Those with medium and olive skin tones need to think wisely when choosing a bronzer shade. Picking one that’s too close to your skin tone won’t show, and one that’s too dark will be difficult to blend, appearing too harsh or unnatural.
A good rule of thumb when buying a bronzer is to pick one that's two shades darker than your natural skin tone. When it comes to the colour you should choose, bronzers with golden undertones in copper and earthy tones will be the most complimentary for medium skin.
Bronzer is designed to warm up the complexion versus contour which is a cooler tone to create depth. By choosing a warm-toned bronzer you'll add a soft, healthy glow to the skin. Natural bronzers give the best of both but will look cooler on a warm skin tone, and cooler bronzers (known as contour powders) will add definition, sculpting the face for all skin tones.

Regardless of your actual skin colour and how tanned you are at a certain time of year, your skin tone and undertone are two different things. Working out what your undertone is will help you to choose the shade of bronzer that brings out your best features. You may think that as a medium skin type you automatically have warm tones, but actually, you could be either warm or cool.
To determine yours, check your veins. If they look blue or purple under your skin, you have cool undertones, and if they're more green, you probably have warm undertones. Cool types are associated with having a base tone of blue, pink or red, and will suit silver jewellery best, so would fair well picking bronzers in neutral shades.
Warm types, on the other hand, have a golden or yellow base tone that welcomes gold jewellery and will be complemented best by brown or golden bronzer shades. If you want a more dramatic look, opt for a bronzer with the opposite undertone to balance out the skin. For example, by adding warmth to a cooler skin tone, you'll inject a healthy glow and lift.
Bronzers usually come in the form of a powder, a liquid, or a cream. For medium skin, you will want either a sheer bronzer to enhance naturally tanned skin tones, or one that can carry a lot of pigment to create shadows and depth.
The last decision to make is whether to go for a matte bronzer, or one with shimmer. Shimmer bronzers reflect light and will give medium skin a luminous glow. If you want to go glam, you can search for one that's extra sparkly, but for day-to-day looks you may want to stick to something more subtle.
The downside to shimmer bronzers is that they will highlight blemishes on acne-prone or textured skin. Contour fans usually prefer matte bronzers as they're great for adding depth and definition to your features. Although, they are less forgiving than shimmer shades. Medium skin types can get away with a little more colour, but you should still go easy so you don't end up with harsh streaks.
Try a subtle shimmer by blending in a few drops of liquid or cream to the skin, underneath your foundation. This will give a natural glow, peeking through your make-up that doesn't look too strong or overwhelming.

We just love Benefit’s best-selling Hoola Bronzer in the shade Caramel for medium skin tones! Sweep onto the high points of the face, such as the forehead and chin, and blend towards the centre to achieve a natural sun-kissed look.
The highly-pigmented, fine milled powder makes it easy to blend with the rest of your makeup. Conveniently, this bronzer also comes packaged with a travel brush and mirror, which is ideal for when you need a quick touch-up on the go.
This beautiful shimmer shade from Too Faced has luxurious golden undertones to compliment medium and olive toned skin. Infused with cocoa powder for a delicious chocolatey smell, this bronzer lasts for up to 8 hours, ensuring radiant skin throughout the whole day.
Too Faced's Chocolate Gold Soleil Bronzer can be used on both the face and body, so why not try sweeping a bit across the clavicle to accentuate your décolletage? Doing this will also add a bit of sparkle, drawing more attention to the area.
This liquid bronzer melts into the skin for a flawless finish. Best described as pigment-infused skincare with SPF 15, it's one of the easiest bronzers to blend. Simply dot a couple of drops product sparingly along the natural contour of your cheek bones and blend out towards the hairline.
If you are looking to add a bit of subtle definition, but are unsure where to start when it comes to contouring, give this one a go! You only need to use a tiny amount to get fantastic results, and unlike matte powders, it’s difficult to go overboard with the application.
Refined Golden is the shimmer variation of MAC’s popular "Golden" bronzer shade. With a combination of golden and copper hues, the sheer, frosted powder reflects the light to enhance and accent medium skin tones.
A good choice for topping up a tan, it's lightly pigmented so you can apply this one liberally without it becoming too deep or muddy. Better yet, the powdered formula contains anti-caking ingredients for a smooth, longer lasting application.
Bourjois Sculpt Bronze is a bronzing highlighter enhanced with ultra-fine pearls, which reflect light to illuminate the skin. Although this bronzer only comes in one universal shade, we think it looks best on medium skin tones.
A fantastic product for the summer or to take with you on beach holidays, the highlighting effect enhances a natural tan to make skin appear plump and youthful. Missing the sun in winter? Dab a bit on during party season for some added sparkle!
If you're a master of the no-makeup makeup-look, you'll want this bronzer in your collection! The powder is creamy, which means that not only does it blend like a dream, the pigment is also incredibly easy to build.
Being a soft matte shade with no shimmer or glimmer, it's perfect for contouring the hollows of the cheeks and under the jawline for a snatched, sculpted look. With a natural, radiant bronze colour, it will also add a subtle, luminous healthy glow.
We’ve chosen Nude by Nature’s Natural Glow loose bronzer as our favourite for oily complexions. That's because using a loose powder helps to mattify the skin, cutting down on shine whilst adding dimension and colour to the face.
This mineral powder boasts a skin boosting formulation enriched with Kakadu plum, jojoba esters and absorbent kaolin clay to help nourish and calm acne-prone skin. Best of all, it won’t clog pores either!
NARS' bronzing powder has a light golden shimmer that perfectly catches the light, without appearing glittery or shiny. We chose the shade Laguna for adding subtle warmth to medium-toned skin. A versatile contour shade, this one looks best when applied with broad strokes.
Brush onto the high points of the face and along the jaw line to beautifully define your bone structure. You could even follow the advice of NARS UK’s lead stylist and use it to blend the edges of a dark eyeshadow through the socket for a seamless finish.
Bobbi Brown’s bronzing powder in medium is the perfect daily contour shade for complimenting cool complexions. Use with an angled brush to define the nose and cheeks, or with a round, fluffy bronzer brush for an all-over glow.
The blend of brown and red tones are perfectly balanced to mimic a natural tan, delivered with a soft matte finish. Just note that while this shade is suitable for most medium skin tones, it may leave some with warmer undertones looking a bit flushed.
Part of Clinique's "Chubby Stick" range, this bronzer comes in a convenient form for when you're in a rush. This bronzer is designed to let you contour within minutes - just apply directly where you need it and blend out for your desired effect.
A practically foolproof application, you can literally draw on pigment with this feature-defining crayon to create the illusion of depth. Oil-free and long-lasting, the only downside is that it may be a bit too pale for some darker or olive complexions.
