How to Choose a Hair Mask for Dry Hair in the UK

Key Points to Consider
  1. Choose a Mask Containing Key Ingredients to Combat Dry Hair
  2. Use Mask With Silicones to Lock in Moisture, but Be Aware That These Can Cause Build Up
  3. Go for a Mask With Leave in Time of Around 2 - 3 Minutes to Save Time

Make Sure to Select a Mask With Key Ingredients to Help Combat Dry Hair

Make Sure to Select a Mask With Key Ingredients to Help Combat Dry Hair

If You Have Dry or Sensitive Skin, Choose a Mask With a Natural Oil Such as Argan Oil or Coconut Oil

Natural oils offer great hydration and have been used throughout history to keep hair healthy, long before big cosmetic stores appeared. These ingredients are particularly helpful in restoring damaged hair, which is what makes them so popular.

Some of the most common oils in dry hair masks are argan oil, coconut oil, avocado oil, rosehip oil, jojoba oil and macadamia oil. These oils also have the added benefit of being kinder to your scalp, and can even help treat dandruff and psoriasis. So, choose a mask with a natural oil if you have dry or sensitive skin.

Jojoba oil moisturizes the hair, adds nutrients, and stimulates the scalp for hair growth. Argan oil is rich in tocopherols (vitamin E) and fatty acids (oleic, linoleic, palmitic, and stearic acid), giving it soothing properties that may be helpful for people with inflammatory scalp conditions such as dandruff or psoriasis. However, there is little reliable information on argan oil effects on hair growth, health, thickness, or strength.

Opt for Keratin to Restore Hair Protein

Keratin is a natural protein found in our hair. The keratin within each strand can be destroyed by heat and chemical treatments, leaving hair brittle and prone to damage. Hair masks that contain keratin will help restore hair by replacing lost proteins. This makes hair stronger and gives better elasticity, as well as a smoother texture.

If you Google keratin treatments, you'll probably find articles warning you about extreme side effects. This is because some salon keratin treatments use formaldehyde. Thankfully, this has been banned in the UK, so any keratin product in the UK will be safe to use!

Due to its smaller size, hydrolysed keratin is used topically on the hair because it helps fill the minor gaps throughout the hair shaft, including its three layers known as the cuticle, cortex, and medulla. Filling these microscopic gaps with broken-down protein helps to strengthen hair's structure.

Studies have also shown that hydrolysed keratin can improve hair's texture so that it looks and feels smoother. Due to its amino-acidic nature, it also acts as a humectant, drawing moisture into the hair.

To Keep Hair Well Hydrated and Smelling Pleasant, Use Plant Extracts Like Cactus and Fruit Extracts Like Banana

Some dry hair masks use plant extracts to hydrate hair. A plant extract that's particularly popular at the moment is cactus. This is because cactus stem extract is high in antioxidants and has anti-inflammatory proprieties, so it's ideal for soothing an irritated scalp.

Sometimes fruit extracts are used in hair masks as they contain a range of vitamins and minerals for healthier hair and smell fantastic. For example, banana is ideal for hydration as it contains vitamins B6 and C, and has a sweet, tropical aroma.

Cactus oil has many potential benefits for hair due to its high nutrient content. This oil is rich in vitamin E, C and A, and has a high content of omega fatty acids. Due to its high vitamin content, cactus oil is considered one of the best moisturising agents for hair. It also protects and moisturises the scalp, banishing itchiness, and some studies suggest it might fortify hair follicles and promote hair growth.

Pick a Mask With Silicones to Lock in Moisture, but Beware That They Can Build Up Over Time

Pick a Mask With Silicones to Lock in Moisture, but Beware That They Can Build Up Over Time

Silicones have gotten a bit of a bad name for themselves. However, they can be useful for those with dry hair. That's because they coat the outer layer of hair, locking in moisture and making it smooth and shiny. They can also help detangle hair and reduce breakage.

The only trouble is that they're difficult to remove from your hair, causing them to build up over time and leading to breakage. But this can be mitigated, providing you use a good clarifying shampoo.

Of course, everyone's hair reacts differently so it's best to experiment to find the right one for you. Most of the common silicones you'll find in hair products end with 'cone'. So remember to scan the ingredient list of a hair mask before purchasing.

If you're looking for silicone-free conditioners, we have just the suggestions!

Silicones form a thin, waterproof coating around your hair cuticle (the outermost layer of the hair fibre). This coating keeps your hair hydrated from within whilst also preventing moisture from penetrating the hair shaft and causing frizz. The issue is that some silicones are not water-soluble, which leads to build-up if applied regularly.

Over time, hair will appear dull and gets dehydrated and weak from lack of moisture. To avoid this, you must use a deep cleansing shampoo once or twice a week or stick to products with water-soluble silicones such as Dimethicone copolyol, Lauryl Methicone Copolyol and any silicone with PEG as a prefix.

3

Consider a Mask With a Short 2-3 Minute Leave in Time to Save Time

Consider a Mask With a Short 2-3 Minute Leave in Time to Save Time

Each hair mask requires you to leave it in for a different amount of time. Most will need to be left in for 2-3 minutes, or 3-5 minutes. That may not seem like much difference, but the time it takes to work can affect how you use each one.

You might find yourself getting bored waiting around for 5 minutes, so hair masks that take longer to work might be better saved for pampering sessions on evenings where you can sit back, relax and read a book. On the other hand, a 2-3 minute hair mask is ideal for when you're in the shower. That way you can put the hair mask on, wash the rest of your body and then rinse it off.

If you're someone who's always short on time, browse our favourite anti-frizz serums that will help to tame frizzes in a jiffy!

The best thing to do is follow the instructions for the specific products. As a general rule, moisturising hair treatments can be left on your hair at any time. After a certain time, you don't benefit from the products. Usually, 3-5 minutes is enough for normal healthy hair, but if it's dry and damaged, 10-20 minutes is better. More than 20 minutes does not add extra benefits.

This mask uses a combination of plant oils to help restore very dry hair.  Don't be put off by the word oil, it won't make your hair look greasy. Oil is a key ingredient used to help hydrate your hair leaving it light and bouncy, rather than sticky and flat.

Regularly using this hair mask can improve the look of your locks and help to combat frizz. We recommend using it with the shampoo and conditioner from the same line for best results. Your hair will thank you for it!

A Keratin Mask to Revive Brittle Hair

This mask will give dry and brittle hair a new lease of life and protect it from future breakage. It contains keratin which is a protein naturally found in your hair. A lack of keratin will weaken the hair, so use this mask to restore it to its former glory.

The mask has a thick texture and smells great, and with a lightweight formula that won't weigh down hair. You can even leave this mask on a little longer if you want to give your hair a real treat!

Here is a mask treatment that will be kind to dry and damaged hair, adding moisture whilst making it easier to detangle. The coconut oil is perfect for locking in hydration, and it's also good for sensitive skin and helping scalp problems!

To give your hair a quick treat, leave this mask on 2-3 minutes, as part of your normal hair care routine. You can also leave this hair mask on overnight, that'll give you extra hydration if your hair is feeling extremely dry and damaged.

Silk Proteins for Soft Healthy Hair

Ogx is another brand that uses Argan Oil to help restore dry hair. Ideal for those with frizzy or flyaway hair, the formula uses silk proteins to get your hair looking soft and silky and smoothed out in no time!

This hair mask is formulated for use alongside Ogx's shampoo and conditioner in the same range. However, it's more than suitable for use as a stand-alone product with your current shampoo.

Detox and Strengthen Dry and Damaged Hair

This mask hydrates hair using green tea and avocado oil. Admittedly it's a little different from some other hair care masks, but it gets the job done. This mask doesn't just hydrate, it also helps to strip any chemicals that have built up in your hair, that if left in can dry out hair and cause damage.

Use this mask if you have bleach-damaged hair as it'll help restore your hair to its former glory, whilst strengthening your locks. It's just a shame that the smell isn't as a pleasant as other sweeter-scented options.

Argan Oil to Hydrate, Smooth and Add Shine

Argan Oil is a fantastic ingredient for helping to hydrate dry hair. It'll smooth out your strands and add shine, without using any silicones, which is ideal if you're using a herbal-based shampoo. Plus, it leaves hair smelling great!

However, it's better to use this product on relatively healthy hair as it won't fix hair with deep colour damage. That aside, it offers hydration at a low price, making it a great option if you're buying on a budget.

A Conditioning Mask With Natural Ingredients to Leave You With Silky, Healthy Hair

This is a conditioning mask with natural ingredients that will leave your hair feeling silky smooth. It's a great option if you'd like to switch to silicon-free and comes in a big tub that's perfect for adding into your daily routine.

Simply leave it in for 3 minutes, and you're ready to go! The only problem is that although this mask doesn't contain any animal-derived ingredients, Garnier isn't a cruelty-free brand. So, although it's marked as vegan, some may still wish to avoid it.
