Those who do want them for use outside of the home should be aware that even though they will fold up much smaller than your usual beach towel, they may be too chunky for those travelling light. If you’re packing up the car for a day out or have a generous luggage allowance, you may not mind though!
Furthermore, microfibre’s antibacterial properties make it a match for households with babies or children who want to keep germs to a minimum, and these medium sizes are just right for bundling up little ones.
Gym goers will also appreciate their ability to resist bacteria if they’re to be used for brow-mopping or draping over equipment, plus you also won’t have to cart around a heavy, sopping wet towel all day if you favour an early pre-work swim.
Their germ fighting skills will appeal to acne-prone skin too, as well as being a suitable option for those who like a separate facial drying towel in order to limit bacteria transfer between body and face.
Facecloth squares usually come in at 30 x 30cm, but there are also sizes available of around 80 x 40cm, similar to that of a hand towel if you prefer. Hikers, cyclists, or anyone in need of a small, portable sweat towel may also prefer one of these pocket-sized varieties.
Much like its effect on the skin, microfibre does not suck up every last ounce of moisture from the hair (that curlies are unfortunately short of anyway), and also reduces breakage, friction and frizz.
The design of these wraps, coupled with their button closure, ensures they stay firmly put once on, so they’re an infinitely less frustrating hair towel option whatever your hair type may be.
Bear in mind that the grams listed on the product description will not include any extra moisture weight, but this will be minimal and exponentially less so than towels of other materials.
A safe bet for an effective but lightweight medium-sized microfibre towel will be in the 200g region, with larger styles erring toward the 400-500g range. Which is about the average weight of a paperback book in case you’d like something to compare it to!
Ideally, the case will have a panel of mesh to allow the towel to breathe and continue to dry, even if it has to be hurriedly packed away whilst still damp. This will help keep mould, bacteria, and general pongs at bay — a travellers dream!
Whether you want to hang up your towel to dry in a tree whilst camping or to keep it from blowing away after staking your claim on the hotel sun bed, trust us on this one! Microfibre towels without this feature may be more suited to home use, such as bath sheet substitutes or hair wraps.
Whilst we would recommend following each brand’s specific washing instructions, on the whole microfibre should not be washed at temperatures above 30º and only tumble tried on a very low heat, if at all, as too high a heat could melt the fibres and damage your towel.
Fabric conditioner should also be avoided, as should bleach, to preserve the absorbency and colour vibrancy. Finally, microfibre towels are better off washed separately to your other clothes as they have a habit of picking up lint and fluff.
Travelling near or far requires you to be prepared, whether you have a whole car boot to fill or you're supposed to be travelling light. Make this simpler for yourself by buying gadgets and tools that are going to make getting from A to B that bit easier. Our guides for some more of these travel necessities will help to point you in the right direction.
