The number of plies a toilet roll has simply refers to the number of layers of paper used in each piece. 1-ply has just a single layer, 2-ply has a double layer and so on. Whether you're happy with what you've used recently - or not - it is worth checking to see how many plies you usually go for.
If you’re on a budget, 1 or 2-ply should be fine, with 2 giving a little more security as you wipe. If you're really feeling fancy, 3 or 4-ply is extra luxurious and thick and, while it's likely to cost a pound or two when buying in bulk, you will use less so it's often the more economical choice. However, it does have a higher carbon footprint as more energy is used in its production.
Many toilet papers available are textured to give a little extra depth and thickness. Quilted paper has a criss-cross stitched pattern which provides body to each sheet, so you feel extra secure and comfortable with every use. Some decorative patterns are also embossed to add a little texture at the same time, which in turn boosts the volume of the paper and lets you wipe with confidence.
Another option is to choose a loo roll containing an additional balm such as shea butter or aloe vera, which may help soothe dry or irritated skin, and should generally feel softer to the touch. These types of products may cost a little more and won’t suit all skin types.
Bamboo is lauded as the new eco-crop, and it’s true that it’s extremely fast-growing and sustainable – just check that no unnecessary chemicals have been used in its production. Another good bet if the environment is your concern is to look out for toilet tissue made from recycled paper which generally has the least environmental impact.

These bamboo toilet rolls from Who Gives a Crap have been voted the number one top sustainable toilet paper by The Natural Resources Defense Council. On top of that, 50% of the profits from every box sold are donated to ethical charities that help build toilets in developing countries.
Being environmentally friendly doesn't mean that these rolls are any less comfortable on your bottom and at 370 sheets per roll, you won't be running out of paper at inopportune moments! If you haven't tried bamboo paper before, we think you'll be pleasantly surprised with the results.
Tanki toilet roll is made to comply with the most stringent environmental laws that apply to ships at sea meaning that they are made without any plastic or glue, as well as being completely free from harmful chemicals.
Tanki's best feature is that the paper completely dissolves in water meaning that you're drastically reducing the risk of blockages. This makes it a fantastic choice for homes with sensitive sanitation units as well as caravans, boats, or while camping.
For a pack of 40 rolls, this is fantastic value for money. On top of the great price, these toilet rolls have a springy 3-ply and are soft and good quality so they won't let you down.
For such a large pack you may prefer to buy a product from a more popular brand, but this is great if you're on a low budget and you aren't afraid to take the plunge.
Four thick layers make this paper extra dense and sturdy, and the quilted texture is both pleasing to the eye and gentle on the bottom! Another perk of this Kleenex four-ply toilet roll pack is that it's made from 100% pure fibres, giving it a soft feel.
As it is not recycled, it is not as good for the environment as other toilet papers in this ranking, but it is sourced sustainably and FSC certified which is a step in the right direction. No added extras, just luxuriously soft paper.
