Choosing the right plate size for your hair type and length is probably the first thing you should consider when purchasing a new pair of straighteners.

Ceramic plates take a little while to heat up and provide even heat distribution, they're particularly suitable for fine to medium hair. In contrast, titanium plates heat up very quickly and so can burn delicate hair if you're not careful. Therefore they're better suited to those with thick, healthy locks that can handle the heat.
Some plates also have the added bonus of being infused with keratin, which is ideal if you straighten your hair on a regular basis and have noticed it becoming brittle or lacklustre as a result. Keratin strengthens hair and leaves it looking revitalised, plus it reduces frizz by restoring moisture to each strand.

As we've mentioned, everyone's hair responds differently to heat. Luckily, all straightening devices have a maximum temperature setting, so you'll be able to select one which won't harm your tresses.
Since fine, dry, or coloured hair can break easily, it's generally advisable to stick to lower temperatures (around 160ºC) to avoid damaging your locks. Those with thicker hair, however, will benefit from a higher heat setting up to 200ºC.
If you'd describe your hair as neither thick nor fine, or you're unsure which temperature to go for, a device with a range of heat settings is a good option - this way, you can experiment until you find the one which works best for your tresses.
Ever find yourself trying to remember if you definitely turned your straighteners off when you're out and about? There's nothing worse if you ask us, so why not find a pair that you won't have to worry about all day?
To give you peace of mind, some products will automatically switch off after a certain amount of time - usually between 30 minutes and an hour. This is an incredibly handy feature that will prevent accidents and save you from rushing back home to check whether your bedroom is on fire.

Ghd is the ultimate luxury brand when it comes to hair straighteners, so we just had to include this platinum pair on our list! The rounded barrel and wishbone hinge allow you to create both poker-straight styles and glamorous curls with ease.
Working at an optimum styling temperature of 185ºC, and equipped with ultra-zone technology, there's no risk of these straighteners causing damage. Plus, the stunning vanity case will keep these straighteners in pristine condition when they're not in use or when you're staying away from home.
Although they may cost an arm and a leg, steam straighteners are all the rave right now and many hairdressers swear by them. They're not only efficient and quick, but also hydrating, resulting in less damage to your hair than the regular flat irons!
We love everything about this 3rd generation of the Steampod because it stands out in the market especially with its built-in water tank that allows you style up to 192m of thick hair without having to refill. That's twice the height of Big Ben, and more than a full head of thick hair!
Thanks to this low-cost steam flat iron by iGutech, you really don't have to break the bank for a steam straightener. It creates a unique straight hair effect for you while retaining 90% of the moisture in your hair and also adding more moisture to it.
A must have for anyone with dry hair, this product works better than conventional hair straighteners in controlling the amount of heat that goes into your hair to protect it from burning, split ends and frizz. And with 5 different heat settings, it can be used to smooth all kinds of hair!
These miniature straighteners by Cloud Nine are just 15 cm in length, so they're great for styling fringes or short hair. Combine this with the fact they weigh only 66 grams, and you've got the perfect pair for the gym or weekends away when you've got limited suitcase space.
With a single temperature setting of 150ºC, a heat-up time of 20 seconds, and a hibernation function, you can't beat these chic straighteners for a quick touch up while you're on the go.
These portable straighteners by BaByliss are sleek and stylish, and come with a beautiful pouch to keep them safe. Charging the lithium-ion battery for three hours will give you 30 minutes of power, which we think is just enough for grooming on the go.
The three heat settings (160°C, 180°C, and 200°C) mean that these straighteners are suitable for all hair types, and tame frizz in no time. The only downside is the high price, but we think it's worth it for a one-off haircare splurge.
These deluxe straighteners by Lily England have an eye-catching rose gold design and feature a 360° swivel cord for effortless styling. The ceramic plates are perfect for those with frizzy hair and can be used to create curls as well as smoothing out wavy locks.
Best of all, the fully adjustable temperature (ranging from 100ºC-230ºC) is clearly visible on the LED display so there's no risk of choosing the wrong setting. For less than £40, we think these are a total bargain!
The wide plates of these straighteners by Nicky Clarke are ideal if you have particularly thick or long hair. Plus, the 360 degree swivel cord and 3-metre long cable make it easy to style your hair wherever you need to, without having to be close to a plug socket.
Whilst you'll have to source your own heat mat or pouch, and there's only one temperature setting available, this is a brilliant option if you just want something affordable and reliable.
These keratin and almond oil-infused straighteners by Remington will work wonders on dry or damaged locks, leaving them feeling stronger and softer. We especially love the intuitive heat protection sensor which detects moisture levels in the hair and automatically optimises the temperature to protect from damage.
They also have extra-long plates, and a heat-up time of just 15 seconds. It's just a shame that this product is on the expensive side, especially when it doesn't come with any exciting accessories other than a travel pouch.
These cordless straighteners have smoothing ceramic plates and require 3-4 hours of charging to provide 60 minutes of usage. They also have a clever memory function that remembers which temperature setting you used last time, meaning you don't have to spend valuable time fiddling around with the settings.
Although these straighteners aren't the best quality or the most attractive design, they're inexpensive, do not have cords that can tangle, compact enough for travel, and get the job done quickly!
If you're on a strict budget or just don't fancy splashing too much cash on a new gadget, we recommend these simple yet effective straighteners by TRESemmé. A choice of two heat settings is offered, so they'll smooth out fine and normal hair nicely.
However, the super-slim design of this product means that whilst it may be a match for shorter hair, it doesn't work particularly well on thick or very long hair. It also sadly lacks an automatic off-switch, which is why it's at the bottom of our list.
Your hair straighteners should last you between 2-3 years with proper storage in a zipped heatproof case. However, usage varies between people so you should look out for plates that are lifting or have worn down, or that you’re needing to go over the same section as your telltale signs to replace them.
Hair straighteners are exposed to all kinds of products like heat protectants and sprays which essentially bake onto the surface of the plates. To clean them, after waiting for them to cool down if they aren’t already, get a baby wipe or some rubbing alcohol on a cotton pad to remove the residue buildup.
Yes, hair straighteners can be packed into your hand luggage without issue. Just keep in mind that different airport securities have different rules when it comes to what you must remove from your bag for checking, so it may be wise to keep them at the top of your luggage just in case.
