Retinol, a derivative of vitamin A, is a magical ingredient that not only speeds up cell renewal, but also boosts the production of collagen. It is often found in anti-ageing skincare as it is highly beneficial when treating a variety of skin problems that naturally appear as we age.
The reason it is so well loved in the skincare world is due to the fact that it helps to improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, sun damage and even dark spots, helping to heal existing damage and prevent further ones.

Plant acids such as alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) and beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs) are known as chemical exfoliants, and can gently slough off the dull outer layers of damaged skin to reveal fresher, newer skin underneath.
These natural ingredients include ascorbic acid (vitamin C), glycolic, and salicylic acid which can also help in removing age spots and evening out skin tone. If you have acne-prone skin, ingredients salicylic acid given its comedolytic and keratolytic properties as the gentle exfoliation action helps keep pores unblocked.
Inflammatory conditions in the skin are one of the leading causes of skin ageing. Ingredients such as vitamin E, also known as tocopherol acetate, can help calm your skin and reduce redness and inflammation. Vitamin E in particular can also help protect your skin from pollution and UV damage, making it a valuable addition to any anti-ageing serum.
Hyaluronic acid is one of the best-known super-moisturising ingredients found in skincare for all ages, but especially products for mature skin due to to its plumping effect, and the fact that skin tends to become drier as we age. It can also absorb up to 1000 times its own weight in water, which means that it can lock down moisture in your skin, leaving it smoother and better hydrated!
There are a number of anti-ageing serums specifically formulated for sensitive skin, and these will generally be fragrance-free and or hypoallergenic formulations. It is best to check the description before you buy if this is something that matters to you. You can also consider leaving out common chemical additives such as SLS (sodium lauryl sulphate) and parabens if you've noticed a reaction to these before.
Another ingredient that you may wish to avoid is retinol. In principle, all people can tolerate retinol given its relatively low irritating potential compared to other retinoids. However, some people do suffer from redness, dryness, itchiness, and flaking after they use it for the first time. If this happens, try spacing out the application, using the product every third night for the first two weeks.
If the skin does not get irritated after this period, you can increase to every other night for another two weeks until the skin does not get red and flaky anymore. Once this happens, it's safe to apply retinol every night. Additionally, vitamin C can also prove to be a problem at high doses for some people, so this may be one to opt-out of as well - or to be used in low doses.
Milk cleansers are great for cleansing sensitive skin types without worry of any irritation. Learn more about milk cleansers here!
Thicker formulations tend to be favoured by those with thirstier complexions and are usually sold in tubes or, more commonly, pump bottles. These products can be smoothed on to the skin and are likely to have a gloriously rich consistency that hydrates and plumps up your skin.
While jars and tubes may lead to a little more product wastage, they are easy to use and obtain product from. Pump bottles have the added benefit of being able to control the amount of product dispensed, so are an even better choice.
Dropper or pipette bottles hold the lighter serums that are most suitable for those with oily or sensitive skin. The dropper allows you to control the amount of serum dispensed and a little goes a long way, so there is little wastage with these products. This also makes them a good pick for those new to serums.

This age-defying serum from Zelens is inspired by the study of telomeres which play a key role in cellular ageing. The added conditioning ingredients such as squalane, hyaluronic acid and pump-action cream makes it a great choice for drier skin types, too. Aside from that, it is also deeply moisturising as it contains hyaluronic acid and omega-rich camelia oil to smoothen and plump up the skin. The reason why this isn't in our top 5 ranking is due to the small volume as it'll mean frequent repurchasing as well as ending up with many empty bottles pretty quickly.
This lightweight serum promises immediate improvements, and it delivers smoother, more even-looking skin. Continual use sees a reduction in fine lines and pore size and your skin will feel firmer thanks to the powerful cocktail of anti-ageing ingredients including pro-xylane, pro ceramide and skin-plumping hyaluronic acid.
The Revitalift Laser Renew Serum is one of our more accessible recommendations due to its fairly low price point. Nevertheless, in terms of effectiveness, it may take a longer while to see any results as compared to using the other serums on our list.
From iconic beauty brand La Mer, The Regenerating Serum marries advanced science with active ingredients sourced from the ocean (such as nutrient-rich algae), to create a deliciously creamy serum that erases fine lines and wrinkles to give you a more youthful, glowing visage.
This high-end serum is no doubt a luxury splurge, which is why it sits a little further down on our list, but in terms of staving off the signs of ageing, it's one of the best you will ever try.
We partner with specialists across various fields to proof-read our buying guides to deliver accurate and reliable information. Our specialists do not endorse any products that we recommend.
