While dry shampoo may seem like a recent addition to the ever growing arsenal of men’s hair and grooming products on the market, you may be surprised to know it’s been around since the 1700s!
Dry shampoo today is a powdered, starch based haircare product used to absorb oils from the scalp. While we advocate for regular hygiene practice, it’s not always practical or possible to wash your hair depending on the situation. Furthermore, daily hair washing strips the scalp of the essential oils necessary for keeping your hair full and healthy.
As the name suggests, dry shampoo doesn’t require water to use so it’s a great go to when you are in a hurry or out and about. Investing in a good dry shampoo is a smart choice for those who enjoy the great outdoors. When camping or hiking, giving your hair a quick cleanup with dry shampoo certainly beats attempting to rinse out soap suds by pouring a bottle of water over your head.
Mess-free, quick and easy, the beauty of aerosol sprays is that they don’t require much effort; no need for a mirror or comb, spray onto your roots and give it a quick shake with your fingers and you are done!
An aerosol dry shampoo is also a good companion for outdoor activities where you aren’t likely to have access to adequate hair washing facilities. If you plan to visit any music festivals this summer, bring one along and give your hair a quick spritz in the morning. Your tent mates will thank you for it!
These loose powder dry shampoos often come in a can or bottle similar to talc. These are a great choice to throw in your bag when flying, as many airlines have restrictions on carrying aerosols. Especially useful when travelling long-haul or you have stopovers as you can apply it in the airport or plane cabin and leave feeling refreshed when you get to your destination.
While there is absolutely no reason men can’t buy dry shampoo aimed at women, the scents in feminine haircare tend to be more floral and baby powder-like. If you want something more masculine and a bit less cloying, opt for dry shampoos with a muskier, woodier scent or ones with no scent at all.
When buying an aerosol, if you plan to leave it at home buying a standard 200 ml or larger 250 ml size will save you money in the long run. Especially if you are you incorporating it as part of your regular grooming routine. However, if you are looking for a mini dry shampoo for your gym bag or briefcase, under 50 ml is the way to go!
Consider the length of your hair; close cropped men’s haircuts are a timeless barbershop staple and if you opt for a short cut you won’t need to use as much product per application. That said, short hair looks greasier quicker since the ends are closer to the scalp. As a result, you may find yourself needing to freshen up between washes a bit sooner than your friends with lengthier locks.
If you are using an aerosol dry shampoo, you should spray it from a distance of around 6 inches from your scalp. Powder dry shampoos can be sprinkled on or worked in with your fingers.
Next, you will want to distribute it through the lengths of your hair. You can do this by massaging it into the scalp then giving it a quick brush or comb, although combing it through with your fingers works just as well. Some dry shampoos will leave a white residue when you apply it, don’t panic! By completing this step the particles will be broken up and disperse evenly along the follicle.
