Facial oils are used to give skin a dewy glow. In fact, all facial oils will quench dry skin and fill out fine lines to some extent. However, those with more specific requirements may need to carefully consider the type of oil used in each product.
The comedogenic scale measures how likely an oil is to block pores and create 'comedones'. Not all oils block pores, only those rated 3 and above on the comedogenic scale are considered likely to cause blackheads or whiteheads in oily or acne-prone skin.
To be considered non-comedogenic, an oil must be rated 2 or lower. These include almond oil, rosehip seed oil and jojoba seed oil. Comedogenic oils can exacerbate congestion if it's found in high concentration. However, those with dry skin may find oils with a higher rating, like coconut and flaxseed, to be beneficial for hydration.
Just be aware that applying too much of any oil, whether rated comedogenic or not, can overload skin and cause breakouts. This is why most facial oils come with droppers to administer just one or two drops at a time.
Cold-pressed oils retain the maximum amount of beneficial natural antioxidants and nutrients. They're considered to have a higher potency because the ingredients have not been altered by high-heat. Often the best quality seeds and nuts are used in cold-pressed oils, as any imperfections cannot be masked by chemical processing techniques. Minimal processing does, however, result in cold-pressed oils typically having a stronger odour, which might take some getting used to.
Refined oils have been subjected to mechanical processes in order to remove any undesirable odours or colours, meaning you won't have to adapt to unusual scents or textures. Refined oil extraction also gives a higher yield and doesn't require the same quality of seeds and nuts, so these products tend to be easier on your wallet too.
Try to pick a facial oil that fits into your existing skin-care routine. Facial oils should be applied to clean, slightly damp skin by gently pressing onto the face, rather than rubbing in. It can be added to your moisturiser or foundation. However, you should avoid combining facial oil with products that contain SPF, as the efficacy of your sun protection could be affected!
For this reason, you may want to consider an oil designed for use overnight. These work while you sleep to help lock in moisture. If your mornings are particularly hectic, a night-time facial oil may also be the right choice for you.
Taking a moment to inhale the scent of a beautiful facial oil, in cupped hands, before applying it can make the whole experience feel like a spa ritual. However, those with sensitivities will want to choose unscented facial oils, to minimise the chance of flare-ups.
Manufacturers don’t have to disclose exactly what fragrances are used in their products, as it's considered commercially secret information. In fact, the term 'fragrance' can relate to over 3,000 different ingredients, making it difficult to pinpoint the specific culprit should you experience a skin reaction.
