Think about how much pudding you're going to need in order not to leave any guest wanting. For small families or groups, a traditional 454g pudding will be just right. If you have a member of the party who would rather stick to the mince pies, a slightly smaller pudding weighing 400g could also be sufficient.
You might want to consider purchasing individual puddings weighing around 120g each. These mini puddings will also work if there is just one or two of you celebrating. Some mini puddings also come as a two-pack which is ideal. For bigger groups, look out for a hefty 800g or even 900g pudding. Not only will these XL puddings ensure your entire party are well-fed, but they make a wonderful centrepiece for your spread.
For a properly mouth-watering flavour, try a pudding which has been matured. Christmas puddings get better with age, so the longer the better! Of course, all puddings taste delicious thanks to the brilliant, bold ingredients such as ripe vine fruits (think raisins and sultanas) and rich alcohol, typically sherry and cider, although sometimes cognac or brandy.
The benefit of a long period of maturation is simply that it gives the booze and juices a chance to fully permeate the sponge and fruits, resulting in that old-fashioned richness that only a Christmas pudding can. Some have been matured for 6 or 9 months, others as many as twelve, we really believe the difference is noticeable.
It's all too easy to over-indulge at Christmas, which is why we recommend checking the amount of saturated fat and sugar in the Christmas pudding you're buying, and doing your best to carefully savour just one tasty portion. According to the NHS, women should not eat more than 20g of saturated fat per day, while men should stop at 30g.
A 100g portion containing 3.5g or less is a fairly sensible choice, whereas a100g serving with 4g or more should be considered more as a treat. That said, if you can't treat yourself at Christmas, when can you!? With those figures in mind, we also suggest checking sugar content and indulge accordingly, just to be on the safe side. If you are loading up on pudding, maybe save the mince pies for another day.

While it may be lacking in sugar, it definitely isn't lacking in taste, with the fragrant spices of nutmeg and cinnamon alongside sultanas, raisins, prunes and dates there are enough natural sugars to pack a punch. The warming hint of brandy really finishes things off. This is a smaller sized pudding, under 400g so be aware, it won't suit a large family gathering.
