Sugar alcohols like maltitol, xylitol, erythritol, isomalt and sorbitol appear naturally in food and are kinder to teeth than table sugar as they don't cause tooth decay. Xylitol, in particular, may even help prevent tooth decay and reduce infection and is often used in oral health products like toothpaste. It has about a third of the calorie content of sugar.
Steviol glycoside, derived from the stevia plant, has become extremely popular as a 'natural' alternative to traditional sweeteners. As well as having zero calories, it has even been thought to help treat high blood pressure and decrease blood sugar for people with type 2 diabetes.
Many people prefer these sweeteners because they are not chemically derived and can have less of a noticeably artificial taste. However, seeing as all of them have to be highly processed before they can be added to sweet snacks and diet drinks anyway, they are still considered artificial sweeteners.

Traditional chemically-derived sweeteners like acesulfame K, aspartame and sucralose have had a bit of a bad reputation over the years. Nowadays, many people would prefer to consume something slightly more natural.
But it is important to remember that all sweeteners in our food and drinks must be approved by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), who have deemed all of these perfectly safe for daily consumption. Plus, they are entirely calorie-free, which is helpful if you're trying to lose weight or cut down on your sugar intake.
Calories tell you how much energy an item of food has, and you need to consume the correct amount to help maintain a healthy body weight (called your maintenance intake). When you consume more calories than your body burns through daily movement, you will inevitably gain weight.
Sugar-free sweets generally have fewer calories than their sugary counterparts, tending to range between 200 and 300 kcal per 100 grams. That means you can snack on a few without worrying too much about going over the general daily calorie recommendation (which is 2500 for men and 2000 for women).
However, they aren't all completely saintly and should still be enjoyed in moderation, so it's always worth checking the content and matching it to your personal dietary needs. Another thing to note is that some of the sweeteners used in sugar-free sweets can have a laxative effect if you eat lots in one go!
Do you have food allergies, intolerances or sensitivities? Eating sweets is fun and definitely shouldn't end with a trip to the hospital, which is why it's essential to check the packaging and product description for allergens listed in bold.
Happily, as well as sugar, many of these sweets are also free from ingredients that may cause a bad reaction, like gluten, lactose and nuts. However, this isn't always the case as some sweets contain milk, soya, or are packaged in a facility that uses nuts and wheat. You should also check whether the sweets contain gelatine or carmine colouring (made from crushed insects) if you are vegetarian or vegan.

Why are these sweets the best? They recently won the coveted Great Taste award, so you know they're high-quality and delicious! Coming in a unique and refreshing lemon-mint flavour, they are sweetened with stevia and contain a blend of 13 herbs.
These vegan-friendly sugar-free alternatives will also contribute to your daily vitamin intake as they contain vitamin C. They come in a fairly compact packet, so they're ideal for snacking on the go. Just keep them in your pocket or bag and pop one in your mouth when you feel the need for something sweet!
Did you love the old Campino sweets? Unfortunately, they were discontinued in the UK in the early 2000s because of excessive E numbers. Not to worry, because these Vivil caramel and cream sweets are very similar, only they're sugar-free and much healthier.
They're great value for money, too, as they come in a reasonably large pack size for their price. You also have the option to buy them in bulk, which is ideal if you eat sweets often and want to stock up. We wouldn't blame you!
Who doesn't love Werther's Originals? With this sugar-free variety, you can enjoy your favourite treats without the crash. Even if you haven't tried them before, they make a nice change from the usual fruit-flavoured sweets and have a delicious buttery caramel flavour that will appeal to anyone who likes rich tastes.
These sweets are available from most supermarkets, too, so you'll be able to purchase them with your weekly online food shop for convenience. They can also be enjoyed by vegetarians as the recipe does not contain gelatine.
These fruit lollies are not only sugar-free but have actually been made to be good for your teeth. They contain a healthy amount of xylitol, erythritol and stevia, which are all great for improving your smile.
The delicious mix, including cherry, raspberry and orange, are all sweetened, coloured and flavoured naturally and are kosher and free from common allergens, so they're a sweet everyone can enjoy.
These sweets have a lovely soft texture, making them pleasant to chew for everyone, especially those who have loose teeth or crowns. The gummy sweets are also shaped like their fruit flavour, so it's easy to tell them apart if you're buying for a picky eater!
The colours and flavours of the sweets are natural for an authentic taste. As they are made with maltitol, they also have a relatively low-calorie content – 30% less than their sugar-containing counterparts.
These sweets come in a practical flip-top box, making them great for stashing in a bag if you want a snack on the go. Plus, the box is cardboard, so it's a much better choice if you're trying not to buy too much plastic.
As well as being a delicious treat for anyone who loves liquorice, these sweets can also be used as a sweetener for drinks. They're pretty affordable, too, considering you get 14 boxes of sweets for the price. However, liquorice is a bit like marmite - you either love it or hate it!
Chupa Chups are one of the most popular lollipop brands of all time, but they can be expensive to buy individually. Enter this bundle of 120 sugar-free lollies, arranged on a visually pleasing stand that would be an excellent centrepiece for a party!
As they come individually wrapped, they're also a good buy for anyone dieting. One thing to note is that the stand doesn't always contain equal amounts of the different flavours, which could be a problem if there's a specific one you like best.
Gummy bears aren't just for kids. These stylish sweets put a unique twist on traditional gummy bears with grapefruit and pineapple flavours more suited to grown-up palates. This is an excellent pick for vegans as all the ingredients are plant-based, plus no artificial colours or flavourings are used.
These sweets are packaged in a large bag but only contain 40 grams, which could leave you feeling deceived if you didn't read the weight and expected more for your money. However, they do have a low fat and salt content, making them healthier than other alternatives.
Looking for some more healthy snacks for adults?
These sweets are ideal for a film night or car ride snacking as they come in a resealable bag. You can also buy them in bulk as 14 individual packs, which is ideal for large families or just for keeping the cupboards stocked up with sugar-free treats.
Again, there is a bit of a texture issue, as these sweets stick together easily, and it can be difficult to pry them apart to eat. However, these sugar-free alternatives taste just like regular Fruit-Tella sweets, so you'll enjoy eating them nonetheless!
These sweets are GMO-free, meaning they don't contain genetically modified crops. They're also free from dairy and other animal products, so they're suitable for vegetarians, vegans and anyone with a milk allergy.
These sweets don't have the best texture as they are very sticky and will get stuck to your teeth afterwards. You may have to give your teeth an extra brush, but it might be worth it for their great-tasting nostalgic cola bottle flavour!
Opting for sugar-free sweets will undoubtedly be better for your oral hygiene, but you should also check for artificial preservatives or colours too as these can also be damaging.
Yes, and no. Not all sugar-free sweets produce laxative effects, but it depends on the ingredients used. For instance, sorbitol, lactitol and xylitol in large amounts might give you diarrhoea. These are sugar alcohols that act like concentrated fructose which is difficult for your stomach to digest in large quantities.
