How to Choose a High Chair in the UK

Key Points to Consider
  1. Make Sure the Chair Fits to Your Growing Child
  2. Ensure Your Child’s Safety With the Correct Safety Measures
  3. Consider That Material Impacts Budget, Portability and Sustainability
1

Choose a Chair That Adapts to Your Growing Child

Choose a Chair That Adapts to Your Growing Child

From Birth to Sitting Without Support: Go For Chairs That Are Adjustable to Every Stage

Not all high chairs are suitable for all ages. If you want your baby to be able to use a high chair from birth, it will most likely require a different seat attachment or a seat that can recline so it can adequately support them at this vulnerable stage.

Most high chairs suggest that infants start using them at around six months, when they are a bit more adaptable than a newborn. Look for a chair that has a good back, and, if you want the high chair to last until toddling years, a seat that is adjustable or has the option of removing it altogether to more resemble a normal chair.

Dr J Henderson

There is no need to change your high chair frequently - an adjustable one is very appropriate. You want your child to be able to sit up and enjoy mealtime with the family and be supported so that they are in an excellent position to not choke on the foods they are exploring. This is very important when solids are being used as finger foods.

A Removable Tray Table Allows for More Flexibility With Newborns and Easier Access to Harnesses

A tray table that can be moved and adjusted, or even completely detached, is a great asset when it comes to moulding a high chair to fit a child's needs. It is worth noting that this has to be an option if the high chair will be used by newborns; it is unlikely they will need a table for eating just yet!

A tray table that can be moved makes it a lot easier to get your child in and out of the chair, as it can become an obstacle when attempting to fasten harnesses. Once your child reaches 36 months or so, you may well want to start encouraging them to eat from the table, and a removable table will allow this.

How about a fitted booster seat to make your child comfortable at the table?

The tray helps with mealtimes and can be used as an explorative play table, developing those fine more and coordination skills.

Removing a tray allows you to concentrate so that you can lift your child in and out without getting limbs caught in a harness and/or causing accidents to both yourself and your child. It is also handy removing all food items away at once before they are thrown across the room - unless, of course, that has already happened!

Safety First: Ensure Your Child Is Secure With a Hassle-Free Harness and Sturdy Base

Safety First: Ensure Your Child Is Secure With a Hassle-Free Harness and Sturdy Base

Make Safety a Priority With a 3 or 5 Point Harness That’s Easy to Secure

Similarly to the seat, your child will require different levels of strapping in depending on ages. To avoid extra hassle when having to secure your little one in for each meal, you should look for maximum support with the fewest buckles

Security harnesses come as either '3 point' (which goes around the shoulders or waist and from the bottom, connecting with a buckle in the middle) or as a '5 point' which encompasses all of these. The 5-point harness is more secure as it will support your baby from the top and the bottom

Keep your youngster secured when on the move with a car seat for babies or toddlers too.

Dr J Henderson

Dr J Henderson

Most high chairs will be stable. A five-point harness is always advisable as it provides much more support over the hips, so your child does not move about, and if they move, they may be able to wriggle out of a 3 point harness from a height - a 5 point harness will be more secure.

If Your Child Tends to Fidget, a Wide Base Chair Is Best for Stability

Young children can be very wriggly when they want to be, so you want to make sure that your high chair can withstand all sorts of rocking and shaking. The best way to do with is with a solid base.

As a general rule, the wider the base, the sturdier it will be. Of course, you don't want this to mean that it takes up even more space, but if its cleverly designed then this shouldn't be too much of an issue.

Dr J Henderson

Don't just look out for the colour of a high chair to match your décor. There are considerations for a chair that will be part of your table, but you won't think about that if your infant is able to move the chair while in it or even cause it to fall over because it is top-heavy. Stability is the key - the wider, the sturdier.

Consider if Plastic or Wood Is Better for Your Priorities on Portability, Sustainability and Budget

Consider if Plastic or Wood Is Better for Your Priorities on Portability, Sustainability and Budget

Choose Wood if You Will Mainly Be Using the Chair at Home and Sustainability Is Your Top Priority

Wood is a great choice of material if you are conscious of your plastic usage as they tend to last longer than their plastic alternatives, adding to their sustainability. However, wood's sturdiness does make these chairs harder to transport but ideal if they'll remain in one place at home.

Sometimes the wooden options also lack comfort as they often don't have all of the extras that plastic high chairs do. In addition, you may or may not be able to fold them down depending on the design making them somewhat cumbersome. Overall, though, despite some modern plastic offerings being very aesthetically pleasing, wood remains the more stylish of the two choices.

Plastic Is Lightweight, Easy to Transport and Great for Smaller Spaces

Plastic high chair options are lighter and therefore tend to be easier to transport. They are also more likely to fold down easier for storage and are very easy to clean. A plastic high chair doesn't have to mean garish patterns and designs either, as plenty of models these days come in neutral tones to rival wood in the style stakes.

Another advantage of plastic options is that the cheapest on the market are much cheaper than the most affordable wood options. However, bear in mind that these budget options may not last as long as their wooden cousins.

7 Different Modes Make For an Ultra-Adaptable High Chair up to 12 Years

This chair has been designed with easy-to-use mechanisms that have been cleverly concealed behind smooth lines and a muted, grown-up colour palette. The fact that it is partly plastic does not cheapen its look at all, and the legs even have a wooden finish to add a touch of class.

Everything you would want to adjust is adjustable, from the tray table to the seat itself, which is why this chair will be suitable until your child reaches 12 years old. The cushions are made from a machine-washable material, taking the faff out of the clean-up!

An Early-Use Chair That Can Be Wheeled Around for Easy Transportation

What makes this high chair unique is the fact that your baby can use it from a very young age, not the usual six months. Its versatility is made possible by its different attachments – there's even the option of adding a mobile!

Due to all the gizmos that come with this high chair, it is definitely on the more expensive side, and it is by no means the most stylish choice out there being as bulky as it is. But the wheels make it easy to move and store, so it doesn't necessarily have to be on display the whole time.

A 3-In-1 High Chair, Booster Seat and Stool for Every Seated Situation

Are you in need of a high chair, a booster seat and a stool? Well, this product handily has all three in one. Its versatility means it can change as your child grows and develops, going all the way from having a reclining option when they're younger to a stool when they're able to sit and support themselves.

This high chair is great value for money and, while it does look plasticky and is not the sleekest of the bunch, it has all the adaptations of a more expensive chair without matching the cost.

This Chairs Can Adapt to Every Environment With Added Additional Recline Function

Everything on this chair is adjustable or removable, making it a brilliant choice if it is going to be moved around or needs to fit in with different environments. Having 7 different heights on offer means the chair can be made to match any table and the whole thing can be neatly folded away.

The cushioned seat ensures a cosy fit, which is great when the chair can be made to recline if your little one is in need of some rest after an eventful meal time.

Made With Robust European Beech, This Chair Will Stand the Test of Time

This high chair is different in the way that it is not limited to babies. It can be transformed as your baby grows into a child and even into adulthood. At 6 months old, the straps and extra security belt will mean your little one is safe and sound.

Eventually, all of these can be removed and the seat and footrest adjusted to make a chair that any grown-up would be happy to use. However, there's no proper tray table (although one can be bought separately), which is good if you'd prefer your child to eat at the main table, but not always the easiest option for controlling mess.

A British Brand That Keeps Children Enthralled With Storytelling Patterns

With a range of eye-catching patterns on comfortable cushions, all specially designed for this brand, your baby will be happy sitting on this chair through mealtimes and beyond. The fact that it reclines all the way back also means that it can be used from birth, allowing you to get even more usage for your money.

The adjustable tray table is extra-large, which may not be able to stop mess, but at least it should all remain on the tray which can be easily removed and put in the dishwasher afterwards

An Innovative Two-In-One Design in a Classic Chair

This high chair might have a traditional look with its varnished wood finish, but don't be fooled – it also has an unexpected trick up its sleeve. This high chair can be transformed into a mini table and chair so that the dinnertime fun can continue on a smaller scale.

The harness makes this chair safe and secure but it might be lacking a bit in comfort, although a cushion can be bought separately to help with this. While it can be halved, it is also not the easiest to store as it doesn't fold down any smaller than that.

Fun Colours and a 5 Point Harness Make This Chair Stand Out

This high chair has a number of things going for it, satisfying both adults and children alike. In addition to its bright colours (appealing to the babies) and the reasonable price (for the adults), this high chair ticks all the safety boxes. It has a five-point harness to ensure that baby is secure and it's padded for extra comfort too.

This high chair is also foldable meaning it can be stored away easily. It doesn't have the range of heights of some chairs and the bright colours could be a bit too much for a grown-up palette, but it is another simple yet effective option.

A Classic No-Fuss High Chair That Has Easy In-Out Access

You've probably seen this high chair before, or at least something similar, as it is the chair of choice for family-friendly coffee shops and restaurants all over. This is most probably because of the very affordable price tag, but just because it's cheap, that doesn't mean it doesn't do a good job.

This no-frills option (quite literally, as there is no cushioning) is a simple high chair, with no adjustable heights or extras. However, it has all the essentials such as the safety belt and a wide base, all for fraction of the price of other high chairs out there.

Extra High Chair Tips for Maximum Safety of Your Child

Extra High Chair Tips for Maximum Safety of Your Child

All high chairs are built to ensure the safety of your child in various ways, with some being more secure than others. But there are extra ways to make sure that whenever your little one is seated in that high chair, that they are safe:

  1. Check to make sure that the high chair is positioned at a distance where they cannot pull table clothes with hot food towards them or use objects to compromise the stability of the high chair.
  2. If you have a budding escapologist that has worked out the locking mechanism, then tie some extra material around the straps for double security.
  3. Only bring out the chair exclusively for mealtimes so that your child associates it with sitting and eating only, and not as a toy or something to climb at playtime.
