The first thing to consider is the style. No, we’re not talking furniture styles such as Art Nouveau or Bauhaus. Instead, what we’re looking at is the different types of motion that you can get from a breastfeeding chair. The three main options to choose from are rocking, glider and swivel chairs. Let’s take a look at each individually.

Another factor to consider is the dimensions. Of course, knowing these measurements is vital when checking whether the piece can fit in your room or a designated corner. But in addition, it also gives you a gauge of how wide or narrow the seat will be.
You see, the width is a rather important factor. This might not matter if you only have one child, but if you have two that are feeding, then a wider chair will allow you to feed both simultaneously. Not only that, but narrow chairs are seldom comfortable as it is, so consider it when you're loaded up with all your baby accessories as well.
Of course, if you have a smaller nursery, a narrower chair is better than none. But, if you have space, it is worth opting for something a bit bigger for your comfort, as we imagine you’ll be spending plenty of time there over the next couple of years.
Babies are messy. There is categorically no way around it. Therefore, the material of the nursing chair is something worth thinking about. Classic synthetics such as polyester and microfibre are solid options as they can sometimes be machine washed and are less prone to stains.
Natural fibres such as cotton, on the other hand, will be softer and more comfortable to the touch, which you'll appreciate if you're spending hours on your chair every day. The issue is that the material is more delicate, meaning it can fall out of shape after time.
Plus, natural fabrics can require handwashing, which isn’t something many parents want to add to an ever-growing chores list. Either way, it's worth checking the care instructions before you buy so you know what to expect.
Always be prepared for the next feed by expressing milk in advance using a breast pump
While one of the great features of a nursing chair is its movement, that doesn’t mean you will always want it to be in motion. Ask the many parents over the years who have slept in theirs just because they couldn’t get the momentum to get themselves out without waking the baby.
Therefore, finding a chair that has a locking mechanism will allow you to ensure that the chair will remain stable while you’re climbing in and out. This doesn’t only make it easier, but it also makes the process a lot safer as the chair won’t move unless you want it to.
This feature is generally found on glider or swivel chairs, though, so if you’re looking for a classic rocking style, you’ll be out of luck.

What’s not to love about getting a little bit more for your money? One way to do that when purchasing a nursing chair is by picking up one with a footrest. Again, this is less likely if you’re opting for a traditional rocking style, simply because it wouldn’t work very well.
However, if you’re in the market for a glider or swivel, then a footrest is an option. These can be additional pieces of furniture or built into the chair, both of which have their advantages. For example, a separate piece of furniture might good for them to have as they get a little older, whereas a built-in rest will save space.
Either way, it will mean that you can put your feet up when feeding, which might not mean a lot now, but it sure will when the time comes.

While the rocking chair might be the classic, we have to say that the modern gliders seem to be the more cosy and comfortable option. It's for this reason that we've opted for the Tutti Bambini GC35 to take our top spot. It has all the hallmarks of a classic glider, with multiple reclining positions and an included footrest.
In addition, it has thick padding, good back support, large, pocketed armrests and is even known to be super easy to assemble, which we're sure a lot of people will appreciate. If we needed to sit in one chair fairly regularly for the next few years, we'd be happy if it was this one.
While most (if not all) of the rocking chairs in our ranking are contemporary, this one from Gaia Baby looks like it's from the future. The design is a minimalists dream, with sharp, clean lines and blocks of neutral colours. Luckily, it functions well too, thanks to decent-sized armrests and ample padding.
Gaia also provides an additional cushion to help you find the perfect posture. It's on the smaller side vertically, but horizontally it's plenty wide, giving you a roomy seat. It's expensive, but if you're a sucker for cool furniture, even in rooms where the recipient won't appreciate it, then you'll love this.
The Chatsworth is Kub's upgraded gliding-style nursing chair. The design uses a white wood frame with slate blue corduroy padding throughout that we think give it a beautiful look. It aims to maximise comfort and support, mainly by the thick padding and the various positions available to the sitter.
Furthermore, the dimensions of the seat make it roomier than most, which can be advantageous in many ways. Whether for aiding comfort or giving you more room to alternate positions, this is bound to be handy if you've been sat there a while.
Here, we've another product from the ever-reliant Obaby. This time, it's their take on the rocking chair, just with one extra feature – it has a high back. These dimensions make the chair a better option for taller folk as you'll get good support, even when sat up straight. So, at least a sore back shouldn't be on the cards.
The chair also comes with an additional cushion for ensuring that you can prop yourself up accordingly. The design is modern and comes with a nice, subtle oatmeal cover material which means once they are grown up, you'll be able to make use of it elsewhere in the house.
The first thing we take away from this glider nursing chair is just how fluffy and comfortable the padding and cushions are – they look like you could fall into them! This is something we imagine many parents have wished for in the past, and it's all over the chair too, even on the footrest.
The design allows for various reclining positions as well as the gliding motion. Add to this the motion accepting footstool, and you have one seriously comfortable nursing chair. Who knows, you might even end up liking doing the night feed.
KUB is known for producing a fantastic range of nursery-friendly furniture, and their Haldon rocking chair is no different. Simple, sleek and contemporary, the design is not only attractive but functional as well. For example, the microfibre cover material is perfect for dealing with spills and accidents while barely ever showing stains.
Also, the dimensions are on the smaller side, making it a great choice for those smaller bedrooms or nurseries. Some buyers have reported that the padding isn't as thick as other options, which could see you having to add your own cushions in addition.
This glider style nursing chair from Obaby is one of the best sellers on Amazon, and it's easy to see why. The design is clever, with both the chair and the footstool capable of a gliding motion, meaning you'll be able to keep your feet up at all times. There are also an impressive seven different reclining positions as well!
On top of that, you have plenty of soft microfibre cushions around the seat, with the arms providing some pockets for you to store whatever bits and pieces you may need. It's lockable too, but one issue some have noted is that it can be squeaky, so you might want to have the WD40 at the ready.
The Dursley from Ickle Bubba offers a modern twist on the traditional-style rocking chair. Its charming painted white design is teamed with soft, rose-coloured suedette padding, making it ideal for lengthy spells of feeding. The seat pad can be removed for cleaning, too.
Additionally, the armrest pads have pockets, which would be great to store baby accessories or some light entertainment for when your little one (hopefully) nods off. One thing to be wary of is that it's a little smaller than average. That could be handy if you have a small room, but it could also be a problem if you're on the taller side.
While this might not strictly be a nursing chair per se, that doesn't mean that it couldn't function as one. The design is similar to a famous IKEA product, so it has the same modern aesthetics and ability to be used as a regular chair once baby is no longer nursing.
There is a bit more padding on this superior version's seat though, and the soft cotton cover is easily removed for when cleaning time comes. However, there's a distinct lack of armrest support, which could prove to be a problem during those long, sleepless nights.
First up in our ranking, we have this hugely popular chair from Pottery Barn. The design looks more like your average living room armchair, which lends it for future use as just that. Plus, it's loaded with swivel and reclining positions, it's fully padded throughout and has big armrests.
While it can't be removed and machine washed, the cover material is stain-resistant and can be easily spot cleaned. However, it is expensive, so you'll need to have plenty of spare cash in the bank account. That said if you do, you'll no likely find it's a pleasure to use for years to come.
