If you think a baby bottle steriliser will be something you would benefit from, there’s a few considerations you need to take into account before making a purchase. We'll cover all of these in this part of the article – the buying guide.
There are three main types of baby bottle steriliser, so we will take a look at each of these in turn so you can decide which would work best for you.
Microwave sterilisers kill bacteria using the heat from steam which is generated by placing them in a microwave. Some microwave sterilisers can keep items sterile for up to 24 hours if the lid remains closed, and others can also be used as cold water sterilisers when used with sterilising fluid.
Sterilising using a microwave steriliser takes roughly 2 -8 minutes depending on your microwave’s wattage, but, of course, remember that metal items cannot be sterilised using a microwave steriliser.
Like microwave varieties, electric sterilisers kill bacteria using the heat from the steam they generate, only you will simply need to plug the unit in at the wall to power it up. Sterilising takes around 5-15 minutes depending on the model you have, and similarly, items can remain sterile for up to 24 hours with the lid closed.
Electric sterilisers are generally the most convenient way of sterilising, particularly if you have a lot of items to sterilise or you don’t have a microwave. You will need a little more counter or cupboard space to store them, though.
UV sterilisers use ultraviolet light to sterilise your baby's bottles, which can eliminate up to 99.9% of bacteria on their surfaces. Owing to the fact they are water-free and only use light, UV sterilisers allow you to clean a wide range of objects such as toys, breast pump parts and dummies.
UV sterilizers are arguably much safer than sterilisers that use hot water, as there is a much-reduced risk of burns and scalds. In addition, using UV lights means there is no need to wait for your bottles to dry, which helps you be more efficient with your time.
They tend to take up much less space than other types of steriliser, however, being the latest techy invention, they are usually much more expensive so may not be ideal if you're on a budget.
Most sterilisers are large units that can take up quite a bit of worktop space. In order for your items to remain sterile, they need to be left in the unit with the lid closed, otherwise, bacteria in the air and on your surfaces will get into contact with them.
It is therefore important that you take note of the size of the unit so that you can be sure you have the appropriate amount of space to store it as long as your baby is using bottles. In addition, if you're considering a microwave steriliser, it's worth checking whether it will fit inside your appliance.
If you tend to get through a lot of bottles or if you have more than one baby in the house, then the number of bottles a steriliser can hold is an important consideration. Multi-bottle units not only allow you to sterilise more bottles in one go, but they will also help you keep your electricity bills down by minimising the number of times you use them.
Units with room for several bottles are also super convenient – you can fill the steriliser up with the day’s bottles and then sterilise them overnight so that they’re all clean and ready to go for the next day!
Sterilisers can come with a myriad of different features – more than we can go into any detail on within this buying guide! However, they can make using the steriliser as well as keeping on top of it all so much easier.
Features that you may find useful are things such as a drier (which will mean everything doesn't come out wet or need drying by hand) tongs, soothers and extra bottles and accessories.

With Nuby's more affordable microwave model, you'll be able to sterilise 4 bottles in just 4 minutes. It is lightweight and portable making it good for on the go, plus, the set also includes a colic bottle to help ease wind and discomfort and a dummy for your baby in case you need a spare to hand.
The high-sided design of the base helps prevent any spills on the way to and from the microwave which is a great idea, and it feels strong and durable so is sure to last the test of time. This is a simple but fantastic design from a reliable brand, and that's why we've chosen it as our favourite!
Nuby's UV steriliser is super fast, and sterilises baby bottles and accessories in just three minutes. It uses the same UV sterilising is used in hospitals to kill 99.9% of germs and is made from lightweight and stylish fabric that's easy to wipe clean.
It does have a higher cost being UV, but even so, this is a great buy especially if you spend a fair bit of time travelling. There's no need to wait for the bottles to cool before using them, and while the capacity isn't mentioned specifically there's loads of room to fit everything you need inside.
This practical microwave steriliser allows you to disinfect bottles, soothers, teats and baby accessories safely and hygienically within 5 minutes. It holds up to 6 bottles as well as associated accessories over two levels thanks to an internal rack, and it is designed to fit most microwaves.
It is definitely worth checking the dimensions of your microwave, though, as this is quite bulky and it would be disappointing to buy it and realise it doesn't fit. We really like the internal rack that allows you to fit more in, and it is a really simple steriliser that works really well.
The NUK Vario Express sterilises up to 6 baby bottles as well as any accessories within 6 minutes, and will keep them sterile for up to 24 hours if left closed. The removable basket is great for smaller items, and the modern ergonomic design is both user-friendly and attractive enough to sit on your kitchen worktop.
You should bear in mind that while NUK say that you can fit 6 bottles and accessories into the steriliser all at once, in reality, this is more likely to be 4 bottles and accessories. Aside from this, this is a fantastic steriliser that's easy to use, clean and maintain.
This steriliser from well-known brand Tommee Tippee offers a complete feeding set for your little one. It can sterilise up to 6 bottles and accessories in just 5 minutes, and the food and bottle warmer is suitable for breast milk, formula and baby food. Also included are anti-colic bottles which are designed to reduce colic symptoms by up to 80%.
This is another steriliser where the heating plate gets brown and discoloured very quickly, although it does not seem to affect how well it works. You will find this feeding set so useful and the anti-colic bottles are an absolute god send!
Vital Baby's UV steriliser is highly energy efficient, as it has a much lower power consumption compared to traditional electric or steam sterilisers, without the use of any chemicals. If left closed, this steriliser will keep the contents sterile for up to 72 hours as opposed to the usual 24 hours, which could prove useful.
It is also very lightweight and compact and a good option if you live in a hard water area where limescale could be an issue with steam cleaners. Vital Baby don't specify how many bottles this steriliser will hold, so you may need to try and work out how many of your bottles it will take using the internal dimensions.
Avent promise that their steriliser will kill up to 99.9% of germs in a sterilising cycle that lasts just 10 minutes. It has been designed to reduce the chance of unpleasant odours whilst also being space-saving with a roomy interior and a compact exterior. Providing the lid stay closed, the contents will stay sterile for 24 hours.
The area this steriliser could be improved is that the heating element very quickly goes brown and has a scorched smell and appearance. Other than this, it's very simple to use and comes apart easily to allow you to clean it thoroughly.
The Dr Brown’s Microwave Steriliser is a convenient way to sterilise up to 4 Dr Brown’s anti-colic bottles in one batch. The cleaning cycle takes approximately 8 minutes plus cooling time, and the unique custom-moulded tray allows easy positioning of the bottles and teats for effective cleaning.
Getting all the bottles arranged properly in this steriliser can be a bit fiddly, and people with smaller microwaves may find it too large. But it is otherwise very easy to use, it's durable, and it cleans up fantastically well after use.
Nuby's innovative, ultra-hygienic steriliser and dryer has 3 quick cycle settings so you can have ready-to-use bottles in a flash. It uses steam to kill 99.9% of germs and will remain sterile for 24 hours providing the lid is kept closed. It has room for up to 5 bottles as well as other feeding accessories, too.
The drying function on this steriliser could be improved, as in some instances, the bottles remained wet even after 30 minutes of drying. However, it has a great capacity for cleaning a few bottles and accessories in one go, and it is compact and looks good on your kitchen counter.
