How to Choose an Anti-Frizz Serum in the UK
- Search for Beneficial Ingredients Such as Argan and Coconut Oil
- Choose a Silicone-Enriched Serum to Increase Smoothness and Shine
- If You Prefer Natural Products, Look For Sulphate and Paraben-Free Formulations
Look For Beneficial Ingredients Like Argan and Coconut Oil to Make Sure the Serum Is Suitable for Your Hair Type and Needs

- Dry or distressed hair: Ideal for dry or distressed tresses, argan oil is full of antioxidants and vitamins like Vitamin E. These can protect against the damage caused to your hair by environmental pollution and hot straightening tools. Using a serum with argan oil is an easy way to nourish your hair so that it feels soft to the touch.
- Damaged hair: Another great ingredient for damaged locks, keratin is a protective protein which naturally occurs in our hair. However, if you regularly use heat when styling your hair, these proteins can be destroyed. Products with added keratin can therefore help to restore your hair’s strength, leaving it looking glossy and full.
- Fine or oily hair: If you have fine hair or an oily scalp, a heavy serum that will cause greasiness. Instead, go for a lightweight serum with ingredients that will tone the hair’s follicles and add a subtle sheen to your hair without weighing it down. Avoid any heavy oils, and look for lighter oils or silicone-based serums. Use a very small amount of product and only apply to the ends of your hair, avoiding your scalp.
- Thick, curly hair: Curly locks can easily be ruined by frizz, so you’ll want a serum that provides definition whilst banishing flyaways. Oils such as sweet almond and jojoba are ideal as they’re super hydrating. These oils will improve your hair’s elasticity and help to soften each curl. To prevent your curls from sticking together, search for a lightweight detangling formula that won't weigh your hair down.
- Chemically treated hair: If you have hair that’s been coloured or chemically treated, you’ll want to avoid anti-frizz serums that contain alcohol or harsh chemicals, as they’ll dry your tresses out. Instead, go for products with naturally moisturising oils or butters, like coconut oil. Coconut oil is great for keeping the hair hydrated while banishing frizz. It also boosts hair growth and shine.
- All hair-types: Hydrolysed silk protein is another common ingredient found in anti-frizee serums. Ordinary silk has the ability to retain almost 10,000 times its weight in water, so, as you can imagine, hydrolysed silk protein is great for moisturising all hair types. It is capable of improving shine and also acts as a protective barrier for your hair against the environment.

Opt for a Serum With Silicone to Improve Smoothness and Shine and Protect Your Hair From Damage

Silicone is an active ingredient in most serums due to its ability to make your hair very smooth and shiny. It coats each strand to ensure that your hair is free from flyaways, and this coating protects your hair from damage by the environment and heated styling tools. It even prevents breakage from brushing by reducing friction – so you can see why it’s such a common ingredient in serums.
Whilst some lower-quality silicones may damage your hair, those of a higher quality should be water-soluble so you can easily rinse them out when shampooing. If you’re still not keen on the idea of using a silicone-based serum, though, there are a few natural options out there; we’ve included one on our list of recommendations just in case!

Search for Products That Are Sulphate and Paraben-Free if You Prefer Using Natural Products

Aside from silicones, sulphates and parabens are also commonly found in hair products to boost their performance. Sulphates such as Sodium Laurel Sulphate (SLeS) and Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS) are cleansing agents which give hair products such as shampoo a luxurious lather. Parabens are preservatives that are added to ensure the product's stability and longevity.
There have been growing health concerns surrounding these two types of additives. But aside from this, they are also potential irritants that can trigger unpleasant reactions especially for those who are more prone to sensitivities.
To always be on the safe side, or if you prefer using natural products, opt for formulations that are sulphate and paraben-free. We have included this information in our spec table to help you to easily identify suitable products.

A Natural and Cruelty-Free Way to Beat Frizz With a Sweet Almond Scent
The luxurious argan oil in this formula will help to increase the elasticity of your tresses, whilst the sweet almond oil gives it a lovely scent. Plus, the wheat bran extract will make your hair much less prone to tangling. For a natural yet effective anti-frizz product, choose Noughty!
A Keratin-Based Serum, Enriched With Hydrating Ingredients to Restore Your Hair
If you regularly use heat or chemical products to style your mane, this is definitely the serum to pick. Reasonably priced with simple yet chic packaging, this product is ideal if your hair needs a little extra TLC. You also don't need much product so it should last you a long time!
John Frieda Frizz Ease Original 6 Effects Serum for Medium to Thick Hair
The Highly-Recommended Classic Choice for Curly and Thick Hair That Features Plenty of Proteins
The compact size of this serum means that you can easily carry it around in your bag, so you’ll always be able to keep your hair in tip-top condition. Cheap and cheerful, this is a great choice if you’re on a budget but want salon-quality frizz protection.
Promotes Shine and Smoothness for Curly, Wavy, Coily Hair Textures
For curly hair types, managing frizz is a daily struggle but a necessary one if you want to achieve definition and bouncy locks. Luckily, Umberto Giannini understands the struggle, and has come up with a moisturising formula to help make all types of coily hair textures more manageable.
A few pump of this serum will detangle and smooth over every single strand of hair, giving it more definition for a flawless finish. It is also suitable for damaged, colour treated hair. However, fine or oily hair types might find it a little too heavy.
Add a Touch of Shine With This Silicone-Based Gentle Serum, Ideal for Fine and Oily Hair Types
Unfortunately, this product is not suitable for thicker or curlier hair, as it’s a very light formula which will struggle to deal with a lot of frizz. For fine or oily hair though, or those who only need a serum occasionally, it’s perfect!
Garnier Ultimate Blends Coconut Hair Oil for Frizzy Hair
Long-Lasting, Vegan Formula Infused With Hydrating Coconut Oil and Cocoa Butter
So, it’s ideal for those who want a cruelty-free serum with a delicious coconut scent. As it’s lightweight, this is a good choice for a range of hair types. Plus, it’s incredibly affordable for the large amount that you get! It does have fragrance however, which may cause irritation for sensitive skin types.
A Top-Quality Frizz Tamer for Those With Especially Dry or Coloured Hair
As this is a high-end product, it’s quite expensive, but the sizable bottle should give you glossy, manageable locks for a while. If you’re on a budget though, you might want to give this one a miss!
Creightons Frizz No More Sleek & Shine Miracle Serum
A Scented Serum That Smooths Frizzy Hair While Protecting Against Humidity
However, for those who have a lot of frizz to tame, this is a very small bottle that might not last long. The packaging is also a little garish, so you might want to keep this bottle inside your bathroom cabinet rather than out on display!
How to Use an Anti-Frizz Serum

Probably the most important thing to remember when it comes to serum is that less is always more when it comes to the application. One or two drops should be all that’s needed to tame frizz – any more than that, and you may risk making your hair look greasy.
Another way to prevent your hair from looking like it’s oily is to only apply the serum to the ends and middle section of your hair, avoiding your scalp. Some thicker serums may be difficult to apply evenly. If this is the case, rubbing the serum into your hands first will warm it up and allow you to evenly distribute it across your hair.
