You could go all out with a multicoloured face painting kit for clown makeup, or you might like a subtle black lipstick for a cat costume. Or perhaps you prefer scarier looks like witches, vampires, zombies, and skeletons? If so, you'll need some special FX makeup like liquid latex and fake blood, and let's not forget the smoky eyeshadow!
That's why we've put together a simple buying guide to help you get started. If you want to take your Halloween costume to the next level, look for special FX makeup like latex or fake blood to really catch people's attention when you're trick or treating. With a trickle of latex, you can layer up paper tissue and create a realistic cut or scratch, which is great for gory costumes like zombies.
Latex is a gluey, sticky liquid that dries thin and flaky, so you can just peel it off at the end of the night. Fake blood is a Halloween classic and everyone should have at least a small bottle. However, fake blood does usually tend to stain, so if you're wearing white or any precious items of clothing make sure that it doesn't drip or transfer onto them.
If you’re feeling creative and want to make a 3D effect, soft putty can be moulded like playdough and adhered to the skin to create fake wounds or even remove facial features such as eyebrows by covering them. This is a great alternative for those with latex allergies. The design can then be filled in with paints and other accessories for a realistic look.

For Halloween nights spent at clubs, house parties, or even trick or treating, you can use standard beauty products like lipstick or eyeshadow but with a haunted twist. Deep, smoky pigments will bring your look together without having to get into full costume and are great if you need something last minute.
You can pull a simple witch, cat or skull look together, using your make-up as the main feature. If you want to make it more glam, adding glitter can elevate the look whilst covering any mistakes. Following a guide for placing colours, a mummified make-up can quickly be created by blending dark shadows around and under the eye and into the hollows of the cheeks.
Just remember if you use rich colours on the skin that are usually meant for eyes or lips, such as red or black, this may leave a slight stain on the skin. Have a good oil cleanser or cleansing balm ready to break down heavy make-up and bold colours without having to scrub and cause irritation.
Go big or go home with a full face of paint. With a thick paste of colour, you can really get creative with your makeup. You can either go for a high quantity of one colour, like white for a clown face or vampire, or a small quantity of many colours for a children's costume party.
Our tips would be to always add a few drops of water to each colour before you use it, and to make sure that you wash everything away with warm soapy water to get every last bit off.
These paints set quickly to form a creamy coverage, but they can transfer onto clothes if they're not set with a cosmetic powder so bear that in mind! These looks may require a bit more skill and can be harder to create on yourself if you need to close your eyes to apply colour. Pair up with a friend and do each other's looks so you achieve the best result.

Whether you have sensitive skin, oily skin, or you like to shop for natural products only, you should check out the ingredients and properties of your new Halloween makeup. This gives you a chance to see more detail about what you're buying and to look at its key selling points.
For example, some brands will tell you if the products are fast-drying or long-lasting, so you know that you won't have to carry extra with you all night. Or maybe you'd like to know more about the ethics of the product, like whether or not it's cruelty-free or safe for vegans to use.
The most important, however, is whether or not it's suitable for your skin type, or for more easily-irritated children's skin. If you are prone to sensitivities, the safest bet is to go for a product which is labelled as 'suitable for sensitive skin' or 'suitable for all skin types'.

This makeup set goes into the gory details with bright fake blood for bleeding wounds and dark fake blood for scabs. To make your injuries look realistic, take the spatula, and mould the latex into shape. After that, take the porous sponges to dab the blood where it's needed, making it look blotchy and as natural as possible.
The ingredients used in the makeup are all non-toxic and the formulas are suitable for sensitive skin types, so the whole family can use them without worry. For under £30, this box of Halloween dress-up goodies is a bargain that will last you for at least one or two years.
This moody palette, named 'Twighlight and Dusk', is clearly perfect for Halloween. Inside, you've got 8 highly pigmented mattes, 6 pressed pearly shades, 3 chrome toppers, and 1 intense glitter coat.
Each of the shades are waterproof and long-lasting so whatever the weather, you're safe from any smudges. We think that the red and blacks would make a great scary smoky cat-eye, and you're sure to love the effect of the glitter. And, if that doesn't sell it for you, it's completely cruelty-free and vegan!
What's Halloween without a Snazaroo set? This face painting essentials kit has 8 spooky colours – pumpkin orange, zombie green, spider black, ghost white, witch purple, werewolf brown and devil red – as well as a booklet of example looks to try out.
While the colours sound like they'd only suit scary looks, it's actually a great variety pack for children so you can get creative with any style, perhaps a dog or a mermaid. In addition, the set comes with a nifty little brush and a sponge so you can apply your makeup with the right tools for the job.
If you're going to a club night for Halloween, this makeup will turn all heads your way. With 24 shades of fluorescent colours that make your eyes pop, you wouldn't expect this palette to get any better, but it does – it also glows in the dark.
In the palette, you'll see a mixture of both matte and glitter pigments so you can choose just how wild your look will be. But, all will change when you enter a UV lit room, as your makeup will glow a bright neon. You can use this paint on your face, arms, body, and legs, so get creative!
When it comes to face painting, you can't forget about the lips. However, it's better to use a proper lipstick as they're more durable and smudge-proof so you can eat and drink as much as you like. This pack of 6 lipsticks provides bright, highly-pigmented shades of red, black, purple, yellow, white, and green.
These lipsticks really add the finishing touches to your look, and you can even use them on the face, using the pointy tips for additional details – perfect for a sugar skull face paint! They're also simple to take off with regular makeup remover or a facial wipe.
These super-vibrant face paint crayons are a Halloween must-have for young children. Each of the 36 shades are non-toxic and easy to use so all of the kids can get ready without your help!
These pens are for drawing, not colouring, so you'll need to paint the base with a different set of face paints and use this product to help you add the fine details. Overall, this is a great selection of face paints but, if you'd like to buy everything all at once, you might want to take a look at the other face paint sets on our list.
This pitch black lipstick is the go-to for any witch or vampire costume. It's also waterproof and long-lasting so it won't transfer or smudge when you eat your trick or treat goodies. If you'd prefer another colour, there are four other spooky shades to choose from: green, purple, red, and orange.
For rich, luscious lips on Halloween, try this high-impact matte lipstick. You're sure to love the rich quality of the formula and the angled applicator wand too. Though this product alone won't make for an entire look, it's a great buy for those who want to look more classy than clown-like!
Though the most basic, this is also the most impactful product on our list – a thick, creamy tub of white face paint to use as a ghostly white or a base to hold brighter colours. It's made by Snazaroo, so you know that you can trust the reputability of the product, not to mention that it's suitable for sensitive skin and cruelty-free.
Of course, you might want some other colours so it's a shame that there are no additional paints with it. However, for just over £11, you can get 250 ml of quality product that is sure to last you for many Halloweens to come, making it a dress-up box essential.
To start off, here's a quality bottle of liquid latex to help you bring your fake wounds up to a Hollywood standard. You can use it for wrinkly skin, warts, scars, or cuts, but be careful you don't make it look too real!
Our only issue with this product is that there aren't any applicators included so you may find that it's a bit messy unless you buy your own brushes separately. However, with almost 30 ml of latex, this product is a great bargain for the money!
This palette of 20 oil-based face and body paints is perfect if you want an all-in-one painting kit that will work for multiple different looks. It's non-toxic and highly pigmented, so you'll barely need to touch it up throughout the night.
The only drawback is that it's not recommended for people with naturally oily skin, as the creamy texture makes application to oily skin difficult. If you have dry to normal skin, however, this shouldn't be an issue.
If you're in need of a little inspo but aren't sure where to start, why not try out a couple of these looks by Stephanie Toms? You don't need to be a pro MUA to achieve them and they only require a few basic products, but they're sure to impress nonetheless!
