How to Choose a Hot Air Brush in the UK

Key Points to Consider
  1. For a Smooth Finish Opt For a Rotating Hot Air Brush
  2. Look for Barrel Brushes to Add Volume to Your Roots
  3. Consider the Size of the Barrel for Tightness of Curls
  4. For Those With Damaged Hair Choose a Hot Hair Brush With Multiple Heat Settings
1

Choose a Static Brush for Versatile Styling, or a Rotating Brush for Easy Blow Drying

Choose a Static Brush for Versatile Styling, or a Rotating Brush for Easy Blow Drying

There are two main types of hot air brush that you can choose from. .Static hot air brushes have a fixed brush barrel, much like your normal hairbrush. To get any shape or curl to your hair, you manually turn the brush to manipulate the shape of the hair shaft and create your desired style. This makes them more adaptable, but it can be tiring on your wrist if you have a lot of hair to work with.

Rotating hot air brushes have revolving barrels that turn as you dry your hair, so you don't have to manipulate the brush as you use it. They can take a little bit of getting used to – you may end up with a mass of tangled hair at first! – but when you do, they are super easy to use and give your hair a fantastically smooth finish.

2

Opt For a Barrel Brush for Volume and Waves, or a Flat Brush for Hair Straightening

Opt For a Barrel Brush for Volume and Waves, or a Flat Brush for Hair Straightening

Hot air brushes are often supplied with interchangeable tools to allow you to create a wide range of styles according to your hair type. The most common attachments you will find included with hot air brushes are barrel brushes. These are fantastic for styling your hair into different shapes and adding volume at your roots to create a salon blow dry effect.

Barrel brushes can come with a couple of styles of bristle, similar to those on a hairbrush. Plastic pin type bristles will help to detangle. If you'd like the option to go sleeker look for hot brushes that come supplied with a regular flat or larger paddle-style brush head. These are great for creating a smooth finish with a healthy shine.

Curling attachments are less common but can be useful nonetheless – simply attach the curling head to the handle and wrap your hair around the barrel to create soft ringlets and curls. This can be tricky to master, but if you regularly style curls it can be much kinder to your hair and scalp than using a curling iron.

3

Pick a 20 - 30 mm Barrel for Tighter Curls, or a 40+ mm Barrel for Loose Waves

Pick a 20 - 30 mm Barrel for Tighter Curls, or a 40+ mm Barrel for Loose Waves

The barrels of the brushes that are included will affect your finished style, so it's worth checking exactly what's included. If you want tighter waves and curls, look for narrower barrels. If you're looking to create soft and bouncy waves, opt for wider barrels of 40 mm or over. If you’re not sure what look you want or you want to experiment, opt for a hot air brush that has a few different sizes so you can pick and choose

4

Select a Hot Air Brush With Two or More Heat Settings to Avoid Damaging Your Hair

Select a Hot Air Brush With Two or More Heat Settings to Avoid Damaging Your Hair

Picking a hot air brush with multiple heat settings means you will be able to choose the right level, ensuring you’re not inadvertently damaging your tresses or exacerbating the condition of already-damaged or fragile hair. You ideally want to go for one with a few different heat settings, as this gives you much more control over which heat level, or levels, you choose.

The Go-To Hot Air Styler Made Popular by Social Media Influencers

The Revlon One-Step Volumiser is a 2-in-1 styling tool that gives the drying power of a dryer and the volume of a styler. It glides through your hair to detangle, dry and volumise in half the time it'd take you to do it separately, plus, its ionic technology dries the hair faster while causing much less damage.

The 2" barrel creates beautiful soft waves with lifted roots and is ideal for medium to long hair. This is a hugely popular hot air brush, especially with social media influencers, and we can see why – it's quick and easy to use, it leaves your hair looking healthy and full of bounce and it comes with a 4-year guarantee, all for a reasonable price.

Intelligent Heat Control Minimises Heat Damage to Your Hair

The Dyson Airwrap hot air brush styler combines powerful airflow with controlled heat to dry and style your hair from damp without extreme heat. Powered by a Dyson V9 digital motor, it uses the Coanda effect to attract and wrap the hair to the barrel with no need for clamping, gloves or winding mechanisms.

We love the intelligent heat control system that measures the airflow temperature over 40 times a second in order to regulate and control the amount of heat applied to your hair. The myriad of accessories and tools are also very appealing. This is a premium product with a premium price tag, but if you have the money then this brush is absolutely worth the investment

Ceramic Barrel Protects and Moisturises Your Hair

Remington's HYDRAluxe Volumising Air Styler gives your hair fantastic volume and bounce, while the ceramic-coated barrel helps to preserve your hair’s natural moisture balance to leave it soft and shiny. The brush styles while using lower heat, so you can create your desired look while protecting your hair from heat damage.

This is a fantastic hot air brush for smoothing and adding volume to longer hair with its large barrel, as it is designed especially for creating big, bouncy waves as opposed to curling straight or short hair. If this is what you're after, this is a very effective tool for creating smooth and shiny styles with minimal damage.

42mm Barrel for Achieving a Salon Finish at Home

This smaller 42 mm Big Hair Styler by Babyliss combines the drying power of a hairdryer with a rotating stylish brush to re-create the volumising drying technique used by hairdressers. The brush spins both clockwise and anti-clockwise, meaning that a full-volume look has never been easier to achieve with one tool.

The rotating brush feature can take a bit of time to master to begin with, as it can initially cause a few snags and tangles. But once you have the technique sorted, this hot air brush is quick and easy to use and you really will feel like you've just stepped out of the salon!

Firm Bristles Add Volume and Body From Root to Tip

TRESemme's large ceramic Hot Air Styler is another one designed to build volume and body in your hair from root to tip. The firm bristles give total styling control and combined with the ceramic technology in the barrel, you're given the ultimate control over frizz for perfectly smooth hair every time.

The addition of the heat protection spray is very useful, and the large 50 mm barrel gives great volume and shine. Just be aware that the barrel and tip on this brush can get very hot which could pose a problem if you accidentally touch your neck or ear, and it is likely to overheat if used for long periods of time.

Combines Natural and Nylon Bristles for Smoothness and Shine

With its large 50 mm barrrel, this brush is designed to add fullness and body while the soft mixture of natural boar and nylon bristles creates beautiful smoothness and shine. The large ceramic barrel is suitable for most hair types, and the different heat settings plus the two rotation speeds give you total styling control.

Those with finer hair may find that the bristles on this brush create tangles and knots, and similarly, if you have thick or coarser hair, you may find that it takes a long time to create the desired effect. On the upside, the rotating feature is really helpful for reaching all around your head and the results are wonderfully smooth.

Curl Release Feature for Tangle-Free Styling

The TRESemme Full Finish Hot Air Styler gives you fantastic styling flexibility. You can shape your hair in looser or tighter curls or add body and volume, and the curl release button gives styling control for a tangle-free finish. There's also a 3-year guarantee, giving you added reassurance that you're buying a styler that will last.

Unfortunately, the power cord of 1.75 metres doesn't offer much reach so you may find yourself pushed to find somewhere suitable to use it. Securing the different styling attachments can also be tricky. All in all, though, this hot air brush is compact and gives good results, not to mention that it's really affordable.

Anti-static Hot Air Brush to Help Prevent Frizz

The Remington Volume and Curl is kind to your hair, as each attachment has an anti-static coating to give you a smooth glide and no static or frizz. The three heat and speed settings give you an excellent level of control and a cool-shot function aims to give your style staying power.

This brush offers great value and the heatproof pouch included is sure to come in handy, but there are a couple of downsides. The tips of the styling attachments can get extremely hot, so care should be when using it in case of any accidental burns. Also, the cool shot isn't as pronounced as you would expect, unfortunately.

Perfect for Creating Beautiful Styles on Shorter Hair

This hot air brush from Nicky Clarke uses negative ions to smooth your hair's cuticles for faster drying with less frizz and flyaways, leaving a sleek finish and more defined curls. The four attachments make it ideal for styling fringes or shorter hair as well as straightening, smoothing and creating beautiful waves.

The 3-metre power cord will make it really easy to position yourself, too. The area this hot air brush falls a bit short on is that there is no on/off switch so it remains on unless switched off at the plug socket, which could be a problem if you need to put it down in between sections as you style.

Intuitive and Versatile Rotating Styler Brush for Fine Hair

Remington have created this versatile hot air brush with a good range of styling attachments, so you'll have the choice of loose curls, sleek and straight styles or adding shape and volume. The brush head rotates both ways, allowing you to achieve a symmetrical shape without changing the accessory.

This would be a great styler for anyone with finer hair, but if you have thicker hair you may find it overheats fairly easily. There is also a knack to getting the styling attachments to fit securely to the base. However, it offers a good range of looks, and the fact it comes in a storage case is a welcome addition.
