How to Choose a Bronzer Brush in the UK

Key Points to Consider
  1. Pick a Natural Hair Brush or Synthetic Brush, Depending on Your Favourite Bronzer Type
  2. Find a Brush That Achieves Your Desired Results
  3. Choose a Brush With Densely Packed Bristles for Contouring and Sculpting
1

Choose a Natural Hair Brush for Powdered Bronzer, or a Synthetic Brush for Liquid and Cream

Choose a Natural Hair Brush for Powdered Bronzer, or a Synthetic Brush for Liquid and Cream

Natural Hair Brushes Are Better for Picking up Pigment and Blending Powdered Bronzers

Natural brushes are usually made from animal hair, so bear this in mind if ethical beauty is important to you. Like human hair, the outside of each strand contains a cuticle that absorbs and wicks oils away from the skin. This makes them a good choice for picking up loose and pressed powders, but not so great when it comes to cream or liquid bronzers as their moisture absorption can inhibit application.

On a positive note, natural hairs have a fluffier texture than synthetic fibres, feel softer on the skin, and splay out more when pressure is applied, which can be advantageous when blending.

Natural hair brushes are generally more expensive than synthetic brushes and prone to shedding. They are also more challenging to clean, as pores in the hairs will pick up old makeup that causes bacteria to build-up over time.

On the lookout for a new bronzer? Take a look at our top recommendations for Bronzers for Dark Skin.

Synthetic Brushes Are More Ethical and Ideal for Cream and Liquid Bronzers

For those who wish to avoid animal-derived products, you can opt for a synthetic brush made from materials such as nylon and polyester. Unlike natural brushes, there is no cuticle, so they won’t absorb moisture as readily. This makes them suitable for use with cream and liquid bronzers and more hygienic than their natural counterparts.

Synthetic fibres tend to cling together rather than spreading out when pressure is applied, so they're less prone to shedding and somewhat inferior when it comes to blending. That being said, the stiff and flat fibres can be cut to sharp angles, which is ideal for contour and sculpting brushes.

Synthetic brushes are stronger against regular use of alcohol-based cleaners, so if you regularly use and wash your brushes this may be a good option. Some of the latest synthetic brushes are made from materials designed to mimic natural hair, such as taklon, a thermoplastic polyester. These brushes are softer than other synthetics and don't absorb moisture, making them suitable for use with all bronzer types.

Consider the Brush Type: Sculpting Brushes Add Definition, Round Brushes Provide Even Distribution

Consider the Brush Type: Sculpting Brushes Add Definition, Round Brushes Provide Even Distribution

Pick a Round Brush for Even Distribution

Round brushes are the most common type of bronzer brush available to buy. The shape of the head makes them very effective at distributing product such as powder over a large surface area quickly and evenly.

These brushes are best when applying matte or sheer bronzer across the perimeter of the face, in particular the forehead, temples and jawline, which will help you to achieve a soft, sun-kissed glow.

Sculpting Brushes Are Great for Adding Definition to the Face

Sculpting or contour brushes are bronzer brushes that have been cut at an angle for more precise distribution of pigment over the face. These brushes allow you to create defined contours with your chosen products to enhance your natural bone structure.

When using an angled brush with creams and liquids, stipple onto the cheeks from the hairline inwards. By working the product slowly into the skin, you will receive the strongest colour payoff, keeping it confined to a smaller area for maximum definition.

Use a sculpting brush to add definition to your features by sweeping through the hollows of your cheeks, down the sides of the nose and along the brow bone and jawline.

Kabuki Brushes Provide a Natural, Flawless Finish

A kabuki brush is a small, rounded brush with dense bristles. They are inspired by the brushes used by Japanese kabuki theatre actors in the 1600s to apply white rice powder uniformly to the face. Although traditionally used with powdered bronzers, they can also be used with creams and liquids.

Kabuki brushes tend to give the best overall coverage with a more natural result and are the perfect choice for blending. To apply, use rounded motions to achieve a seamless, polished finish.

3

Opt For a Brush With Densely Packed Bristles for Contouring and Sculpting

Opt For a Brush With Densely Packed Bristles for Contouring and Sculpting

In general, bronzer brushes aren’t as densely packed as other types of makeup brushes since they need to distribute product over a larger surface area, but the density is still worth noting. Density refers to the amount of individual bristles packed together, whereby the denser the brush, the more product it can hold

Bronzer brushes with densely packed bristles are better for contouring and sculpting, whereas loosely packed brushes are more suited to blending and sweeping over the skin for a subtle glow. Before buying online, read the product description and reviews to determine which of these uses each brush is suitable for.

If the brush feels dense: stiff to move, tightly packed with bristles, it will deposit a stronger colour onto the skin, so if you are looking for a contouring brush, this is your best bet. If you prefer a natural, blended finish, a fluffier brush with a large surface area will softly sweep the bronzer across the skin without adding harsh lines and definition.

A Synthetic Brush That Mimics Natural Hair

Made using Taklon bristles - a synthetic fibre designed to mimic natural hair - this is our top recommendation for an animal-free alternative, and in general! The soft, fluffy bristles are on par with natural brushes when it comes to picking up powders, but it's also perfect for applying liquids and creams.

The angled brush head follows the lines of the face while being full and rounded enough to distribute product onto the skin evenly. This allows for deep, natural-looking contours, especially when used in the hollows of the cheeks. Gorgeous!

The domed head is comprised of tapered bristles to pick up and redistribute powder, whisking away any excess product on the skin. When applying bronzer, the long, thin handle cleverly forces you to hold the brush in a way that prevents you from applying too much pressure.

War Paint's brush consists of densely-packed, synthetic bristles that effortlessly scoop up powder in one swipe. The ergonomic handle makes it comfortable to grip, and the uniquely angled fishtail design gets right into the contours of the face for an impeccably chiselled finish

While it does an excellent job at picking up the product and moulding itself into the lines of the face, the shape and stiffness of the bristles make blending challenging for beginners. Try using small circular motions to redistribute the product or follow it with a round brush or kabuki.

We love this gorgeous kabuki brush from Charlotte Tilbury! When travelling with your makeup brushes, it’s all too common for them to get dirty or damaged, but this ingenious brush has both a retractable head and protective cap to keep things neat and clean while you’re on the go.

With high-end brands like Charlotte Tilbury, you expect to pay a high price, but this particular brush is very reasonable. The quality of Charlotte Tilbury products is excellent, and this product is a great choice for travelling due to its retractable head; however, the brush itself is not travel-sized.

Super-Soft Natural-Haired Brush for Bronzing Powder

The Guerlain Terracotta Pinceau Brush is an elegant yet unassuming, compact natural brush. The small size takes up minimal space in your makeup bag, and the super-soft bristles are guaranteed to create a uniform bronzing effect without leaving any marks behind.

As is typical with natural hair brushes, this one is, unfortunately, prone to shedding. However, the bold red bristles mean you can easily spot any loose hairs that may fall onto the face before you step out the door.

An Inexpensive Pair of Ergonomic Brushes

At first sight, the price of these kabuki brushes seems too good to be true. Having two brushes can be incredibly handy, especially when they're as thin and lightweight as these. Keep them in your bag, and you'll never be caught short.

Naturally, they're not quite as sturdy as some more expensive brushes, and the bristles themselves are almost too soft. However, they're affordable, incredibly comfortable to hold, and they look great too!
