How to Choose Roller Blades in the UK - Buying Guide

To make sure you can wear your roller blades for the multiple hours you might want to, you need to get a pair that are supportive, comfortable and fit well. You also want to ensure the mechanics of your blades provide you with the smoothest ride possible. Don't worry, in this guide, we're here to show you exactly what to look for!

1

Select the Right Size for a Comfortable Ride

Select the Right Size for a Comfortable Ride

Picking out the right size roller blades for you is thankfully not too complicated. The sizes are generally the same as standard UK shoe sizing, so you should just be able to choose the size that matches the one you normally wear. It is worth always checking, though, as some US brands will use different sizing.

In some cases, one pair of roller blades can be adjusted to cover a wide range of sizes. These are a good choice if you often find it hard to get your exact size, which is especially important if you pick a pair of roller blades that have a hard plastic exterior, as they won't have the stretch or give you'd find in regular shoes.

2

Bearings Play a Big Part in Creating a Smooth Ride

Bearings Play a Big Part in Creating a Smooth Ride

While you don't need to become an expert on the mechanics of roller blades to buy a pair, it's good to know a bit before purchasing. The bearings in roller blades have a role to play in the precision of your skating, and there's a useful scale you can consult to help you better understand what you're buying.

Bearings are generally classified using the ABEC rating system. The higher this number is, the tighter the tolerance of the bearing. for example, an ABEC 3 or 5 bearing is fine for beginners.

If you want something a bit more precise, look for a grading of ABEC 7 or higher. These will offer the smoothest skate and will be necessary once you've got the basic skills down.

3

Safety and Comfort Go Hand in Hand

Making sure that your blades are comfy will help to improve their overall safety. This is because having your feet secured in place and being able to stop when you want to, are both important for a confident and stable ride.

Strap in for a Comfortable Ride

Strap in for a Comfortable Ride

For your blades to offer the right amount of support and comfort, they need to be secured in place while they're on. This is done using fastenings. You'll see a few different methods, often all on the same pair of roller blades.

There are usually one or two lock straps on each inline skate. These are made from solid plastic, so not only will they keep your feet and ankles in place, they also have a role to play in the whole structure of the blade boot. You might also find velcro strap, which offers less support than a lock strap, but can be good for subtle size adjustments.

There's also a chance you'll find laces, either as the only fastening method or in conjunction with a lock strap. Laces let you change the tightness around the foot and, as with velcro straps, will allow for more tailored fit that can make your inline skates more comfortable as a result.

Put on the Brakes When You Need to

Put on the Brakes When You Need to

A brake can be found at the back of your roller blade, behind the wheels. This comes in the form of a rubber stopper that, when dragged along the ground, will slow you down. Just be aware that the rubber needs to be hard-wearing, so as not to rub away after stopping a few times on gravel or other rough surfaces.

However, lots of roller blades for adults don't have a brake, which means you'll will have to use your skills and technique to stop yourself. It's true that using a stopper brake does involve some skill too, but if you are new to roller blading, you may feel more comfortable having one.

An All-Round Roller Blade for Novices and Beyond

These roller blades are ideal for both experienced roller bladers and those completely new to the sport. They have a low centre of gravity, so you can work on your balance, and the wheels will allow you to move at a moderate speed with minimal effort.

Although these blades say they're for men, the wide range of sizes and adjustability means they'll fit a variety of feet. Best of all, they have a secure closure system, supremely comfortable liner and a shock-absorbing composite frame - all of which come together to make blades that will leave you feeling unstoppable!

Shock-Absorbing Soles Give 360° Protection

All-round protection is what you can expect to get from these roller blades. The aluminium frame keeps your feet in place and the shock-absorbing rubber insole prevents you from feeling every bump along the road, giving you heels a break.

In addition to this, they are secured via responsive straps. These are able to adapt to your movements, providing a degree of flexibility, while still offering superior support.

Roller Blades That Can Cope With Anything You Throw at Them

Whatever the weather and what ever the surface, you'll be able to hit the streets with these roller blades. The wheels have additional PU protection to make them ultra wear-resistant so they will last and last. They are also very quiet and have shock absorption qualities, so you can skate calmly and smoothly.

The bearings on these are incredibly high, easily one of the highest on this list, which is why these are a great option if you've been roller blading for a while. They can also cope with the sweat you'll build up from going a bit faster thanks to the breathable mesh surface that lies underneath the protective exterior.

Avoid Injuries With These Supportive Blades

With protective casing on the outside and plenty of cushioning on inside, these roller blades will do their best to deflect any impact to prevent injuries. There is also a significant amount of padding on the tongue, which will ensure your shins are more comfortable when pushing forward.

The glide of these blades is smooth thanks to the ABEC-7 bearings, and the PP fibre material used in the construction of the boot assists in strengthening what is already comprehensive foot support. As a bonus, the price tag on these is relatively low!

Breathable Blades for Active Inline Skaters

If you're looking for a sportier skate, it's a good idea to choose blades that let your feet breathe. With these roller blades, the boot is made using a softer fabric that allows air to circulate. Fortunately, no support has been sacrificed thanks to the clever reinforced aluminium frame.

The high-quality ABEC-7 chrome steel bearings will give you a precise skate, allowing you to feel fully in control. You are also able to fully tailor these blades to your feet via the combination of straps and lace-up fastenings used.

Supportive Cushioning Keeps Your Feet in Place

The compression provided by the cushioning inside this pair of grown-up blades prevents any twisting or sliding inside the boot. Aided by the two lock straps on the exterior, your ankle and foot will be kept firmly in place.

If you do fall over during the ride, you can rest assured that you'll be protected by the shock-absorbent structure of the boots. Unfortunately, we don't know much more about the bearings other than the fact that they are 'precision', which might put some people off purchasing.

Find Your Feet With These Entry-Level Skates

If you're new to the world of roller blading, then these skates are a good way to go. The sizes run a bit bigger than many other adult skates, and they're adjustable, so those who wear a larger shoe size can enjoy rolling around on these too.

We like that their lower centre of gravity increases stability, allowing you to feel more sure on your wheels, right from the start. The only reason these aren't a bit higher is their slightly larger wheels mean you'll need to put a bit more power behind each push to get them rolling.

Durable Blades That Don't Sacrifice Comfort

These blades are designed to replicate the sensation of ice skating. Their hard plastic casing is what makes these blades durable, and provides a good level of support for beginners. Plus, the sizes are adjustable so you can play around until you find what feels just right.

Thankfully, style hasn't be ignored for the sake of practicality, and the plain black outer casing is made all the more interesting with a monochromatic graphic running along the top. It's unclear what bearings these roller blades have, so if you are a bit more experienced, you might want to look for a different pair.

The urethane wheels will give enough grip for both indoor and outdoor roller blading, so you can comfortably ride wherever where you want to go. The fit of this pair of adjustable blades can also be changed at the push of a button, which is convenient as they only come in one size.

Don't Let a Lack of Ice Stop Your Hockey

These roller blades are designed to be used for roller hockey, which similar to ice hockey, but on dry land. As such, the plastic boot provides rigid support and protection around the foot, with laces that allow you to tighten them just the right amount.

Their wider appeal may be more limited than other pairs on this list, but they are great for this particular sporting pursuit. There's even a microfibre lining and padding around the ankle, although the range of sizes is limited.

Summary

We wholeheartedly believe that anyone can get into roller blading at any age. While there may be some falls along the way, with the right roller blades on your feet, you're going to feel confident enough to get back up. Roller blading is great for so many things - your balance, your fitness and your mood to name just a few - so unleash your inner child and have fun skating around!
