How to Choose a Free Fitness App in the UK - Buying Guide

Before you download your new pocket fitness trainer, you should know a few things about the apps that are available to you. There is a huge selection to choose from, and the best one will depend entirely on your preferences and needs. We're here to walk you through the basics.

1

Consider the Type of Training That You Most Enjoy

To make sure you get the most out of your fitness app, consider which types of workouts you want to practice. Perhaps you like to run, or would like to start, or maybe you want some extra help at the gym. Either way, you can choose an app that's tailored specifically to your activity of choice, which we'll discuss below.

Strength and Toning Can Be Done in the Gym or at Home

Strength and Toning Can Be Done in the Gym or at Home

Gym workouts are all the rage, and it's hard not to become addicted to their fast-paced environment. If you're into strength training or prefer to use workout equipment and machines, you can find various fitness apps designed to help you train at the gym

However, when you're too busy with work and the idea of going to the gym seems almost impossible to fit into your schedule, home workouts make the perfect substitute for staying strong without taking up travel time.

Although it can be tempting, you don't always need a ton of workout equipment so try to remember this. We've found some great apps for everyone, even if the only fitness gear you have is a pair of trainers.

Running Is Accessible and Improves Your Cardiovascular System

Running Is Accessible and Improves Your Cardiovascular System

Running is excellent for cardio lovers and can strengthen your heart, increase your lung capacity, and reduce your blood pressure – not to mention the fact that it can help you lose fat if that's your goal. It's very beginner-friendly too, as you can set your own pace.

You can find fitness apps that help you train harder and motivate you to reach your goals. From voice coaching to virtual cheerleaders and pedometers to mile trackers, you can have everything you need right in your pocket.

Pilates and Yoga Are Low Impact Exercises for the Body and Mind

Pilates and Yoga Are Low Impact Exercises for the Body and Mind

Pilates can train your core and leg muscles and improve your centre of balance and posture. The workouts are usually low-intensity and consisting of slow, precise movements while controlling your muscles and breathing patterns.

Yoga is slightly more focused on finding flexibility and comfort whilst taking some time to yourself to slow down and relax your mind. While training with yoga, you'll learn how to stretch your muscles and flex your posture, so it's a more gentle way to strengthen and tone.

HIIT Workouts Get You Moving in Shorter Sessions

HIIT Workouts Get You Moving in Shorter Sessions

HIIT, which stands for high-intensity interval training, generally consists of a series of exercises designed to get your heart rate up and your blood pumping to the max. This type of workout helps you lose weight and build muscle strength in much less time than traditional cardio, so it's great for busy people.

With a HIIT app, you can use the timer to break up short bursts of exercises to help keep you on track, which is much better than doing it manually. Also, HIIT apps have lots of fun circuits that you can try out where the intensity increases as you progress, and most are bodyweight only.

Check What's Included for Free – Some Apps Can Be Upgraded By Subscription

Check What's Included for Free – Some Apps Can Be Upgraded By Subscription

You can download many fitness apps for absolutely nothing, but some require a subscription to unlock the best features. For example, apps like Nike Run Club are entirely free, whereas apps like Shreddy could cost you a little extra after you've had a look around after a trial period.

Don't be put off by the prices, though, as they're usually fairly cheap and can be paid weekly, monthly, or annually. You can always decide further down the line if you find yourself using the free version a lot! We do, however, recommend that you read the fine print and check the duration of your free trial and whether or not it'll be automatically renewed if you don't cancel.

3

Meal Plans Help You Stay on Track

Meal Plans Help You Stay on Track

In addition to keeping you fit, some apps can also teach you to become healthier with your eating habits. By providing you with a selection of meal plans and even shopping lists, they can be your new coach on the tracks and in the kitchen. Plus, you can tailor them to your own needs and dietary preferences. It doesn't matter if you're a meat-eater or a vegan - you can decide what you eat and when.

Plans usually include 3-5 meals and snacks per day, and there are charts to keep track of calories and nutrition, which is handy whether you're losing weight or trying to bulk up.

If You Have a Smartwatch, Look for Apps That Allow Connectivity

If You Have a Smartwatch, Look for Apps That Allow Connectivity

To save you from carrying your phone with you while you work out, nowadays, you can also find smartwatch compatible fitness apps, which will help you track your workouts efficiently without taking up pocket space or risking damage.

You'll also be able to monitor your steps, speed, heart rate and distance, so it's an excellent tool to take with you when you're running. If you do have an Apple Watch or similar, look out for this feature when browsing the app's description, and be sure to check out those we've found on our list that do!

Progress Your Weight Lifting and Build Your Own Routines

Hit your goals and track your workout progress with this fitness logger by Under Armour. The programme works very well for weightlifters, but you can also use it to track runs and other workouts too.

With this app, you're given the tools to build your own routine from over 800 exercises, as well as record your reps, sets, and rests, and get an inside look at your calorie intake and burn ratio. One of the coolest features is that you can connect it to your smartwatch and even a selection of Under Armour's trainers.

No.3

Kayla Itsines Fitness
SWEAT

Join Millions of Women on This Fitness Challenge

Work out like a pro in your own home with Insta-famous Kayla Itsines' elite female-run workout programme. SWEAT hosts programmes with different intensities, so you can choose the style of workout you do, whether that's in your living room or the weight room.

The BBG programme is aimed to motivate you to become more active, plus there are HIIT, lifting, muscle-building, and even post-pregnancy programmes. On top of this, the nutrition guide can be adapted to your dietary needs, and you can track your progress with the easy-to-use interface.

No.4

Urbanite Inc.
8fit Workouts & Meal Planner

Eat Well, Train Well, Live Well

8fit's highly-rated app will measure your fitness level and record your progress, helping you reach your goals. The HIIT, fat-burning and yoga workouts are around 15-25 minutes and can be done at home without any specialist gear. Nutrition tips and interactive videos are included too!

Not only does this app train you, but it also teaches you the science behind fitness and healthy eating, providing you with a balanced shopping list to create tasty meals. The app has a variety of free workouts, but the subscription costs £20.55 every three months. We think it's well worth it, though!

The Fat Burning App That Helps You Hit Targets

Get your heart pumping and burn fat alongside 7M's voice and video coaching, which allows you to replace those long cardio workouts with short, high-intensity workouts that scorch just as many calories, all for free.

This app is a good option for both beginners and pros, and it comes with a calendar and weight tracker to make sure you stay on track. The HIIT timer helps you keep track of your reps and rests, so you don't have to worry about resetting your timer after each exercise, which is a smart addition.

Train up With Adidas in Short, Effective Sessions

Kickstart your strength training and boost your energy with short bodyweight or equipment workouts using 180+ HD workout videos. Whether you want to lose weight, bulk up or become fitter, you can complete 2, 3, 4 or 5 sessions a week with personalised training.

There's a wide range of exercises to choose from and various plans that can be adapted to your body type, fitness level, and availability, and the app is compatible with smartwatches, too. The best bit? You don't need a lot of time as the workouts can fit into even the busiest daily schedule.

No.7

Labmobil
Lotus | Yoga and Meditation

Nama-Stay At Home

Bring the yoga class to you with six teachers and a range of yoga sessions, all using your smartphone. This app is available in dozens of languages, from Spanish, French and German to Japanese, Turkish and Russian. Plus, you can connect to your Apple Music and Spotify playlists to channel your musical zen and really get immersed.

Better yet, you can even use the classes offline if you want to practice in the park, in your garden, or when you're travelling without an internet connection. We did think that the price was a little steep considering the minimal variety in training, though.

It's Time to Get Shreddy for Summer

This goal-based app helps you train both your muscles and your mindset. You can expect killer workouts and balanced meal plans to help you reach your targets, with three gym workout guides and a huge range of home workouts to choose from.

Not to mention, you can also tune in to the real-time workouts or even build your own with the list of exercises and tutorials. The meal plan is mostly vegan, but it's high in protein, and you can easily add meaty ingredients if you like. Unfortunately, while this app is free to download, you have to pay to start the programme.

No.9

Timeshift Media, Inc
Pilates Anytime

Strengthen That Core With 3,400 Pilates Classes

This app offers over 3,400 streamable and downloadable pilates classes led by 180 industry experts that give you guided instructions and online workshops. The experience can be customised to your preferences, whether it's the duration or intensity of the workout, or to suit a disability.

The app offers a seven-day trial, and after that, you're expected to continue with the subscription. If you're a beginner and you don't have any equipment, that's okay, but a lot of the workouts do require things like pilates blocks and a mat.

No.10

FITNESS22 LTD
5K Runner: Couch to 5K Trainer

The Running Programme You've Been Waiting For

Whether you don't run frequently or you're a pro on the tracks, you'll love this app. 4.2 million people have joined the community to get in shape and drop a few pounds. The 8-week programme is tailored to you, and the intensity will gradually increase, plus no fancy equipment is needed, just a pair of trainers and a little motivation.

Our favourite feature is the human voice coach that motivates you whilst you run or walk, and you can even play music in the background. The only downside is that whilst it's free to download and has a free trial, you'll have to pay a fairly pricey subscription to continue.

Try Out a Sample HIIT Workout - No Equipment Required!

Fancy sampling some content from one of our top apps before you download? Try out this at-home HIIT workout for beginners by 8fit, which you can do anywhere, any time.

This particular workout lasts 10 minutes and doesn't require any equipment, making it perfect for beginners. It includes 3 repetitions of a few simple HIIT exercises, including arm pulses, squats, and planks. Give it a go and see what you think!

Summary

It's so important that you have a fitness program that's tailored specifically to your own needs to keep you motivated, and whether you're a runner or a home workout fanatic, we hope that you've now found yours. Remember, always choose an app that best suits your preferences, and don't forget to check the subscription!
