When we look for drinks other than water, it is essential to look for healthy ingredients in order to avoid adverse health effects. However it can be hard to know what effects or advantages various ingredients may have on our bodies. Here are some points to take into consideration when looking for a healthy drink.
If you are serious about finding a healthy drink, you should always look at the ingredients list. Some drinks that say they are healthy may have ingredients that are not that good for you, while others may have ingredients with particular health benefits. Compare what each drink contains in order to choose the best drink for your body’s needs.
Sugar can make drinks taste so good, but it has many bad health effects on our bodies. Some of the health risks associated with sugar include acne, weight gain, diabetes, and heart disease. In our modern diets, we ingest sugar in so many kinds of foods and beverages, but you should try to limit your sugar consumption to 30g a day.
Drinks sweetened with sugar especially contain a lot of fructose, a type of sugar that produces more fat than glucose - the sugar found in starchy foods. On top of this, one can drink a lot in a short amount of time, so you should be careful about how much you consume.
If you still want to drink sweet drinks, you can drink those with artificial sweeteners instead. The British Dietetic Association has approved of all sweeteners available in the UK, such as stevia and aspartame, so you can rest assured while drinking artificially sweetened drinks.
High-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) often used to sweeten fizzy drinks is, as the name suggests, high in fructose and has been shown to have an adverse effect on the liver, and may even lead to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
However, lots of fizzy drinks now, especially in the UK and other countries with a so-called 'sugar tax' have reduced the amount of HFCS and replaced it with sweeteners like stevia.
Keep in mind that particular ingredients can have different health benefits, too. For example, ginger can help digestion and the immune system, whereas green veggies like kale are abundant with vitamins and minerals which are great for your body.
Drinks that have a long shelf-life will tend to have more preservatives added. Other additives commonly seen are flavourings and colourings. Naturally coloured and flavoured drinks are likely to have fewer adverse health effects than manufactured ones, although all additives go through strict processes to check they are safe in the amounts used.
However, this doesn't account for multiple products containing the additives being consumed. There may be cumulative effects if you consume these things regularly.
In addition, make sure the coffee or tea drink you choose does not have any added sugar in it, which could decrease the health benefits of the beverage. Black tea and coffee can both cause your teeth to stain, so should be avoided if you treasure your pearly whites.
Consuming one to two cups of tea or coffee during the morning is unlikely to have too much of an effect on sleep, however, traces of caffeine can stay in the body for up to two weeks so if you drink multiple cups all through the day it is easy to see how it can build up.
If your sleep isn’t as good as you’d like, try to avoid caffeinated beverages after lunch otherwise the health benefits of the drinks may be outweighed by the drawbacks of not getting enough sleep.
Likewise, matcha has more caffeine than green tea so should be avoided if you are caffeine sensitive. On the other hand, if you are not fond of the jittery feeling you get when you drink coffee, you may want to try green tea instead; the caffeine inside green tea is said to make you feel more calm, focused, and alert.
The antioxidants in tea are anti-inflammatory and this is why they are protective against cancer, heart disease and other inflammatory conditions.
Additionally, some of the rituals around tea drinking in some cultures can induce a sense of calm which is also anti-inflammatory as it can reduce stress hormones in the body. So when you are having your cuppa, take a moment to appreciate the moment and add a bit of stress-relief to your day!
Drinking milk is a great way to maintain healthy bones thanks to the calcium and vitamin D that it contains. To avoid consuming too much fat you should choose low-fat milk when possible; however, even low-fat milk has a high amount of calories so you should avoid drinking too much.
If you want to avoid drinking cow’s milk for your health or other reasons, soy milk is a good alternative as it also provides you with calcium and protein. Other options, such as almond milk, coconut milk, and oat milk, do not replace the calcium and protein in cow’s milk but are still healthy alternatives if you are getting enough calcium in your diet already.
We need a significant amount of calcium in our diets every day - around 800mg. A third of this can be provided by 200ml of cow's milk. If you are choosing a dairy-free option, look for one that is fortified with calcium. Most will say if they are on the front of the carton, but check the ingredients list on the back if not.
Smoothies have higher amounts of nutrients than juices but have more calories, so should not be consumed too regularly. So, juices and smoothies are good once and a while to get a quick boost of nutrients, but do not compare to eating the actual fruits and vegetables.
Smoothies do still contain the fibre from the fruit and vegetables which is a better option than juices as they tend to have a lower glycaemic index so don’t spike blood sugar as much. The fibre is also good for the bacteria that lives in your gut.
Fruit juices still do contain good vitamins and minerals though, but stick to around 150ml at a time. Diluting juice with water or fizzy water makes for a refreshing drink that will increase your fluid intake without too much sugar.
In addition, because kombucha is made from tea, it contains the same antioxidants which fight free radicals, preventing cell damage. It also contains many vitamins which can boost your immunity.
Do look for the sugar content of kombucha though as some can be very high, partly because the fermentation requires sugar, but also because the taste can be slightly sour, it can also be added at the end to make it more palatable.
Drinking it alongside meals rather than drinking it by itself can reduce the likelihood of it spiking your blood sugar and also reduce the impact of the sugar on teeth, as saliva production when eating helps to return the mouth to its usual pH.
In addition, it contains more potassium than bananas, so is great at preventing cramps. While it has a mild sweet taste, it has significantly less sugar than juices or fizzy drinks.
Choose the unsweetened versions if possible so you get all the benefits without the negatives of too much sugar. It naturally contains some fibre, so consider using it instead of water in your smoothies, you will get a big fibre hit and your smoothie will have a delicious flavour as well as being really nutritious!
