Chai was made to be consumed as a loose leaf tea. That's because dried loose tea leaves generally have a more intense, aromatic flavour, making them much more pleasurable to drink.
However, brewing loose leaf chai will require a tea strainer or infuser and takes a bit more effort and care to prepare than your bog standard tea bag. Loose-leaf teas also tend to be more costly, but if you're lucky enough to have it within your budget, the flavour pay off is definitely worth it.
If you prefer something a little stronger, try our Best Instant Coffees!
If you love tea and value quality, it makes sense to buy the best tea you can - whether that's high quality, sustainable teabags, or loose leaf tea. Chai blends are usually made with a careful blend of tea leaves and spices, so loose leaf chai will have a better quality of flavour through greater quantities of ingredients.
Look at the tea company's sustainability credentials, too. Tea People are great because they are a social enterprise and their loose leaf tea and teabags are the same high quality of tea leaves, herbs and spices.
For yummy chai on a budget, why not try tea bags? They come in great value packs, impart a pretty decent flavour and save both time and effort which can be useful if you like to drink your tea at work.
Tea bags are generally quite far removed from how masala chai is typically served and taste more subtle, or dare we say slightly weaker than loose leaf. However, with the right blend of spices, certain supermarket chai bags still manage to pay a respectful nod to the traditional Indian drink.
There are some great chai teabags available that will give you that distinctive, spicy taste if you want to get a sense of the taste of chai. It's not the same as traditional chai blends but you still get the combination of spices and warmth that you would with more traditional, loose leaf chai.
You can even have it cold as an iced summer drink as an alternative to the warming, hot tea and milk blend. It's all down to personal taste and what's convenient for you!
To save even more preparation time, you could consider picking up a powdered chai. Although the sweet and mild flavour is about as far from the traditional tea as you can possibly get, if you have developed a taste for a chai latte, then powder is your best bet to recreate it.
Unfortunately, these types of powdered hot drinks tend to be packed with extra sugars, which not only affects the overall flavour, but may be detrimental to those looking to cut down on dietary sugars.
For something sweeter, try our Best Hot Chocolate Powders!
Look at the ingredients of your chai and see what suits you. Good chai should just be a blend of earthy black tea leaves with warming spices. You can always sweeten to taste, as the traditional chai method would be to have a milky brew, sweetened with sugar. I personally find the spices, such as cinnamon are enough to sweeten the chai for my tastes.
To really sample the best of what authentic chai is all about, pick a black tea blended with green cardamom pods, cinnamon, ground cloves, ground ginger and black peppercorns.
This flavour combination is as bright and refreshing as it is heart-warming and reassuring. These teas let you enjoy a recipe closest to traditional Indian masala chai, without going rogue and losing the magic.
Cinnamon, cloves, ginger, cardamom and peppercorns are all traditionally used in blending chai and each spice has a number of health benefits to boot; good for circulation, heart health, helping you when trying to fight off colds and flu, and when turmeric is used, it is known as an effective natural remedy for soothing inflammation.
Combined, they are a traditional remedy and have been considered beneficial for health for many years. A good cup of chai is comforting when tired or feeling unwell, especially in the colder weather.
If you decide to experiment and slightly veer away from the classic chai flavours, perhaps you might want to try a more subtle spice. Additions such as vanilla and turmeric add a new element to your tea, while respecting the hot, spicy essence of a traditional chai.
Vanilla chai is sweet and comforting, whereas turmeric chai has the slightest bitterness that (literally) gets the blood pumping. Despite adding different elements, both blend fantastically with the typical base flavours. In addition to its pleasant flavour, turmeric is known for its antioxidant properties and may even help strengthen your immune system.
Vanilla is such a soothing and comforting taste - I love black teas flavoured with vanilla and think vanilla and traditional chai spices make the perfect combination for a rich, comforting drink.
I personally like to add a little dairy-free milk alternative sometimes too - oat milk is a tasty, creamy option if you don't want to go down the traditional milky chai route. This also works well in iced drinks and milkshakes.
Check whether your chai tea contains added liquorice or star anise and if so, decide whether those are flavours you think you might like to try. These are not typical chai ingredients but are included as a base flavour in a number of herbal teas.
These ingredients can make or break your tea, especially if you've got an idea of what kind of flavours and aroma you're expecting, as they both have a strong, noticeable taste that not everyone is keen on.
To keep it plant-based, try our Best Oat Milks!
The aniseed flavour is a personal choice. Teas that contain star anise or liquorice do offer added health benefits, such as lowering blood pressure - you should be mindful of this if you already suffer from low blood pressure and it's not advised for pregnant or nursing women.
The aniseed flavour can be a refreshing kick to a tea, but it's definitely a love-it-or-hate-it taste. I personally don't mind a little aniseed flavour but I am put off when it overpowers other flavours in tea, which it can do at times.

In at number one, Vahdam's loose-leaf Original Chai is a lovely blend of spiced black tea leaves and rich, sense-tingling spices. Plonk a generous scoop of this mouthwatering masala chai into your strainer or tea infuser and watch the magic happen!
Perfect with a dash of plant milk, or dairy if that's your jam, this loose leaf tea best reproduces the authentic chai taste. A little goes a long way, so you could get as many as one hundred servings from this modest 200 g bag. Kettle's on!
For a quick way to enjoy the proper chai flavour, we recommend this multi-pack of Masala Chai Spiced Tea from Palanquin. Each box contains 40 teabags of masala chai, meaning you can stock your store cupboard for weeks to come.
Aside from being close to spot on in terms of authentic flavour, incorporating the most traditional spices used in Indian chai blends — they make it so easy to brew a hot spiced beverage in under 3 minutes!
What we really appreciate about this flavourful masala chai, is the inclusion of black Assam tea leaves. Hailing from the Indian region of the same name, they have a robust flavour and a delightfully delicate aroma you're going to love.
Bay leaves are another intriguing addition, lending a light bitterness to the taste. This exciting chai blend comes packaged in a gorgeous display caddy, perfect for keeping the leaves fresh for your next cup.
This scrummy spice combo of cinnamon, cardamon, turmeric, and ginger, is utterly irresistible as golden milk — simply brew the tea bag with hot milk or your vegan alternative of choice.
As their ingredients list ventures away from the authentic masala chai checklist, these tea bags narrowly missed a top 3 spot. That said, Yogi Tea's Turmeric Chai is so comforting, you may even pick it over a Pimm's on a cool summer's eve!
Sumptuously warming, this tea is made entirely with Soil Association certified organic ingredients. The high quality of the premium, hand-picked leaves produces a superior flavour when compared to the majority of teabags you'll find online.
This product comes as a 3-pack at a great price, offering 60 servings. However, if you're new to Chai and want to try it out, there's a single pack option available for even cheaper!
This box of chai teabags combines many of the traditional chai ingredients, with a few new additions that bring a certain into your cup. A delicate Ayurvedic blend of unique organic flavours, this tea undercuts tangy ginger with sweet cinnamon and it's no surprise to us that it once won a Great Taste Award!
Yogi Teas use a base of liquorice, which is good to keep in mind if you're sensitive to that particular taste. We've chosen to go for a pack of 6 boxes because it works out at excellent value for money, but if you don't want to commit to that extent you can also buy single boxes too.
These Twinings teabags are really popular with online shoppers and we can see why! There are 50 in a pack providing decent value when compared to other similar teas. And, the flavour hasn't been too modified either.
Delicious served black or with a dash of milk, this tea has a pretty simple flavour combination of black tea, ginger, and cinnamon. Together these create a warming, spiced sensation that makes a perfect replacement for a sugar-heavy treat. However, if you're looking for an authentic blend, this might not be your best option!
For a caffeine-free boost of sweetness, brew yourself a cup of this vanilla spiced chai tea blend. What could be easier than adding hot water or steamed milk to one of these warming tea bags? However, if you don't like overly sweet teas, you may fair better with some of our other options.
You can shop for individual boxes on eBay or Waitrose, but if you find you've become a fan of the vanilla blend, Amazon has multipacks of these moreish teas to keep your cupboard well-stocked. Best of all, this is a certified Fairtrade product containing 100% organic ingredients.
Even though this powdered offering isn't exactly traditional chai, we will admit that it's a pretty tasty option for your homemade latte. Mix it thoroughly with hot milk to achieve the coffee-shop concoction you crave, from the comfort of your own kitchen.
Sugar is the number one ingredient, which is great news for anyone with a seriously sweet tooth, though probably not for those looking for a more traditionally flavoured and health-conscious chai.
What we like about these time-saving tea bags, is not only the ease with which they can be brewed into a cuppa, but also the subtle masala chai flavour with a reassuringly spicy twang.
Unfortunately, these are a bit pricier online than in the supermarket. So, they won't be the best value tea bags on our list. However, they are Rainforest Alliance certified, meaning that the tea leaves used are produced under sustainable agricultural standards.
'I personally really like vanilla chai or any black tea flavoured with natural vanilla or cinnamon flavours. I enjoy it all year round, as it also makes a great milk/dairy alternative-based iced drink in the summer and warmer weather, as well as making a very comforting hot drink in the cold weather.'
'I also like to mix and match and make up my own blends with other loose leaf teas and different herbs and spices. Why not try it for yourself?'
Keen to use your new tea bags or loose-leaf chai in a warming recipe? Here's how you can easily create a sumptuous chai latte at home!
The following recipe serves 4. As a dairy-free alternative, we recommend using coconut milk and for an added punch, add the fresh spices to your newly-purchased chai tea.
