are a good starter pair of lashes to help you get used to the feeling of wearing them, they feel a little rigid and don't appear quite as natural-looking as some of the others on our list.
When applied correctly, false eyelash strips sit above the natural lash line and do not interfere with your natural lashes. As a result, they are unlikely to ruin or affect your real lashes in any way.
If you're always on the go or simply don't want to worry too much about makeup, extensions are a great option. With proper care and maintenance, they can be kept on for up to 6 weeks. However, false lashes are easier to apply, and you can easily switch up your look whenever you wish.
False lashes can last anywhere from three to seven days, depending on how well they are cared for. Although, it is not recommended to wear them that long. To be on the safe side, wear your falsies for no longer than 12 hours at a time and remove them as soon as they've done their job.
