First and foremost, before you think about the sharpener, you have to think about what kind of pencils you use. Nowadays, it's almost as common for eyeliners and brow pencils to come in a plastic casing rather than a wooden one. This makes the products more difficult to sharpen as the blades will need to be stronger and more robust than your typical sharpener.
Luckily, some companies have now made sharpeners capable of tackling both materials, so you don’t have to throw away your pencil as soon as it becomes blunt or if you accidentally smooth over the end. Of course, it’s safe to say that any sharpener worth its salt will work on wooden pencils too.
If you're not sure, you can always opt for a sharpener from the brand of the eye pencil if they offer one. These have been created to work with the pencil, so you know it will fit perfectly and not cause any damage to your product.

Next up, size. With so many sizes of eye pencils available – from the typical smaller pencils for eyes or brows to chunkier, jumbo options designed to make short work of a smoky or glittery eye – these sizes will require a different size of sharpener.
Thankfully, most sharpeners come with at least two options that accommodate all shapes and sizes of pencil. These days you can even find sharpeners that incorporate adjustable adaptors, which will allow you to fine-tune to an extra 'mid-width' size.
While it's not as common to find eye pencils in this in-between size, some do exist, so these sharpeners will see you covered no matter what size pencil you decide to add to your collection.
Have you ever tried using white eyeliner? Applying it to the waterline makes your eyes appear much bigger!
The final feature worth looking out for is a casing that will catch the pencil shavings. This nifty add on is small but very convenient, as it'll simply do its job of stopping you making a mess when using it, whether that's at home or on the go.
There is a slight downside to having a shaver with a casing, and that is that they will generally be a little bigger and bulkier. If we’re being honest, though, they’re still a really small thing to throw in a makeup bag! However, if you do like to pack super light when you're travelling or out and about, there are options without.
Make sure your eye makeup stays put by opting for a waterproof eyeliner!

Whilst we do wholeheartedly recommend all of the products that appear in this article, from very early on, there was a clear standout number one, and it was this sharpener from Revlon. The reason? – because it has it all.
This offering is capable of sharpening both wood and plastic pencils, plus, it has an adjustable plug that can facilitate any extra sizes you may need it to. It even has an extra-large casing for the messy leftovers. If you're looking for a product that will work well no matter what pencil you buy, then this is the sharpener for you.
This sharpener from Tweezerman is there to get all your pencils in fine shape for when you need them. The versatile item has an adjustable plug, making it suitable for all three sizes of eyeliner, brow, or other makeup pencils available from thin to jumbo.
Furthermore, the sharpener uses double blades to ensure a perfectly rounded tip that will have very little chance of breaking. And when it comes to cleaning time, simply snap off the cover and use the provided stick to get right in there and tidy up.
One of the few multi-material sharpeners on the market, this offering from No7 works with both wooden and plastic pencils. This means that you can focus solely on finding the right product that works for you instead of worrying about whether or not your sharpener will be able to handle it.
Other than that, the sharpener has the classic dual-size plug spaces for average and chunkier pencils, as well as a roomy casing that'll catch any and all shaving rubbish before it needs emptying.
NYX are a cosmetic company that is part of the L'Oreal family, and a fun fact is that they're named after the Greek goddess of night. Founded in the 90s, they started by creating eyeliners and lip pencils, so we think it's fair to assume that if anyone knows a bit about creating sharpeners, it's probably these guys.
Neil Scibelli (a well-known makeup artist) has this as his top everyday option, thanks to the robust and sturdy blades and the reliable closing mechanisms. If it's good enough for him, it's more than good enough for us too!
As you can tell from the company's name, Beauty Without Cruelty has an inspiring ethos. Here, they've created an accessory to complement their full range of vegan and cruelty-free pencils that perform well and are also designed to be more sustainable.
Unlike the other sharpeners, although long-lasting, the blades can be replaced when they've served their time, instead of forcing you to buy a new sharpener and throw the old one away. Additionally, there is also a large capacity case for catching debris, and a cleaning stick included.
This sleek and stylish sharpener not only looks the part but is professional-grade, too, though we'd expect no less from NARS. It has a dual capability, so it's great for most pencils and has a trusty shaving case known for its robustness – even if you're known to throw things in your makeup bag and forget about them.
With strong and robust blades, you are guaranteed to get a fine sharpened tip on your eyeliner or brow pencil. However, it also means you'll need a strong and robust cleaner too, but luckily, that comes as a part of the purchase.
While it may be smaller in size than many other options, this sharpener from Barry M has a brilliant feature that not many others do. You see, with this item, you can adjust the blades, which means you have the choice of going to work with either a sharp or blunt pencil.
Moreover, we like the bright and colourful design of this product instead of the usual dark-coloured black box, plus it's a total bargain. Just be aware that while the compact size could be convenient, it means there is only a small amount of room in the case to catch the shavings.
This universal sharpener is designed to fit three different pencil sizes, from average to jumbo. Plus, not only does it work with eye pencils, but if you like to boost your lipstick look with a lip pencil, it will work perfectly on those too.
The product has a removable shavings case and stainless steel blades that are resistant to dust and rust. On top of this, there is a blade-cleaning tool thrown in to keep your sharpener in good condition.
This option from the natural cosmetics company Lavera is suitable for duo-sized pencils, both average and chunky. It's known to have a good build and won't shred your precious products when you feed them into the blades.
However, there is a minor issue with the closings not being so secure. This means they can fall off from time to time, creating a bit of a disarray, which isn't a huge deal but still something worth remembering.
Our first offering is from renowned make-up artist Charlotte Tilbury. Having worked with some of the biggest names in the business – think Kate Moss and a certain Kardashian – Charlotte knows a thing or two about attaining industry-standard beauty, so you can rest assured that her products are up to scratch.
This sharpener comes with both average and jumbo sizes and a casing to keep all the mess in one place. This hasn't made it further up the ranking because it's a wee bit bigger than some other options, which could make it unsuitable for some people.
If you've ever tried to sharpen a makeup pencil with a regular sharpener you found in the back of a drawer, you'll know the answer to this one. In case you don't, the main difference is the strength of the blade – an HB pencil's lead is much tougher than a soft kohl eyeliner, so the blade on a regular sharpener will be too harsh and could break your eyeliner beyond repair.
The other reason why a regular sharpener won't work well is that drawing pencils tend to be narrower than makeup pencils, so you probably won't be able to jam it in as far as it needs to go. The result? A badly sharpened and potentially ruined favourite eye pencil!
